EPS - 13 bit magic can't be replicated. #2 ASR10 - It's the EPS16 on steroids. #3 EPS16 It's pure, powerful, but keeps you honest. #4 Mirage - how can you not have an 8 bit machine in your arsenal? Tough to rate these machines. They all have magic in them. I've been using my EPS16, as of late, to write new songs. It really has the best "direct to the music" kind of vibe. For what I do, I really have to watch my sampling time, though. It's pretty easy to fill up the EPS & EPS16 memory, even with the memory expanders. My advice is always to make sure you get these machines with maxed out memory & SCSI (on the EPS16 & ASR10). Mass storage really keeps your workflow reasonable.

EPS 16 Plus is better than the ASR-10 IMHO. The ASR is nice, but if you are looking for 90's era boom bap, loops and gritty drums with a very simple workflow I prefer the EPS 16 Plus. ask RZA !!
@@chrisgalactic Chris..well the EPS 16 + has anti aliasing and the ASR-10 does not. This stuff does affec the sound. I think the EPS sounds dirtier personally. I really like both machines.
@@analogcrunch4716 I say it's the opposite. The EPS 16+ is the cleanest sounding sampler ENSONIQ produced IMO. The ASR sounds much dirtier to my ears, and it has a boost on the high end, some sort of exciter that makes the hihats and cymbals stand out much more than they do on the EPS machines. The flat high end was always the weakest point of the EPS line. The highs have no ring to them. Plus, the ASR has many more FX algorithms. The FX on the 16 are very basic. Nice, but limited. You do have the option to change the bitrate on the EPS 16+, where as the ASR has only two bitrate options (22k and 44k). Personally, the FX on the ASR more than make up for it in my opinion. There are some amazing FX on the ASR, with a sound you simply cannot get using software.
I personally think people overrate the difference in sound. It’s definitely present but not huge by my perception at least. One of the key distinguishing features of the 16+ vs ASR-10 is the lower bitrate options, lower values definitely lead to a crunchier, more aliased sound, though this can be achieved by post-sample downsampling in the ASR-10 to achieve a similar effect. Also thought it worth adding - RZA only used the 16+ briefly in his career during the Wu-Tang phase. 36 chambers was a mixture of the 16+ and ASR-10 (more the latter than the former), and all later albums during the golden Wu-Tang period prior to around the second Wu-Tang album was the ASR-10. El-P is a good example of someone who stayed true to the 16+ (during the Company Flow/Cannibal Ox/early solo era at least), but it’s difficult to use his beats as a reference for its sound vs. ASR-10 since he always sampled in 22khz, so his beats all sound more digital/harsh. Saying all that, I’ve heard so many people praising the sound of the 16+, I might need to re-evaluate.
I have both. I have done a variety of sound tests. Asr 10 sounds virtually identical after downsampling (11.2khz). Like the eps 16plus with direct sampling rates (11.2 khz). I think the asr sounds even better if you sample youtube, spotify for example. (because of the newer converters) It's a little bit more time consuming to generate in the Asr lofi sounds but at the end of the mix you can not hear any big differences. Reduce sampling rates digitally does not sound so good on many samplers. (Newer mpc’s) At asr 10, that's different. Minimal audible differences to eps16plus. With Drums your hear a litte little bit. I only notice few differences if I sample vinyl with 45 rpm then reduce the samplerate and pitch down after.. Asr 10 sound is a bit darker lofi with more lowend. Eps 16 plus bit more shiny, grimey. But for me is not worth to have both. The reason why many later 90s hip hop production or RZA productions are cleaner is the fact that they sample almost with 44.1 in the asr. This sounds cleaner. With enough ram (16 or 32mb) sampletime is not a problem & you get the best quality.. In the eps 16plus you have only 2 megabyte this forces you to sample with lower samplerates. This fact makes the sound more dirty.. but to dirtyness is no problem on the asr10. It only needs more time to do that. (Only 2 fix samplerates) The fact for me why the asr 10 is the winner is the asr 10 has no strange klick sounds on heavy bass sounds or samples., more fx, more ram and the fact that sampled stuff from pc sound better.
Do you still have it? I recently got mine out of storage and am using it as a master keyboard controller and sequencer. I am nowhere near feeling like I know how to use it well. But it is extremely powerful. Mine had heat issues, but all I had to do was create an air barrier under it by raising it up off the little table I had it on. There is a guy on UA-cam that has some cool tutorials on using the Transwave function on the sampler part of the machine. The sounds just need a good beat under them IMHO. ua-cam.com/video/-Iy_0OSV7GM/v-deo.html

(because of the newer converters)
It's a little bit more time consuming to generate in the Asr lofi sounds but at the end of the mix you can not hear any big differences.
The sounds just need a good beat under them IMHO. ua-cam.com/video/-Iy_0OSV7GM/v-deo.html
dope beats, i also use the eps 16 plus, check my channel out when you get a chance and check out my soundcloud, soundcloud.com/monplacebo, dope description of the sampler, hope to see more beat videos from the eps 16 plus
