thanks so much for subscribing...and yep, running my own bakery business has definitely NOT been good for the waistline. Thanks for the upbeat comments!
yes, because you need the vinegar's reaction with the baking soda. if you're worried about having too much vinegar, use lemon juice in your milk instead (1 tbsp/cup)
You need to use vinegar as it reacts with the baking soda to act as a leveling agent. You could try a different vinegar if need be, but I recommend using white.
Yes, you can, but if you're interested in seeing how easy it is to make cake flour, check out our video on how to do it yourself...it's super easy and can be used in a pinch.
Thanks a lot for this video!!!!! I'm a 18 year old guy and I made it for the birthday of my nephew (who just became 1) I totally nailed it in the first attempt and everyone loved it!!!! Superb recipe :-D
it is my personal opinion that cream cheese icing goes best with red velvet, but obviously you can put whatever icing you want on your cake. and again, obviously, you can put whatever dye you want in the cake.
Lovely video. It is after 9PM where I am so I will bake this cake tomorrow. It looks so yummy. I like the buttermilk so much more than the oil that some use. Ugh! Who wants a cake full of oil? Not me. Thanks again.
Cake flour has the addition of cornstarch, which makes it lighter and fluffier for baked goods :) We have a video up on how to make your own if you are interested...it's super easy!
I used this recipe, two batches, for a 12" round birthday cake and everyone loved it! Great texture, so yummy. This is my new go-to red velvet recipe! Thanks Jenn, it's amazing.
You're a lifesaver! I have to make a cake for today ( it's almost 3 am lol) and I just wanted to have a nap in the afternoon but woke up when stores were closed already and I didn't had any buttermilk -_-
you know what jenn? you're the best!! I've tried this recipe and it turned out perfect! the cake was soft and delicious, plus this is my first time baking a red velvet cake that i just couldn't believe that i made it so well 😂 thanks to you! 💛
Im from singapore, and i made this cake together with your cream cheese frosting and .... IT TURNS OUT GREAT! Made this for like quite a number of times cause my family and friends keep requesting for it. Thank you for sharing the recipe! ;)
When using self rising flour, it is common to "omit baking powder and salt from recipe" BUT since this recipe doesn't use baking powder, it uses baking soda (which reacts with the vinegar) I wouldn't recommend the substitution for this cake. If you try it, let me know if it works.
Getting cakes made from scratch is an investment in the baker/decorator's time and fresh ingredients....I know as I am one :) I hope you get some use from this recipe.
im assuming english and american granulated sugar are the same (i lived in london for a year, and i don't remember it being different). Do you have white wine vinegar? you could try that? or maybe even rice vinegar.
Yummm I am making this for a wedding cake order next week Cookies Cupcakes and Cardio as my other wedding cake order with your from scratch vanilla cake was very successful!! love your vids! thanks for sharing
Just wanted to say I made this cake for my birthday, and my friends loved it so much! I live in Brazil and red velvet isn't a very popular cake here, I never had it since I moved here. So thank you so much, it was perfect! And I love your channel :))
When I was about ten years old, I came across a recipe for a red velvet cake and decided to make it. Well, we didn't have any red food coloring, but we did have GREEN (McCormicks Brand). It tasted just fine but was a very unappetizing color -- think baby diaper change. That is one of my earliest (& funniest) baking memories.
Cake Flour Substitution ...you will have to make enough to fulfill the recipe's requirements * All-Purpose flour (just under one cup) * 2 Tbsp. cornstarch Preparation: 1. Place two tablespoons of cornstarch in a one-cup measure. 2. Fill the rest of the cup with all-purpose flour. 3. Use in place of the cake flour in any recipe.
Usually cakes baked from scratch are heavier (denser) than box mixes. How should you use the cake recipe for the pan, or what are you asking...sorry I don't understand your question?
If there isn't enough chocolate in this cake, try our chocolate cake recipe by searching our channel. You can use any kind of icing to cover this cake if you don't like cream cheese. Why don't you try chocolate to give it the taste you love?!?
my favorite cake is red velvet i always make the one from the box but with this recipe i will be able to bake one for my family thank you for that recipe you the best. from puerto rico you have a new fan here.
tried this recipe and it was awesome.. I followed it to the core.. thank you so muchhh.. I made a red velvet cake recipe from a blog last time and it turned out to be a disaster but this was amazing.. and my family loved it :)
Good to know you can create butter milk with normal milk and a bit of lemon juice. I find it such a pain to get hold of proper butter milk. This cake looks delicious and I'm looking forward to trying out your recipe.
Thank you for sharing your recipe for Red Velvet Cake. It's a family favorite in my home :) I'm sure they'll love and appreciate the homemade version over the box version.
That is fabulous! I'm so happy to hear your friends and family like it. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for coming over and joining us!! I'm glad you liked the recipe.
My wife will really appreciate this video. She loves to bake cakes and I think this will be added in her list.
Thanks so much Karen! I'm glad you're spreading the cake to Brazil!!
Great! Thanks for watching!

