yes, whats in the video is like the bastard child of danish smörrebröd and swedish smörgåstårta. And what people put on/in it is VERY(VERY VERY!) different depening on what they grew up with/recepies
Yes, I’m Finnish but we also do smörgåstårta (we call it voileipäkakku) And yeah definitely not a sandwich. It’s a celebration cake but savoury. You’d have it at christenings, graduation ceremonies or when people come to visit for some occasion. You’d never just eat it casually like a sandwich or hotdog or something :) It is strange though haha good but strange
What I love about Beryl, is there’s rarely ever any food waste - she eats everything she makes (and sometimes It’s obvious that she doesn’t love some of them) so it really puts her in a good light that she finishes them off or let’s you know she’ll finish it later.
I am so happy that you are starting this journey. I was devastated when I thought we might loose your presence on UA-cam. As for ideas, chicken dishes or desserts would be fun.
I'm german. I've never seen anyone put a cherry on their toast Hawaii. But it's the 'mommy doesn't wanna cook today' go to dish kids just adore. I still have it sometimes and you can get it in some bakeries and restaurants. Some common spins: you can make it with other types of fruit, like peach. Also some ppl add that concentrated tomato stuff from a tube under the ham. Some ppl dip it in ketchup, too.
Love the fact someone in your age group does this. I'm 65 yr old grandma and I love cooking foods from different cultures . So how about some soups?? Or stews!
I love your cooking mentality. I started cooking typical American dishes, then southern American, then Mexican, then Japanese, then traditional Sichuan Chinese, then Cantonese, then Indian. I can't afford to travel but I've been blessed to live in diverse cities in the US with access to great international markets. Cooking is the next best thing to going. :)
How about rice dish. Almost every country has one. And everybody makes it different. Also if you need insight from Mexico DM me and I’ll be glad to help.
The pineapple sandwich is probably one of those food that KIDS LOVE and adults love partially because of the nosagia, like Hawaiian pizza here in Canada. It's also an easy treat a parent can make for a kid quickly.
Toast Hawaii IS 50s to 70s party food from Western Germany. And the cherry is more for decoration, you can leave that out. You even chose good cheese, the original is with American cheese. A sprinkle of basic curry powder on top is nice, too. And I apologize for that music video on behalf of all Germans. :D
I grew up in Germany eating Hawaii toast, I was always convinced this was an American dish that somehow made it to Germany haha (I have also never seen a cherry on top) =D
"He just smiled and gave me a Vegemite sandwich." The secret is to use only a scraping of Vegemite, and to use real butter. 21st century version is Avocado and Vegemite. Congratulations! A real Aussie sango.
Beryl Shereshewsky has alot of attractions on this brand new channel by the fans from Great Big Story. But why though? There simple reasons. 1. Her creativity and curiosity is beyond. 2. How she talk to her fans is sweet, friendly, and heart welming. 3. Her editing skill is already good. Thats my opinion and Beryl if you reading this, thank you and keep up the good work!
Curries from around the world please, so different in each country. (special mention to the original Chicken Tikka Masala from Glasgow, an inauthentic dish created for a bland Western palate that then spread back around the world from Scotland)
@@Nicolacurran1 Yeah. The Europeans just could not be bothered to learn all the real names of the dishes and jut called almost anything just "curry" ;)
Ahh love that you found Alexander Marcus! My German brother-in-law's family has this heartwarming tradition of eating Toast Hawai with the whole family on Christmas Day. My sister doesn't like Toast Hawai so much, so I admire her enthusiasm to do this for more than 10 years now. (Toast Hawai rather makes me run away. Fast.)
