The Jacksonville Jaguars boasted one of the most fun underdog narratives to follow in the 2017 season, with the league's most dominant defense and a solid enough offense to carry themselves all the way to the doorstep of the Super Bowl in the AFC Championship. They lost a heartbreaker but looked to have a promising chance to return in the years to come, but now that we stand 2 seasons in the future nearly that entire roster has disbanded and moved on to greener pastures. This video looks to outline the collapse of that 2017 Jacksonville Jaguars team and the factors that played into it, including changes beyond their control, and changes that burned the team down from the inside.

Mercedes Lewis was a long term leader on offense and you release him. You don’t focus on fixing the office and staff either. Caldwell and Marrone should be gone. Todd wash should be gone. Y’all waited too long to get rid of Nathaniel Hackett. The culture is just not about winning and ion this 2020 season will be a clear rebuild and it’s just frustrating

Jaguars actually started off 2018 good going 3-1 and beating thr Patriots. It really didn't start to go downhill until over half their Oline got injured and their top 3 TE got injured in addition with fournette getting injured

The Jags need to return back to their core identity as a team with a solid defense and a strong running game. Historically, the Jags have always nailed it with running backs (Fred Taylor, MJD) and top defenders (Marcus Stroud, John Henderson, Mike Peterson, Calais Campbell, Jalen Ramsey, etc).

They’re ok. The half and half helmet from a few years back was horrendous.
They had to get rid of the two color helmets as they discovered that the half gold, half black helmets were actually giving the opposing teams easier head movement positions reads of their players, than with one single color helmet.

The UT reason: The Jaguars victory over the Steelers in the playoffs came with a heavy cost. They contracted their cancer. Jacksonville became arrogant and drama seeped into the organization that created an implosion.
My reason: The 2017 Jaguars were never that good to begin with. They were a fluke team that beat the very low expectations placed on them, snuck out of nowhere on teams that didn’t expect them. They were playing a fourth place schedule. Combined with the Houston Texans getting ravaged by injury, and the Colts losing Andrew Luck, it opened up the wide-open AFC South even wider. They played a weak Bills team, and an overrated Steelers team plagued by locker room drama and team cancer in the playoffs. Everything lined up perfectly for them that one year.

EdmacZ If that was the case, they would’ve been annihilated by the Pats in the AFC Championship Game, but they were actually pretty competitive that game. To me, I attribute this to a myriad of things. The Jags released one of their veterans, Marcedes Lewis, which they shouldn’t have done in hindsight. One of their other veterans retired, Paul Posluszny. The Jags then drafted Taven Bryan who hasn’t really generated any attention compared to the fact that they could’ve signed Lamar Jackson. They were still good, but this team was lacking depth at a few positions and were facing a more difficult schedule in 2018. The Jags actually beat the Pats in Week 2 by a score of 31-20, but then it would be their demise. Their left tackle tore his ACL in that game, and there eventually came many injuries on the o-line. Leonard Fournette was also injured in 2018 which attributed to the offense’s regression and the defense’s regression since they had to be on the field more. Bortles was not protected and a lot of the blame was on him. Tom Coughlin started to micro-manage the team in trying to solve the problems with the Jags, which rubbed people the wrong way.
In the end, I don’t think the Jags should’ve released Blake Bortles and pursued Nick Foles. Even if he did suck in 2019, he would’ve been benched for Gardner Minshew. Coughlin’s ego also demoralized this team. He was responsible for Ramsey and Dante Fowler leaving the Jags.

The loss of Fournette was just the tip of the iceberg on offense in 2018. The Jags also lost their 3rd-down back, Cory Grant, who was huge in the playoffs. Also all 5 starting offensive linemen, the starting TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins, and leader of the WR room Marqise Lee were on IR before the middle of the season.
But before they lost everybody, remember they were 3-1 with a win over the Pats.

This is great, really comprehensive of the past 3 years. If you look at Jaguars history, since divisional realignment, they tend to struggle heavily against the NFC West teams. In 2017, despite all the success, they went 1-3 vs the division with the win at home over the Seahawks being the high point of the regular season. In Week 1 of 2018 they beat the Giants on the road, then the Patriots in Jacksonville to start the season 2-0. Afterwards, Bortles basically imploded without a running game, as you said. But since that point, the Jags haven't won a game vs the NFC (0-7). In 2020 they're matched up against a formidible NFC North, so I agree I don't think things are going to change for them.

I have been a Jags fan for about my whole life I went through the pain of Blaine Gabbert, Blake Bortles and every quarterback in between. When we made the run to the AFC championship game I felt that we would be a powerhouse for years and years to come. Even though it didn’t pan out that way I will never forget how that team impacted our franchise and that city. DUVAAAALLL!!!
