    I have the Gen 1 jacket and pants and agree with you on the lining. Also love the Woodland pattern. I have newer generations in different patterns as well. To me in warmer weather that lack of lining causes me to sweat as bad or worse than regular rain gear. Even though in theory the sweat vapor will be evaporated through the Goretex there is much more vapor to get rid of. Rainy day here so this an appropriate video. Thanks guys! One of these days I’m going to make a trip to that river there and experience it for myself. Just a long hike from here in southwest Alabama, LOL! Take care and see you in the next video.

    In 1995, we just called them the Gortex parka and the Gortex trousers. They were $249.99 at the PX. Each. They were NOT issued to most Marines and they were highly prized both by those that owned them and those that did not. To own a pair at that time was essentially half a month’s pay for a non-rate.

    The liner helped warm you too, it actually absorbs some body heat. They brought the liner back on the ACU version, and if i recall it was in the multicam too, but i can not confirm as i had to turn in all my multicam stuff except the combat shirts as I didnt deploy with that gear. Theres a bunch of the multicam I would have liked to keep like the cold weather boots and 3 day pack, they were both good gear and much better than the ACU versions that were the original of both.

    • @robertsbushcraft

      I've always liked the liner for it being a layer between the skin and jacket and for it helping to insulate. What cold weather boots were you issued? We use the USMC RAT temperate weather boots as well as the Belleville MCB 950 GoreTex mountain combat boots.

    • @warlike3934
      @warlike3934 8 місяців тому

      I really can't recall, I had that stuff issued for like a month and then they cut the number of my MOS 91E for that deployment they issued it to me for so I immediately turned it in. I just looked up mountain issue boots and think it was Wellco M760 from what I recall them looking like. The Bates 990 look alot the other set. Also to make your jacket more packable just fold in sleeves, fold that in from left and right to centre, roll it up and stuff in hood, comes out a bit smaller than a football and quick deploys by grabbing front of hood and giving it a drop thrust.

    The Gen 1 was just an overall better construction and quality over the Gen2. Gen 2 was made to be more affordable not an improvement over Gen 1. I have an original issue Gen 1 that’s almost 30 years old and it’s almost like new. I add different fill Northface puff jackets underneath for varying cold temperatures.

    Great video I think it's the best Gen 1 parka review because you showed it being used and combined it with outdoor activities. I wish I had seen this video before buying the Gen 2 parka, I agree with the description of the Gen 2 parka sleeves being irritating to your forearms. To me I felt like my forearms were itching, and it feels a little smaller then the Gen 1 parka which feels like wearing a windbreaker in comparison. Please test out the M65 field jacket you would do a good and detailed review.?

    As I'm watching this it's -15F. I had some Swedish extreme cold military gear many years ago but gave it to Goodwill because I never used it. It was for arctic use and at the 46th parallel I didn't need that much. It was canvas externally with pile lining and quilted liners for the top and the pants. Too much. It looks like the gear you guys are wearing would do for around here in winter with headgear and pac style boots. Goretex always feels cold to the skin. I've never owned ECWCS gear but the Gen II looks good. Thanks for posting.

    I think the Gen II and Gen III use what Gore refers to on the consumer market as Gore Tex "Paclite". It is lighter weight and more packable, but it does not breath as well and it less durable than what Gore refers to as 3-Layer Gore Tex. Consumer jackets with the material like your Gen-I are far more expensive then the Paclite jackets. That Gen-I would likely run $500-$600 if brought to production today. That thing is a legit ski parka shell. I like it and would love to find one someday.

    • @robertsbushcraft
      @robertsbushcraft  Рік тому

      You're on to something concerning packability. The Beyond Clothing L4-L6 parka and pants can just about be stuffed down into a boot sock. The Gen 1 is nowhere near it. I think there is plenty of use left for these Gen 1's.

    😅I love my Gen 1. More serviceable, I agree with all the parts you showed liner and the hood. The side pocket is for those cute little green waterproof notepads and pen. Warning like other Gortex products it looses its waterproofing. I found this out in a snowstorm during winter survival training. I now use it for hunting but the guys say its too noisy (picky, picky). I also like the USAF ABU but the interior green fleece is worthless. I wear the fleece from the GEN 1. The black/grey tiger stripe camo on the ABU you can hide out on any driveway in America