Shokupan is fairly easy to make for bread makers, and truly the only thing I think a home baker can make that's close to Wonder/Sunbeam-type store bought bread.
Yaaay! I was just saying to my husband, "I hope Beryl starts her own channel". And then BOOM saw this! UA-cam wouldn't be the same without you! :) Puddings could make a cool episode. Oooor maybe wedding cakes from around the world!
its not really a smörgåstårta. a real one tends to have salmond and shrimp as toppings and a filling of eggs and tuna. or the meat version with ham and fruit. both are often made using white bread.
@@np02058 Those toppings she used are totally what could be used in a smögårdstårta, because you can basically use whatever you want! I've seen so many different variations and this was definitely within the common varitaions. I've never seen it made with ryebread though, so that is a mistake if any.
I never understood adding the cherry to the "Toast Hawaii"! For me the sandwich is very reminiscent of my childhood, because I could whip it up myself, but I do think it has lost its popularity in Germany over the years!
You know what? I think I am going to make it later today for myself, just because I haven't had that in aaaages. But I am probably also going to make what my mom made for me when I was a kid and didn't like warm pineapple: canned tuna and tomato slices, same preparation 😁
Showing what foods cities and countries from all over are famous for is always interesting. For example Sudbury Ontario is famous for porchetta sandwiches.
Greetings from Trinidad. u did a great job on representing our most famous food item. For a real kicker the habanero peppers are normally blended with lots of garlic and shadow benny (local version of culantro) as the accompanying sauce for doubles. Keep up the good work.
What about an episode on Sauerkraut, which is used in Germany, France, Poland and Russia? I think it would be interesting to see the difference in preparation and use. And I love your videos!
I'm from Finland and the smörgåstårta (or voileipäkakku as it's called in Finnish) is also a family event staple here. At least my grandmother used to make it with ham or smoked salmon filling, cucumber, radish and fresh dill served on top. And it's always made with white bread. It's definitely a... concept 😂 but I have to admit, it's good.
Some of the themes that pops into my mind : 1) steamed foods 2) fried foods 3) comfort foods 4) region wise foods (eg., African, Indian, Indian sub-continent, East Asian or even country wise)
We were stationed in Germany and there is a little restaurant in Wittlich near Spangdahlem AB, called Gasthaus Zur Breit (or as us Americans call it, the truck stop). They make a dish called schnitzel Hawaii (the sandwich you did made me think of it), and it's hands down the best food I've ever put in my mouth.
I just love you Beryl! Your light just spreads to everyone watching and the video just speeds through. I don't normally watch many videos start to finish but always yours!!
Condiments. In the PH, we have banana catsup (or banana sauce as marketed in the US), and you may be surprised by its story and how a Filipina food scientist invented that 😁
my parents are from Trinidad and Tobago! Nice to see someone know about it. Also when we say doubles, it typically means two of the barra to make it into a sandwich. The way you ate it would be called singles because there is one barra not two. But then again that's just where my grandparents live
The smörgårtårta is almost always served at funerals.... but i would not call this a sandwich. There are so many sandwiches from sweden, shrimp sandwich is the most popular sandwich here. It has eggs, mayo, shrimps, lemon, dill, and sometimes other things too. Its really good
@@user-sm4qu3zy2r jag skrev detta för att varför har hon ens med den i denna videon när det finns så många andra mackor från sverige som faktiskt är mackor, och inte tårtor????

