From Evergreen to the Intellectual Dark Web, Heather Heying

  • Until recently Heather Heying and her husband Bret Weinstein were teachers at Evergreen College, until they were targeted by a student mob and became the most high profile victims of campus militancy.
    They are now both members of the new constellation of internet personalities known as the Intellectual Dark Web (IDW).
    In this conversation with Rebel Wisdom's David Fuller, Heather discusses her journey so far, why sex and gender are the hottest topics for the modern left and why there are so few other women in the IDW.
    Rebel Wisdom is a platform for the biggest ideas around.

      As JP would say, “who said life is fair”. It’s easy to go along and stay silent as many of their former colleagues and administration at Evergreen did. Brett and Heather paid a price (comfortable middleclass lifestyle) for intellectual honesty, but the flip side is the recognition and opportunities that it may bring.

      Perhaps they were initially a bit more naive up front about what they were getting into than JBP. His psychological back ground allowed him to assess the likely path his C16 objectionist position was going to lead to up front, from day one. But I'm quite certain that, being the highly intelligent folks they are, they picked up pretty early on that there were going to be consequences and Brett in particular make the same choices JBP did. Truth and principles over the short term financial factors.

      There are the few who will make a stand for the good of the many.
      It's great if you can get tenured and / or a major settlement too of course, but regardless *the events that preceded Eric's dismissal were so objectionable, so antisocial and fundamentally racist* as to not warrant greater caution.
      Evergreen's incautious ways are it's own demise as well as the threat to the future of youths.

    I have been a commercial fisherman in Alaska for my entire adult life, I’ve used the money to travel the world climbing first ascents and surfing for the past 11 years. I came into contact with Heather, Brett, and Eric’s work through Sam Harris’s podcast a couple years ago. Their insights changed my entire world view. I quit my fishing career and started school, I’m now through my second quarter with a 3.9 average and transferring to Cornell. Thanks you guys, your wisdom has inspired me greatly and changed my life.. I hope I can someday help make an impact and be part of great conversations like these.

    Such an important thinker and THANK YOU @David Fuller for being such a superb interviewer. It's rare to find interviewers that can keep the conversation travelling on a fruitful and interesting journey without super-imposing their own agenda or biases on the interviewee. My only complaint is that this conversation is so short! And so disappointing that this kind of conversation only gets 20,219 views (and worse still 981 likes), compared to the millions of views some other tripe gets. Hopefully in the longer term we see this change. Imagine if the likes of Heather Heying were the women vying for roles in politics - or at the very least having influence over those with power - how different might the world look? Or for that matter, any of the thinkers currently being heard on what we call the IDW? That's the world I want my children to live in! Evergreen really screwed themselves in letting Heying & Weinstein go; but their loss is the world's gain.

    When I was with the U.S. Department of Defense, "Stay in your lane." was a favorite phrase of military leadership. But the military, in order to do its job effectively, must be authoritarian. I marvel at the creation we are a part of, the great silence of the natural world, but I'm deeply saddened by the never ending wars, political or otherwise, of the human world. The young people at the school began an uprising that was as radical as it was misguided, as the radical identity and victimhood politics of the modern left became so concentrated and extreme among the student body that they began a revolt that was almost similar to Phnom Penh in the mid 1970's. Watch the UA-cam videos of what went on. It was a culturally significant, canary-in-the-coalmine moment, where we see modern leftist politics going to its full logical (and quite insane) conclusion.

    Interesting conversation on political right and left. Might be useful, here, to make the distinction between 'individual' and 'collective' domains because both right and left have lost their way, but in different domains. The left has lost the plot in the individual domain, too often trampling on individual rights like free speech and being obsessed with political correctness and identity politics. The right, conversely, has lost the plot in the collective domain by conflating individual freedom with laissez-faire economic liberalism.

    Re: Women's presence in IDW. Apart from differences in agreeableness which may attribute to that two things came to my mind: a. IDW came out of UA-cam, there are fearless Women of great intellect e.g. Ayan Hirsi Ali; Camille Paglia and many more. Question whether the fact that they have not been so involved in the online community may have contributed to that impression that there are no women in IDW. Ayan Hirsi Ali has been deplatformed and hunted down for her thinking way before others. b. Everyone uses their potential in a best possible way to contribute to the society in ways that the society needs that change. It may be that some of those women do great work behind the scenes and it is not so visible. At this stage I would focus on everyone and each contribution to the shared effort to save our civilisation from the self-distructive path we are on. Men and women being in harmonious union is a key to that.

      @@claudesigma3784 I'm not really interested in ultimate top or ultimate bottom of the heap ranking - I'm responding to the reflection that "such women are hard to find". There are many women with deep and highly developed areas of study. They aren't necessarily interviewed on youtube, but they populate many fields the world over.

      @Claude Sigma:
      I suspect both sides of this friendly debate are actually correct, in their own way.
      Rea is correct in that women of this type ( strong and confident in their intelligence and the convictions they acquire from it, yet open minded and caring at their core , able to have their mind meter their emotions without going so far as to seem "male" in persona) , while perhaps not common, do exist in certain areas in numbers. They are not the proverbial needle in a haystack.
      But ... as a man looking for one, you DO have to look in the right places ... because there are certainly many milieus where you will find almost no evidence of them. On that point, you are correct.
      They are largely found in academic and professional circles. So the keys as a man to securing one for yourself are to:
      A. adopt an educational and career track that puts you in circles that are frequented more regularly by these women.
      B. Be socially active within those circles.
      C. Have some of your own accomplishments within those areas. A woman of worth is unlikely to attach herself to a man who is not similarly , if not greater, accomplished than herself.
      D. The earlier you get started on the above, the better. The more time goes by, the less of them near your age are left, the older you are, and therefore , after a certain point, the less attractive you might be to the youngest of them.
      In the end, it comes down to what kind of woman do YOU , in your deepest heart of hearts, really feel you have earned and come to deserve ... as long as you do some of the basics above, men usually find THAT woman, sooner or later.

      @@richardlefaive1944 I'm not sure about your demographics but intelligent, educated, open minded women who are grown up and emotionally mature abound in my environment. So too men. Of course there are very average people out there as well, but it seems to me like attracts like. Or at minimum often what we see in the other is what we project onto them. That might be part of the problem if you feel you "find almost no evidence of them" in your milieu.

    The 2 problems I have with the IDW is the general lack of aggression and their establishment elitism towards influential thinkers who were never a part of the establishment. Most IDW have been part of the establishment their whole lives.

    • @richardlefaive1944
      @richardlefaive1944 5 років тому

      This seems like an extension of "its of the patriarchy ( wrong assumption #1) so it must be tainted and bad ( leading to wrong assumption #2)" thinking. And in what way is their memebership and views biased towards influential thinkers who "come from the establishment"?. If by "establishment" you mean a bias towards accredited scientists who have published scientific trials and works that contain details about their methodology and data , which were then heavily cited ... well, shame on them for preferring to quote and leverage information coming from those types of sources ;o) .
      Secondly, to call 2 Evergreen profs ( Brett and Heather) of 15 years "establishment" seems like a stretch. Given that org's historical mandate, how they in particular pursued it, and their non paper publishing tendencies.
      The rest of the IDW whose names and careers I'm familiar with ... OK, I'm going to grant you that a "long time links to the establishment" characterization is reasonably fair. But It doesn't mean they haven't been rebels within their various fields and organizations. EricW, JBP, Douglas Murray, and Naraz certainly have.
      The better way to evaluate them is as truth tellers.Yes or no, regardless of their establishment \ institutional back ground ?
