Imagine being able to see the anatomy going through the actual play... like an anatomy layer over the person, then strip away the person to show the bones, muscles, et al.... then discuss... the next level, doc
I jumped onto UA-cam right after the game just to see what Dr. Sutterer was saying about the severity of Ohtani's injury! 👏👏 Thanks for the update, Brian.
I dislocated my shoulder four times before finally getting a Bankart repair. Everything you describe is exactly what I experienced. You packed a lot of clear and concise info in such a short video.
The word out of Due Robert is that it was a mild subluxation and that all preliminary tests went very well. He'll be in the line up for game three no doubt.
I'm half Japanese. If you listen to audio, he said to thier Japanese team physician, Ohtani said, "something popped" the physician asked, "shoulder?"... He replied "tabun" which means "maybe".
This is all of the audio conversations picked up by Japanese TV. Ohtani: “My shoulder.” Trainer: ‘What?” Ohtani: ’My shoulder.” Trainer: ‘Which one?” Ohtani: ’My left one.” Trainer: ‘Did your left shoulder come off?” Ohtani: ’I think so.” Trainer: ”Are you sure?”
When I saw Shohei in pain, I was like “Oh hell no..” Really hope it’s just a minor soreness with no tear etc. If he’s out for 1 game, so be it. But I pray he is able to finish this WS out.
He should be okay to play, good news is that he has full strength and he has a day off to get his shoulder rehabbed, no way he’s sitting out this World Series
I tore my rotator when I dislocated my shoulder. The pain was high for that immediate moment, but I felt fine right after I slipped it back in myself before I even got a chance to go to the hospital. That sensation of my shoulder slipping back in place felt wonderful, honestly 😅
Absolutely. I popped my left shoulder out of socket in a mx race during a big get off. It hurts pretty bad while it's out but as soon as the medic popped it back in it felt normal again. Ended up getting the bankart surgery a year later as it popped out 2 more times. Now it feels super solid and I haven't had any issues with it since surgery.
The tear hurts some. If there is one. But neither the dislocation or initial injury hurt too bad for me. It was the uncomfortableness of lying there unable to move an arm, pushing myself up with my good arm and popping it back in that was the worst part.
I am by no means a Dodgers fan but how can anyone have seen that play and not be concerned for the most amazing player of this era. I’m hoping he’s back in the game quickly.
I shattered my ankle and traumatically dislocated my ankle last October in a really bad car accident. Stuff like your channel really helps me. I've had a ton of complications and just seeing something tangentially related in sports science and orthopedics is somehow cathartic and motivation What's crazy that I learned is I had a planar fracture which resulted in a bimalleolar break and of course the unstable ankle from getting hit by someone going 65mph and I was going 15-20mph. But I know people that have gotten a trimalleolar fracture just from hiking and 🤷 now it's broken The human body is so weird Now I'm going to do some PT because your videos always motivate me
I've had pretty much the same shoulder subluxation before. Not from baseball, but playing hockey. I took a big impact with my arm in almost the exact same position. I was able to use my shoulder within a few days, but any sort of muscle exertion and it felt like my arm was gonna fall off. Ohtani can technically play on it, but from my personal experience I can say the dude would have to be an absolute psycopath to try and play through that pain (but knowing Shohei that's exactly what he's gonna do).
@@MisterSkaa wow that’s crazy. Hockey ain’t no joke man tough sport. I bet so too that Shohei is gonna tough it out. Ain’t no way he sitting out of the fall classic
I have that exact injury ive been dealing with it for 5 years now sometimes my shoulder pops out on its own & it'll go back but that shit is excruciating pain. There is a nerve being pinched every time.
@3:27, his shoulders look fairly symmetric, although it could have spontaneously reduced itself. In other videos, the first thing he does is grab his wrist. While FOOSH is involved, it's a weird mechanism for FOOSH causing a shoulder dislocation when he's never had one. The wrist ligaments are far more delicate and equally likely to be injured, given the low energy impact.
Checked as soon as the game was over knowing Doc would have the video up. Hopefully Shohei is ok and comes back soon. Would hate to see his season end on a failed stolen base attempt Edit: Coming back to this comment as soon as I saw it was confirmed to be a subluxation.
Been watching you forever and watch all the videos but super excited to see a baseball video here! It was the only sport I was allowed to play growing up with my bone disease so I relate to it the most! Thanks Doc!
Problem is when you dislocate your shoulder (personally 3 times) there is a period of time where the shoulder is weakened and susceptible to dislocating again
This is fantastic. Thanks Doc! I’ve had a similar injury, so this is very interesting to me. You describe the method of injury mechanics very well, and the highlighted skeletal imagery is a helpful touch. Just a layman, but I also noticed that if it were a break involving the forearm, Shohei wouldn’t let the trainer hold his arm that way.
I had a similar dislocation when I was 25 years old, but it wasn’t as simple as, “pop it back in and in a few weeks, you’ll be fine….”. It actually popped back in on its own but I tore the labrum (nasty tear too) and required surgery. That was in March of 2000. I had my 5th shoulder operation in 2017 for the bicep tendon and wished that had been done back in 2000 as I haven’t had an issue since. Thanks Doc for the quick post once again.
Reports are that he left the stadium smiling, no sling etc. Manager D Roberts said slight subluxation & further test tonight & tomorrow. Doc you are good !!!

I had a shoulder subluxation 11 years ago that resulted in a small labrum tear. The thing that reinjured it more than anything else was taking the kids car seats out when they were babies. It was just the right pulling motion to pop that bone back through the same spot I tore.
lol you the man !! I wanted to find something like this and google all over no bs just what we are asking how hurt can he be and is he able to play world series