Thought the same but then I thought: we germans often use those disgusting separately packed Toast Cheese slices for Hawaii Toast so it must be better. Emmentaler is definitely better
Beryl Shereshewsky bahahaha I mean you did it beautifully here!! For more complex breads like a sourdough you’re going to need a sourdough starter which is kind of a lengthy process I’m just churning out ideas right now so here is my comprehensive list of foods beryl should make: - Cakes - Soups - Salads - Curries? - Pizzas/Flatbreads like Naan - Fish - Potatoes - (breakfast)sandwiches - Chicken Dishes - Cheeses - Drinks like tea in England or Kombucha in Japan We’re making progress haha
I’m Swedish and we eat smörgåstårta for every birthday. We always make my grandmas recipe with white bread, ham filling and tuna filling and then topped with veggies, grapes and rolled up ham and cheese
I like the concept of simple and universal. Every ethnicity does their own version of for example Pudding. Whether it be sweet or savory. Tea. What is mixed into it and how is it served. I think you get the point. Anyway great job and I look forward to more. Congratulations 👏 👏
These are great stories. I love it! "Not everything is better with a cherry on top." Never knew the stuff about Portuguese-Japanese language. You're fabulous, dude. Tell Jerry hello for me.

Ideas for your next video: - potato dishes (from Germany: Bratkartoffeln mit Spiegelei are some sort of very crispy fried potatoes or Reibekuchen mit Apfelmus which are potato fritters with sweet apples, both very comforting and delicious) - special: potato salads from around the world - eggs for dinner (from Germany: Eier mit Frankfurter Grüner Soße - personally I hate it but it was named cultural world heritage by UNESCO - or Schwalbennest, a meatball with an egg inside) - cultural world heritage dishes - legumes (from Germany: white bean stew or green pea stew) - onions (from Germany: Zwiebelkuchen which is a savory onion pie, you will love this!! also very popular in Switzerland and Alsace) - dumplings (from Germany: Schwäbische Maultaschen) - pastry (from Germany: Quarktaschen or Quarkstrudel with „quark“ and rasins, Puddingbrezel, Franzbrötchen with cinnamon, Apfelstrudel, Berliner with marmalade, Nussecken with nuts and chocolate...) - cabbage (from Germany: Rotkohl with potato dumplings and pork roast or Kohlrouladen which is meat rolled and baked in cabbage - pancakes from around the world - rolled foods (from Germany: Rinderrouladen rolled beef slices with mustard and pickles as filling) - sweet meals (from Germany: Milchreis with cinnamon and sugar - a sweet rice dish)
How about Grünkohl? I've heard it's eaten as some kind of superfood outside of Germany, like we eat cranberries or anything that doesn't grow here(:/). Got a chuckle out of hearing that.

5:49 Note that the rye should be fine grain rye. Whole grain bread is another type of sandwhich. This rye bread is typically blended with wheat bread in several layers (say 75-80% wheat). Combined with a mix of whipped cream and majonäs (mayonnaise) with pepparrot (horseradish), it becomes an excellent base for lox/salmon, shrimps, and large rolled slices of (pretty strong) cheese. Plus lots of *thin* slices of cucumber, lettuce and herbs. Some black or red rum/caviar is also common, especially as part of the creamy decoration on top of the cake. That's pretty typical Swedish smörgåstårta since the 1950s. There are other variants, including liver paté (that americans hate), olives, and such, but again, this is probably the most typical style.
In germany i would rather prefer the "armer Ritter" or "Strammer Max". The "armer Ritter" is like a french toast and a sweet type. the Toast is plac3d in whisked eggs and after in a mixture of sugar and a bit cinnamon. you cann fill it with a mild cheese and then fry it in the pan. The "Strammer Max" is one of my favourite. It is a good german bread, like a stronger one with a darker crust. You fry it in the pan and add cheese, ham, fried eggs and tomatoes. Use a little bit of salt and pepper and eat it with a bit ketchup on top. This is more an german sandwich, than the toast hawaii