I'm so glad you love it that much!!! Thanks for watching!
Are you still even alive
wow! thank you for saying that and i hope you enjoy baking as much as I do!
Take 1 cup of regular flour, take out 2 tablespoons of the flour. Add two tablespoons of cornstarch. This will give you 1 cup of cake flour.
ya, i thought it was kind of interesting too! thanks so much for watching! enjoy :)
That is absolutely great!! Glad it worked out for you. Thanks for letting me know, have a great day!
If you're thinking of substituting something like splenda, yes...and it usually measures cup for cup.
I tried it baking myself. And it's just so perfect. Thanks Jen for posting this video.
I hope you like it!! Your channel looks delciously yummy too!!! I'm off to watch some of your videos :) Thanks for stopping by!
Glad you think so :) Thanks for watching
I'm glad you stick around!
Yes vinegar is necessary as it's reaction with the baking soda is what causes the cake to rise/lighten.
cake flour has cornstarch mixed in with it...makes cakes light and fluffy.
I did use gel paste, but if you want a less vibrant colour, go with less gel. Have fun!
Yes, you can use gel...which is the same as what is used in the video
yes, because you need the vinegar's reaction with the baking soda. if you're worried about having too much vinegar, use lemon juice in your milk instead (1 tbsp/cup)
Yes, and we also have a video up on RV cupcakes
I'm a kid and not really experienced in baking but I love doing it! I can't wait to make this cake!
Yes, it does, but we also have a video specifically on RV Cupcakes too.

Yes, you will have to halve everything. Enjoy!
Yes, the dye is optional, but if you don’t use it, your cake will only have a very slight shade of red.

It's called "inVideo programming" in your UA-cam settings.

Yes..and I line them with wax paper as well as non-stick spray.
it is my personal opinion that cream cheese icing goes best with red velvet, but obviously you can put whatever icing you want on your cake. and again, obviously, you can put whatever dye you want in the cake.

Adrienne Turner I'm so glad you liked it that much!!
You can...just make sure it is all incorporated before baking.
You're a lifesaver! I have to make a cake for today ( it's almost 3 am lol) and I just wanted to have a nap in the afternoon but woke up when stores were closed already and I didn't had any buttermilk -_-
you can make your own butter milk by adding a tbspn of white vinegar or lemon juice into a cup of milk. let it stay for 5-10mins and taadaa
That's why I said she's a lifesaver cuz she mentioned it in the video:) Thank you anyways
I can't believe this, I still apply ur recipes since in my college time now am refreshing again and gonna bake it for my first born 💕
No, it's not too heavy....as long as you're not putting an extremely thick layer of it...which would cause stress to any cake.
You sure can! If you have time VOTE for us to win UA-cam’s OnTheRise program. Go to our main page and watch the VOTE video for details!
This is THE BEST recipe eeeever! I made it like four times now and love love love love love it. Great video, thanks!

No, it is personal preference as to how you decorate the cake.
When using self rising flour, it is common to "omit baking powder and salt from recipe" BUT since this recipe doesn't use baking powder, it uses baking soda (which reacts with the vinegar) I wouldn't recommend the substitution for this cake. If you try it, let me know if it works.
The temp and time is stated in the video....cake flour is best, but you could also use AP flour
You can make it a day or two ahead of time if you need to.
Yes, you can.
Getting cakes made from scratch is an investment in the baker/decorator's time and fresh ingredients....I know as I am one :) I hope you get some use from this recipe.

You're welcome! Glad it helped!
im assuming english and american granulated sugar are the same (i lived in london for a year, and i don't remember it being different). Do you have white wine vinegar? you could try that? or maybe even rice vinegar.
I'm a kindergarten teacher, so I took that. I'm self taught when it comes to baking.
no, you need the reaction of the baking soda with the vinegar as the final step.
Use bake even strips on your pans to prevent doming ... or just level your cake with a long knife after it's baked.
Yummm I am making this for a wedding cake order next week Cookies Cupcakes and Cardio as my other wedding cake order with your from scratch vanilla cake was very successful!! love your vids! thanks for sharing

You can use either...I use salted.
You can use a stand mixer or a hand mixer.
There are many conversion sites on the web I'm sure you can find one really quickly if you look.

You can use all purpose flour, it just won't be as fluffy/light.

I think this brand was called ColorFast...or something like that. I have recycled the bottle can't quite remember. I'm now using Americolor Gels.