    Thanks for explaining the difference had no idea that generation one had the lining like that. Do wish my Jen three had something like that, but only own pants. Likely more useful on the top. The extreme cold weather hood that you showed. Looks like the Shoremans hood that I have. There are a couple of variations. I lucked out buying a medium that fit just perfectly for someone that wears size 7 1/4 inch hat. Ordered a second one to try small and it’s larger than the medium. The best part about the first hood purchased has real fur in a color that looks like it could’ve come off of a raccoon with a bit of grays and brownish tint. The second one ordered came with bright white synthetic fur that was falling out like it needed Propecia. Could definitely tell the small which came bigger than the medium size was made to fit over a helmet. Pretty much every hooded garment in the military made larger for helmet use. Cheers BTW: kudos on the fantastic fire Gabriel!🎉

    Big Hello from Greensboro! How does Dad feel about the old m65 jacket!? I agree with Dad about the first Gen, been using mine since early 2001.

      NC is the place to be, isn't it Ed! Dad says that the M65 is bombproof and is fantastic for beating around the woods in, protects you from briars in cutovers, and is a great addition to your preps. 100% on that one!

      Moved down from Long Island in 85 and was relieved to find that at least back in the 80's it was like my neighborhood used to be like. Heck, Uhwarrie reminded me of my Catskills stomping grounds, perfect! And of course 2A very friendly!

    I just purchased a Gen 1 in 3 color desert. I can't wait to get it. I was issued the Gen 1 Woodland back in the day and it was one of my favorite jackets. I didn't even know they made it in the 3 color desert until I stumbled upon a listing in eBay.

    Just got my Gen-1. It is used (in unissued condition). What do you think would be warmer (with no other layering) The Gen-1 ECWCS Parka or an M65 field Jacket with the add in liner?

    • @robertsbushcraft
      @robertsbushcraft  Рік тому

      Tough one, there! Overall in all weather conditions? The Gen 1 with the M65 liner would be my choice between the two. The Gen 1 offers rain and wind protection where the M65 field jacket does not. So, for me, I'd take the Gen 1.

      @@robertsbushcraft Hi Roberts Bushcraft, I watch your video's frequently and I learn a lot. Well I just ordered the level 3 fleece liner jacket (new with tags). The Gore-Tex is definitely not Thinsulate or Polar Tec. It should not be marketed as ECWCS (Extreme Cold Weather Clothing System) There is nothing Extreme cold about it. Gore-Tex is just the best material for a raincoat. I was hoping the Parka was for like Antarctica, I was a little disappointed. The level 3 liner jacket is Polar Tec. Hopefully that is warmer than the M65 and the field jacket liner. I did learn about one additional compartment that was not in your video about the Gen1 Parka. FYI Inside the left sleeve pocket on the Gen-1 is what appears to be a Bic lighter pocket. Keep up the great videos.

      @@arlenewolf5260 the ECWCS (Extended Cold Weather Clothing System) is meant to be worn in layers (base, middle, outer). You're 100% correct, the Gore-Tex jacket is pretty much just a windproof and waterproof outer shell. In this case, the Gen 1 has a thin liner in it, which I prefer over the newer generations. In this video, you can see that I am wearing the Polartec 300 fleece layer (coyote brown) beneath the Gore-Tex and I do prefer that layering over the M-65 field jacket. Two options come to mind for an Antartica-type expedition: ECWCS Happy Suit with Gore-Tex outer shell, or perhaps the Extreme Cold Weather Parka N-3B.

      @@robertsbushcraft I am familiar with Thinsulate from wearing quality cold weather jackets at the PD. I am retired now. I am surprised the M65 liners do not appear to be equal to Thinsulate (they might be somewhat close, but I do not think it is equal). Do you think the M65 liner or the Polartec 300 is better? Also I am surprised, the M65 has provisions for attaching a liner and the ECWCS parka does not. Although I do not live in Antarctica, I am interested in the best (warmest) surplus parka I can get. I am deciding weather to have a tailor set up the parka with attachment points for an M65 liner (or two), or possibly the Polartec 300. Please keep this dialog going with me. Hopefully I can set up my ECWCS parka to be somewhat amazing. Thank you.

    • @robertsbushcraft
      @robertsbushcraft  Рік тому +1

      I prefer the Polartec 300 fleece over the M65 liner. I think that weight is just a bit warmer than the M65 liner and you can wear the Polartec as a stand alone jacket in public. Adding some buttons to that parka is easy and you can even add them on the cuff of the sleeves. Just sew the buttons on the wrist strap so you don't puncture the Gore-Tex. My oldest son is a deputy with our county Sheriff's office and I am very proud of him. Thank you for your years of service!