yes, whats in the video is like the bastard child of danish smörrebröd and swedish smörgåstårta.
You’d never just eat it casually like a sandwich or hotdog or something :)
It is strange though haha good but strange
No need to kvetch. it's exactly what she said it is in the video.
What I love about Beryl, is there’s rarely ever any food waste - she eats everything she makes (and sometimes It’s obvious that she doesn’t love some of them) so it really puts her in a good light that she finishes them off or let’s you know she’ll finish it later.
She must have really liked that strawberry sandwich. She didn't offer much to hubby
I am so happy that you are starting this journey. I was devastated when I thought we might loose your presence on UA-cam. As for ideas, chicken dishes or desserts would be fun.
Fried chicken around the world would be fun! Another happy Beryl fan excited to see her new channel on UA-cam!
Or stews!
Hi from Trinidad, you did a great job....thanks for representing Trinidad and Tobago 🇹🇹
Your country has lot of food similar to Indian cuisine
Yes because we have a large population of Indians who live here
@@renukaharrilal2786 ohh even your name sound indian to me ..
Yes lol I'm Indian
I ate these in T&T when I was 18 but didn't know what it was so it was awesome to find out the name.
Comfort food around the world??
I love this idea
@@BerylShereshewsky please do fried desserts around the world . Show them gulab jamun 😅
How about rice dish. Almost every country has one. And everybody makes it different. Also if you need insight from Mexico DM me and I’ll be glad to help.
Make chole samosa. Like samosas are kind of smashed and topped with chole. It just warms your heart
@@marianarodas Thank you! - I came here to say this, glad somebody came up with it. :)
I love seeing someone so excited about their own cooking.
The pineapple sandwich is probably one of those food that KIDS LOVE and adults love partially because of the nosagia, like Hawaiian pizza here in Canada. It's also an easy treat a parent can make for a kid quickly.
Funny considering we call the ham on pizza Canadian Bacon
I knew she would do Vada Pav, I'm not Indian but Beryl Fans out there will Understand
Leyte Parole and Probation Office if you follow her on Instagram she photographs the entire process of her videos and she said she ate 3 vada pav 😂😂
Because her husband is Indian, mainly.
ACAB
Toast Hawaii IS 50s to 70s party food from Western Germany. And the cherry is more for decoration, you can leave that out. You even chose good cheese, the original is with American cheese. A sprinkle of basic curry powder on top is nice, too.
And I apologize for that music video on behalf of all Germans. :D
vada pav is considered an index of economy. You know economy is changing when the prices of vada pav go up.
The same applies to the doubles here in Trinidad
and samosas
Same as the Big Mac index!
I grew up in Germany eating Hawaii toast, I was always convinced this was an American dish that somehow made it to Germany haha (I have also never seen a cherry on top) =D
As a Trinidadian, doubles is not categorically a sandwich but it’s fine, it’s just nice to be included 😅
"He just smiled and gave me a Vegemite sandwich." The secret is to use only a scraping of Vegemite, and to use real butter.
21st century version is Avocado and Vegemite. Congratulations! A real Aussie sango.
Naaaaa mate use the real thing Marmite none of that Aussie nonsense :-)
Seeing your smile always makes me happy!
You're doing really well, Beryl!
I love how you wrote that in her video style
I am an Indian and let me tell you I've had enough vada paos to tell you that yours looks delicious. You go girl! ❤️
For the Hawaii Toast we use mostly "Scheiblettenkäse" aka plastic american cheese 😆
Beryl need her own outro and intro, the Old Gbs outro sound is like the cherry on top every time
I concur
Curries from around the world please, so different in each country. (special mention to the original Chicken Tikka Masala from Glasgow, an inauthentic dish created for a bland Western palate that then spread back around the world from Scotland)
*bland british palate.. there's great food in other parts of Europe
"Curries" don't exist in India. They are meat/veg dishes with or without a sauce. They're not called curries.
@@Nate2.4 I tried it once and I literally wept..... For my 11bucks. Damn it still hurts to think about it.😔😔😔
@@Nicolacurran1 Yeah. The Europeans just could not be bothered to learn all the real names of the dishes and jut called almost anything just "curry" ;)
@@Nicolacurran1 No. Curry do exist in India. Heard about curry leaves??
Its just, not all dishes in india is called as curry.
Well i was missing Great Big Stories and you are here, Thank God.
Why does the Swedish sandwich cake remind me of Joey eating Rachel's trifle?
Salmon good
Rye Bread good
Egg Salad goood
its not really a smörgåstårta. a real one tends to have salmond and shrimp as toppings and a filling of eggs and tuna. or the meat version with ham and fruit. both are often made using white bread.
@@np02058 Those toppings she used are totally what could be used in a smögårdstårta, because you can basically use whatever you want! I've seen so many different variations and this was definitely within the common varitaions. I've never seen it made with ryebread though, so that is a mistake if any.
@@Narnendil i have had a burger with béarnaise sauce. That does not mean thats a typical burger. What you said can apply to any food.
Omg same
That's basically the way that I make Smörgåstårta 😂
Anything good goes... 🤷
I never understood adding the cherry to the "Toast Hawaii"! For me the sandwich is very reminiscent of my childhood, because I could whip it up myself, but I do think it has lost its popularity in Germany over the years!
Neither did I: Poor cherry became a piece of plastic :/
we have it in the Netherlands too, but then it's bread on both sides. I love it sooo much!
@@Marjoleinee nog nooit van gehoord haha
@@faroukfarouk2279 nog nooit gehoord van een tosti hawai??
You know what? I think I am going to make it later today for myself, just because I haven't had that in aaaages. But I am probably also going to make what my mom made for me when I was a kid and didn't like warm pineapple: canned tuna and tomato slices, same preparation 😁
For Germany it should have been the "Mettbrötchen" :D But i also like Hawaitoast but F that Cherry :D
Pretty dangerous to get mett or the equivalent outside of Germany. There are strict standards for mett for a good reason
@@Raichiyu i know i work as a butcher in Germany. But if you have a Butcher yo trust this shouldn't be a Problem.
Ohh I had that when I was in Germany! I was a little scared but your food is much better tasting and safer
Hm... that's difficult. Yes, Mettbrötchen is way better, but is it a Toast?
@@19marmot95 the Video is about sandwiches not about toast.
Showing what foods cities and countries from all over are famous for is always interesting. For example Sudbury Ontario is famous for porchetta sandwiches.

