The genius behind the "Waveboy Industries" set of floppy additions to the EPS-16+ was Ensoniq's VP of DSP engineering, Bob Mauchly. I had the pleasure of meeting up with Bob at an AES conference in NY in the mid-90s, but had to wait to talk to him because he was engaged in a conversation with Wendy Carlos (engrossed is more like it -- one is never casually engaged in a conversation with Wendy Carlos). Bob was a gracious host and entertained me with insights into the development of the DSP algorithms used in the DP/4, DP/4+, and EPS-16+ for which he was responsible directly.

I wonder if Bob Mauchly is related to John Mauchly who was one of the inventors of the ENIAC computer at the University of Pennsylvania in the 1940s and went on to invent the UNIVAC and pretty much created the field of computer science and began the commercial computer industry that we know today. Both lived in that suburban Philadelphia area, where I am also from. (I was quite familiar with Ensoniq as they were practically in my backyard and once bought an SQ 2 from one of their sound designers. I still have a TS 12.) I did not know either Mr. Mauchly but my former wife actually went to high school with John Mauchly's daughter, Eva.

There's no better sound than sequencing ensoniq and Akai sounds into my DAW in 2024.
I never grasped the use of compression on drums from the start..I'd rather do it like 1990s and dump or trigger drums from my hardware. For that Matter bass and synths sound better doing it that way. I like to either add or lower the bass on my mixer or kicks until they don't clip. And just like that I have a Fuller sound going into the DAW, that way it's less work mixing. Imo

I once borrowed a friends EPS16+ for a couple of months in the early '90s and there were some Waveboy disks in his collection, I remixed some of my existing tracks with some of his samples and remember really enjoying working with this kit, we used to exchange disks of our tracks and work on each others projects, it stopped things becoming staganant and samey

Hi Espen! It's fantastic doing a video on Bill (yes, that's his true first name) Mauchly's effects. I hope you will do another video on the Voder and I recommend you use it in your music. There's nothing like it elsewhere in terms of sound and user interface. I was arguably the first one to use it on a professional album production in 1999 and I am proud of that. One of the effects you used is the frequency shifter. It sounds great with anything
Try it with voices. There's also a basic FM effect disk. The resonant filter disk contains Minimoog samples as well. Thanks to the famous Ensoniq low end, these samples sound great so I used them before I could afford a Minimoog. I used all the effects and the superb transwaves. These disks will give you a lot of inspiration and fun, I promise! Thank you!

    Cool video, Espen.
These machines, especialy ensoniq's ones, were more than "samplers I record and play", actualy, they were musical instruments, with their own way to make sounds.
My old EPSm "classic", can't handle theses FX disks but, well, If one day I find an ASR10, which can cope with that, at a fair price...
(as I already have an EPS I think an ASR could be a good complement)

Seems like a a disk for the Mirage that made it a kind of a wavetable synth. I know not the same as waveboy but similar vein as in redefining what it did. I have an EPS 16+ also I need to use once in awhile. I might have to find a copy of waveboy.
Also, Bill Mauchly is the son of John Mauchly. John was one of the co developers of the ENIAC computer. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ENIAC. technical.ly/person/bill-mauchly/

this is a very important sampler for street music, so like... boombap hiphop, techno, house, uk rave, breakbeat, jungle, etc.
that's what I think of with this sampler, just like the early akai's... I don't think it's suited for the 80's pop sound but it can obviously do that too.,
EDIT: basically, if you're using it to mimic corny saxophones and slap bass, you're using the sampler wrong... stick some overdriven sub bass 808s in it and kick-you-in-the-face tekno hoover real underground shit noises, and it;s YA BOI

That's great the floppy still works on your sampler. If the floppy goes out you may not be able to find another. I have a Korg 01W-FD and the floppy stopped working. It's a 720k drive and the firmware has to match. The floppy is no longer made and finding one that will match is very difficult. Here's the shocking thing with my situation. I have all my custom sounds saved to the floppy. The Korg 01W-FD has a CR-2032 battery that has to be replaced every 5 years. If the battery is removed without jumping power to the keyboard, then all sounds are lost and the default sounds have to be loaded in, with no way to re-load the custom sounds from the floppy. For all those 01W's sitting around collecting dust, the battery will eventually go dead and any custom sounds will be gone. It's probably a good idea to leave your sampler turned off if you are not using it. That way the floppy might last longer.

Have you ever considered to buy yourself a Floppy to USB device? You could then load the patches into a software editor on your computer...and from there send the patches back (when needed) via MIDI Dump from the PC straight into the RAM memory of your 01/WFD (assuming that you already have a MIDI-Interface for your computer...or an audio-interface with MIDI Ports). This one seems to be a "720K" type: www.amazon.de/Ccylez-5-Zoll-USB-Diskettenlaufwerk-Kartenleser-Ultraflaches-Diskettenlaufwerk-default/dp/B08BG1ZTS6/ref=sr_1_1?__mk_de_DE=%C3%85M%C3%85%C5%BD%C3%95%C3%91&crid=264UUQXFCLJZF&keywords=Ccylez+3%2C5+Zoll+USB+Diskettenlaufwerk%2C+Tragbarer+Kartenleser+Ultraflaches+Externes+Diskettenleser%2C+720+KB&qid=1650718621&sprefix=ccylez+3+5+zoll+usb+diskettenlaufwerk+tragbarer+kartenleser+ultraflaches+externes+diskettenleser+720+kb%2Caps%2C102&sr=8-1
