      @@johnbrown6734 any sandpaper will do. In my case it was a sandpaper with an adhesive backing glued to a flat board. I think it was 180 grit

    I love when people take 20 steps to try and do something that is kind of pointless (like cutting a bottle! lol) because you learn so much in the process. I've made a few pieces of furniture - when I could have just bought from Ikea - and each one has things I messed up because i didn't know better but I've learned so much about how to join pieces of wood in a sturdy manner and how to customize fit furniture exactly for my specific needs.

    Hows about letting to heat up for longer than 5 seconds...

  • @tuseroni6085

    few things: if you don't have a glass cutter a file will work, you can use a triangular file or just the corner of a flat file. if you don't care about the top of the glass and don't wanna do the hot/cold thing a hammer will work. the line creates a line where cracks will not propagate, shattering the top will work to get you a bottom. you could also hold the glass at the bottom (with gloves) and shatter the top over the edge of a table (like in the movies when someone breaks a beer bottle to use as a knife, but in reverse)

    Yeah you definitely want that bottle to get rocking hot so that there's a shock in temperature difference. It may seem like you have it on fire or heating up for a long period of time but really you a heap that glass until you almost don't want to touch it in that area. But the problem is when you overheat it can cost the glass to shatter entirely ofcourse. Awesome video man thank you.

    Great video. I like the fact that you showed your first attempt which was a failure. That is what happens when you take on new projects. But the best part was your ingenuity and success on the second attempt! Great job. I will do the same.

    Compared to other video tutorials, maybe you didn't let the string burn long enough?
    Theoretically, you should do only one complete score line with a glass cutter. No back and forth. It's supposed to give a cleaner cut.
    Congratulations on your success! : )

      using really wold water will help as well. lots of ice cubes to create a bigger temperature variation.

    • @Xizax41325
      @Xizax41325 6 років тому +1

      Yeah, mix ice with a little bit of water just enough to let the cubes float, and then at a ton of salt to it as if you were making ice cream. Then let the string burn on there for a few minutes rotating it as you go. The string method produced a not so clean cut most of the time though so you want to go above where you need. That's how I've done it in the past.

    Guys just a tip from a guy who makes glasses like this from recycled bottles, if you have access to a wet saw with a straightedge. Use it instead. It is easier to keep the lines straight and is easy to smooth out with wet sand paper. The score line method only works with round bottles that are a consistent thickness. Square or "unique" shaped bottles separate unevenly. The wetsaw and straightedge method works no mattter what. Ive made full glasses, shot and double shot glasses, and whiskey glasses using it and it never fails

    This inspire me to try this. Now I need to go hunt for a glass cutter. I'd probably dip the glass in an ice bucket of water and let it sit for a few mins then dunk it in a boiling pot of water and simmer. Alternating between those two. For the 1st technique, I think you probably need to burn longer before putting in cold water and leave it there for longer

  • @curtis_75706
    @curtis_75706 Місяць тому

    You have to let the string burn long enough to get the glass hot. The glass being hot then plunged into cold water is what causes the extreme temperature fluctuation which causes the glass to break. Letting the string burn for literally 4.5 seconds does nothing.