I would love to see a video on pancakes from around the world! 🥞

Yes! Our favorite is okonomiyaki from Osaka. Its savory and there are many fun topping possibilities.
@@sarahlassiter2819 Ooh, that's a great suggestion. I love the okonomiyaki from Hiroshima as well.
Greetings from Trinidad. u did a great job on representing our most famous food item. For a real kicker the habanero peppers are normally blended with lots of garlic and shadow benny (local version of culantro) as the accompanying sauce for doubles. Keep up the good work.
PS: you could add shredded cucumbers with the skin on as a topping on the doubles. It adds the extra yum
Good attempt. Also add mango, tamarind or pomcetheyre chutney. And roasted pepper sauce
Imagine her doing currant rolls. That would be so cool
don't forget the sweet sauce
What about an episode on Sauerkraut, which is used in Germany, France, Poland and Russia? I think it would be interesting to see the difference in preparation and use.
And I love your videos!
Thank you!!! I do love sauerkraut
Fermented food around the world ?
It could be drink or solid
i like this idea
Some of the themes that pops into my mind :
1) steamed foods
2) fried foods
3) comfort foods
4) region wise foods (eg., African, Indian, Indian sub-continent, East Asian or even country wise)
I’m from Trinidad... we pronounce it as bah-ra and I’m so glad you like it! Kudos on making it yourself lol
Yaaaaaay, you're first offical video as an independent content creator!!!...can't wait for your channel to grow Beryl 🧡💫
The smörgårtårta is almost always served at funerals.... but i would not call this a sandwich. There are so many sandwiches from sweden, shrimp sandwich is the most popular sandwich here. It has eggs, mayo, shrimps, lemon, dill, and sometimes other things too. Its really good

I always wonder what cheese "Swiss cheese" actually is.
Kind regards
A Swiss
I think most times Americans talk about 'Swiss cheese' they actually mean Emmental, however I could be wrong
Lol we just rename everything here in America. You would know it as Elemental Cheese. I was Very confused the first time I say it at a grocery store in Belgium 😂
Good question! It is the kind with the big holes in it. :)
Thought the same but then I thought: we germans often use those disgusting separately packed Toast Cheese slices for Hawaii Toast so it must be better. Emmentaler is definitely better
Guess Americans call every cheese with holes: swiss cheese. Even Jarlsberg.

I had the Swedish one when I visited there a few years back. The family that was hosting me had straight up made like.. a 13x9 cake pan of sandwich
But did you not enjoy it? My favourite is the ones with a tuna sallad situation in them or Skagen :)
The Trinidad and Tobago sandwich looked just like chole bhature from India. I love it so much. Before the covid times my family had it for breakfast every Sunday❤️

- dumplings (from Germany: Schwäbische Maultaschen)
- pastry (from Germany: Quarktaschen or Quarkstrudel with „quark“ and rasins, Puddingbrezel, Franzbrötchen with cinnamon, Apfelstrudel, Berliner with marmalade, Nussecken with nuts and chocolate...)
- cabbage (from Germany: Rotkohl with potato dumplings and pork roast or Kohlrouladen which is meat rolled and baked in cabbage

BERYL YOU"RE BACK I'M CRYING AND SO HAPPY. I CAN'T-
5:49 Note that the rye should be fine grain rye.
Forgot to mention butter and boiled eggs, btw. (Swedes are not afraid of fat and cholesterol.)
I think everybody or every family hast their own ingredients for "Strammer Max“ you just need a crispy bread and an egg in top 🤷🏻♀️
Bei uns in der Gegend ist ein strammer max kein belegtes Brot sondern Bratkartoffeln mit Leberkäs uns Spiegelei....
The Cuban sandwich is my go-to sandwich. A staple of the Cuban American community
