    I changed my pricing model last year and it's working well. I don't buy lots and only list items over $25. I combine multiple items if I buy several pieces of similar things such as the same style of pottery or glass. I only buy items that sell for over $30. Now that I have a lot of inventory, I buy fewer than 10 items per store when I thrift so I have less to process and list faster. I price high, give great discounts and accept most offers if they make sense. I also ship only twice a week and stopped working on weekends.

    I can't believe you are talking about this! I just started doing this the past 3 weeks, I've lotted up or redonated about 75% of my store. I am not even bothering to obtain inventory if I can't list it for $40. I'm not full time (yet) but realized after doing the math that I was only making about $2.50 for every $10 sale (after cost of goods, ebay fees, shipping supplies, TAXES, cost of gas, wear and tear on the vehicle, etc). Like you the big eye opener was the time, driving to the post office daily to drop off an $8 item was becoming a waste of time (still a small store). Good luck!

    Hi Kat.This really resonates. Being below poverty level for so long I’m in the habit of only wanting to pay 1 or a few dollars and passing over higher price things that I know darn well will fetch more. It’s hard for me to turn my brain around and get out of poverty consciousness. I’m starting to recognize when I passed by something that I should have got and when I got something that I should have left. Uuugh🙄 it’s a process!!

      Yes im all about low buying too and have gradually increased what I'll pay over the years if I have the research to back up the purchase. I don't take big risks with higher dollar items those I want to see facts that they will sell

      @groovytemple just a tip, go to the library and get all the books by Barbara Stanney author if Overcoming Underearning. She is from the 90s and has great exercises to understand that scarcity ir scare-city mentality no matter the income and learn how to flip it. Also anything by Michael Bernard Beckwith, especially Life visioning. I have a master's degree used to have a private practice in psychotherapy but had to close it due to health issues and been on SSDI for 15 yrs and poverty level, so I hear you, and you are spot on the right track that the $$$ begins with your mindset, then it will change in the eternal environment. ❤❤😊

    My main problem and something I've got to work on is listing more. I have tons of inventory that was given to me by my aunt. Some expensive items included. Many high dollar shoes new in box, clothes new with tags. The list goes on and on. My problem is every day it seems there is someone asking me to help them in some way. My friends and family. It's as if they don't see what I do as a job. So my time is being spent doing things for everyone else. My goal every day is to list but the past few months I've only listed once every few days. Sometimes even once a week. I've been struggling with making them all understand I need to work. It's really been bothering me alot lately. I don't want to disappoint my friends or family but something has got to give.

      I would learn to say no to them. Listen to Mel Robbins I think she actually has a video on saying no it was her or Oprah. Don't feel bad for it as you need to eat and pay bills so remember that when they ask for help. Maybe say I'm finishing up some work it will be about two hours then I can help (once you finish listing) putting yourself first is not a bad thing remember that!

    First of all, Happy Mother's Day! Last night I decided to do the same. I only have 125 listings, but recently it's been very difficult to source for the higher end items I'm used to in the thrift stores so I've been buying "whatever"! Well, BAD IDEA. I sell mostly linens and tableware...plush and clothes just aren't going to do it for me so I have to stick to what I know and love. I have so much stuff I need to get rid of, I feel better knowing I'm not alone! Thank you for all the information you provide through all your videos, I've learned so much from watching you the last couple of years!

It definitely helps me to be more strategic in my sourcing.

    You go girl!! I’m a couple steps behind you in my eBay journey, but have similar goals as yours. Kudos to focusing on higher dollar items. My ASP is $35 and I’m also working on increasing it. Remember, it takes about the same amount of time to list a $5 item as a $100 one, so maximum your time and get more time back. Look at those lower dollar items as time suckers and feel good about your decision, for this part of your journey. Btw, I really love your research videos. All the best from So Cal, Kate @ Sage Tree Finds

    The low dollar items tend to be the most work and create the biggest headaches for me. I started out with only high ticket ($200+) items but realized that was really restricting my flow sales-wise so started adding in lower ticket items. Ultimately, those lower ticket ($20 and under) items have been my biggest headaches. In over 400 sales I've had exactly one high ticket headache (eBay paid them, I did not) but at least a half dozen with low ticket items. Those items are just as much work to list but they make no money and the scammers ("don't recognize the charge", "bought by mistake", etc.) are numerous.

    @M322233 Місяць тому +6

    Kat, I admire your honesty, most folks can't be honest even with themselves.
    I have no business background, but I feel that carefully choosing items to list is very challenging for a large store (it is easy to vet 200 items but not 5,000).
    Same as you hire an accountant, you can hire a business consultant to do modeling for different scenarios (these models include large errors, and you have to spend money, but you would get an idea of what to expect). You would enter the number for the desired revenue and profit, the types and prices you want to list, payroll amount, average sell-through for this category at this price range, and so on. The consultant would show you graphs, for example, if you want $1,000 profit, you would have to list 50 items at $50 or 200 items at $10. They may recommend increasing listing for one category and reducing or stopping listing for another (sell more gold jewelry and stop selling the costume one).
    This research is endless, but I would check the price search and purchase range for a category, what do buyers pay for silver jewelry? If you go up from $15 to $45, would you get fewer views and fewer sales, so this price increase would not compensate for the lost sales?
    If you list fewer items, you can replace two current employees with one with more say in what to pick (with more expertise).
    I'm a very new seller and I've learned to check for changes in availability and prices for my listed items. I had an item not available in craft stores, but the store found more of it and has been selling it again (I've cut my price and sold it). I am also thinking that the crowd of buyers may suddenly switch from one style and run for the other, and I have to know it (let's say nobody would want hand-embroidered items anymore and start buying striped linens).
    As a fresh buyer, I go for more sales, so I am happy to sell $10 and lower-priced items.
    But I am not sure if eBay won't like it if a large store gets a lower number of items sold, even if your revenue goes up (if you sell 500 items instead of 1,500 items and increase your revenue and profit).

