    Take 1 cup of regular flour, take out 2 tablespoons of the flour. Add two tablespoons of cornstarch. This will give you 1 cup of cake flour.

    If you're thinking of substituting something like splenda, yes...and it usually measures cup for cup.

    Yes vinegar is necessary as it's reaction with the baking soda is what causes the cake to rise/lighten.

    cake flour has cornstarch mixed in with it...makes cakes light and fluffy.

    I did use gel paste, but if you want a less vibrant colour, go with less gel. Have fun!

    yes, because you need the vinegar's reaction with the baking soda. if you're worried about having too much vinegar, use lemon juice in your milk instead (1 tbsp/cup)

    You need to use vinegar as it reacts with the baking soda to act as a leveling agent. You could try a different vinegar if need be, but I recommend using white.

    Yes, the dye is optional, but if you don’t use it, your cake will only have a very slight shade of red.

    it is my personal opinion that cream cheese icing goes best with red velvet, but obviously you can put whatever icing you want on your cake. and again, obviously, you can put whatever dye you want in the cake.

    Lovely video. It is after 9PM where I am so I will bake this cake tomorrow. It looks so yummy. I like the buttermilk so much more than the oil that some use. Ugh! Who wants a cake full of oil? Not me. Thanks again.

    Cake flour has the addition of cornstarch, which makes it lighter and fluffier for baked goods :) We have a video up on how to make your own if you are interested...it's super easy!

    You're a lifesaver! I have to make a cake for today ( it's almost 3 am lol) and I just wanted to have a nap in the afternoon but woke up when stores were closed already and I didn't had any buttermilk -_-

      you can make your own butter milk by adding a tbspn of white vinegar or lemon juice into a cup of milk. let it stay for 5-10mins and taadaa

    No, it's not too heavy....as long as you're not putting an extremely thick layer of it...which would cause stress to any cake.

    When using self rising flour, it is common to "omit baking powder and salt from recipe" BUT since this recipe doesn't use baking powder, it uses baking soda (which reacts with the vinegar) I wouldn't recommend the substitution for this cake. If you try it, let me know if it works.

    The temp and time is stated in the video....cake flour is best, but you could also use AP flour

    im assuming english and american granulated sugar are the same (i lived in london for a year, and i don't remember it being different). Do you have white wine vinegar? you could try that? or maybe even rice vinegar.

    Use bake even strips on your pans to prevent doming ... or just level your cake with a long knife after it's baked.

    When I was about ten years old, I came across a recipe for a red velvet cake and decided to make it. Well, we didn't have any red food coloring, but we did have GREEN (McCormicks Brand). It tasted just fine but was a very unappetizing color -- think baby diaper change. That is one of my earliest (& funniest) baking memories.

      Cool i tried making choclate failed misrebly but it still tasted delicious and the was no unnatural sugar inside so it was healthy choclate in a way

    Cake Flour Substitution ...you will have to make enough to fulfill the recipe's requirements
    * All-Purpose flour (just under one cup)
    * 2 Tbsp. cornstarch
    Preparation:
    1. Place two tablespoons of cornstarch in a one-cup measure.
    2. Fill the rest of the cup with all-purpose flour.
    3. Use in place of the cake flour in any recipe.

    Usually cakes baked from scratch are heavier (denser) than box mixes. How should you use the cake recipe for the pan, or what are you asking...sorry I don't understand your question?

    If there isn't enough chocolate in this cake, try our chocolate cake recipe by searching our channel. You can use any kind of icing to cover this cake if you don't like cream cheese. Why don't you try chocolate to give it the taste you love?!?

    Good to know you can create butter milk with normal milk and a bit of lemon juice. I find it such a pain to get hold of proper butter milk. This cake looks delicious and I'm looking forward to trying out your recipe.