    • @TheNurseFlipper
      @TheNurseFlipper  Місяць тому +2

      The problem with that is assuming you could find x type of items which isn't always the case. You might find a lot in one category for a while then it goes dry. That's why I think setting the price point and profit will work better. Comping for what's selling should help with figuring out changes in trends as well.

    Your willingness to provide guidance and share refreshing ideas is so inspiring. I want to eliminate my 'death pile' before venturing forth to buy more stock. I'm steadily weeding out everything that doesn't move fast enough in order to make way for items I can feel more confident about displaying. Frugality is a virtue balanced by objectivity and practicality, thus every time I dispose of some things which I know aren't worth keeping, I pat myself on the back and bask in the glow of accomplishment, lol. Many things just aren't worth the trouble of listing and storing, and I should have known better. The process of streamlining for efficiency requires a combination of patience and laser-focused determination along with dedicated commitment to a workable plan, and you are definitely helping me to solidify that plan into some very tangible, reachable goals. I give most of my stock a chance just to see what happens, but decided fairly early on that if I don't see an encouraging response almost immediately (for me, about three months) -- I won't allow it to take up my space anymore.

But I do need to evaluate what is worth selling at a lower price and what is not. I do put the date I listed something in the sku so I can track how old it is. At this point, if something that is a lower vaklue item does not sell in a year I pull it and donate it to a local church resale shop. If the price is $20 or above I wil give it two years if it is still getting views. And I make sure I use that make an offer and send a buyer an offer features. It does help move things along.

    Hi Kat. Colette in South Florida here. 🙂 I love your transparency.👍🏻😀 You feel so accessible... moreso than most youtubers. I agree that you have the knowledge to raise your level and move away from the lower price stuff and am excited to watch you make that transition🎉. For whatever reason, in the year and a half I've been selling online I've always been geared to higher dollar stuff that lists for $20 or more. I just found it more satisfying! Thanks to JRide Flips who was the first person i heard talking about sell through rate, i now focus also on whether the things i find will sell in about 90 to 180 days. If it won't, i leave it behind. I dont always assess this well, but im getting better. My husband's job pays the bills so this is just extra money for us but i like the challenge of getting more skilled and knowledgeable and watching all my numbers so i know my average fees and average net profit per item etc... and i want to grow this and really make serious money, so i am with you on no small dollar amount stuff. 👍🏻😀 Thank you for your videos. Hope you had a great mommas day ❤🙂

    I'm old so growing every year isn't really a goal for me personally😂 That said, I've been trying to weed out the low-dollar listings (things under $10) but sometimes it's so hard to do that because I think some of my shoppers might have a budget and a $15 or more (plus shipping) item might be out of their price range. I need to get that out of my head but it's easier said than done. I hope this new setup works out well for you and it's actually good for the folks like me who also buy lots at auctions and don't mind selling the $10-$20 items 😉 Happy Mother's Day!

    Hey hun! We have been making similar changes in our business as well. With Cameron’s back going out in February we realized we needed to do less work for more profit. It’s been a fantastic change so far! I also think that if your STR rate is higher, it feeds the ebay algorithm. This is just personal experience. So taking down a good amount of stale listings may just give your store a boost! Another change we’re making is to hunt more often but leave with less. I’m sourcing 3-4 days a week now but ONLY picking up items with either a high STR or will make us a $50 bill. Please keep us updated! Welcome to year 3 of full time (we’re doing the dang thang! 💪🏼) Xoxo

I do it because I don't have the space but hearing you say you're going after the higher dollar items is exactly what I decided to do. I am learning a lot from watching your videos and I am agreeing with you that even on my very small operation I have decided to restrain my impulse to list something for under ten and focus more honing in on my style or I should say staying focused on the items that are giving me a good sell through rate. Hi Kat, long time, no comment, but I couldn’t agree with you more. I’m at that same crossroad and I too have come to many of the same conclusions that you have. I’m working too hard for too little money. As of this month, I’m avoid ALL items that won’t sell for at least $20 and not interested in selling those even if I acquire them in a lot. I’ll either flea market or garage sale them or donate them rather than fool with them on eBay or any of the selling platforms (I’ll never be on Whatnot, I don’t see it’s useful to anyone without a social media presence). I’m at 1500 items in my store, and my goal is the same - pare down to about half by removing everything that’s either less than 10-12 dollars and/or been in the store over 2 years. Thanks for the inspiration to push myself in a more profitable direction, oh mentor 😉.

      I hear you, my secondary goal is to shut down my storage unit. I was once at 10x20, and now 10x10, but I’m hoping by June, that expense will be behind me. Once you add up the rent and see how much it adds to your costs of goods, it’s better to give it away than continue to pay storage rent. 😮
