You definitely need a guide to make the best from your trip. Also, some of those alleys in are drug dens, so be careful as you venture those streets. Mombasa street food is a must , you can try some at Mama Ngina Drive as you enjoy the beach side. The best beaches are outside of Mombasa, Diani, Watamu come top. Lamu is also a great historical place -first Swahili settlement on the East Africa Coast and the home and origin of the Kiswahili language.
His adventures are based on discovery and random travelling. If he had a guide then his channel would be as boring as all the other travel blogs. I love seeing his entrenched American believes being shattered in real time.
Lamu has a case as being one of the first settlements but it's generally not considered to be the origin of the Kiswahili language. That designation is generally given to Zanzibar.

Mombasa is one of these historical Swahili cities and towns that starts from old neighbourhoods of Mogadishu in the north, Marka, Barawe, Lamu, Malindi, Mombasa, Zanzibar, Dar es Salaam to Comoros.
They have fascinating history and are some of the oldest cities in Africa, so give a time to read them.
Daressalaam is a fairly recent one wouldn't include it in a histotical swahili town although, i would add Tanga, Bagamoyo, Kilwa, Lindi, Mtwara as the historical towns of the Swahili coast in present day Tanzania along with the infamous Islands of Zanzibar

Yes that's true the Arab slave trade started way before the trans-Atlantic slave trade n ended way after the trans Atlantic trade. There are some people in the middle east who still speak Kiswahili, especially omans and some yemenis .The oldest Swahili town is Lamu
One of my favorite parts of traveling is walking down alleys in the cities and seeing the old architecture. I visited Barcelona and walked the alleyways for hours. I love that you show us what these cities really look like, and arent just at some club or tourist trap.
I like that Kenya is diverse and the people live in harmony.

Great video and content. I'll be sure to follow. I'm from Philly but live in Mombasa and married here for a long time. Old Town is a great area and while it looks quite dated, and at night, some places are dark (lack of street lights) it's a fairly quiet area and safe. One thing to note about Fort Jesus. It's actually not named after a Christian or by the Portuguese. The name of the fort is Fort Isa, which is the Arabic/Muslim version of Jesus. Thus Fort Jesus is a transliteration of Fort Isa.

The Kenyan coast is also the birth place of the Swahili language which is a mixture of the Bantu languages of the hinterland plus the Arab languages of the spice and slave traders from the middle east.back in the 17th century
Rubbish!!! the Swahili language is not a mixture of Arab language. 98% of Swahili is indigenous, just because there are words borrowed from the Arab language, due to Islam, do not make it a mixture. Hindi and many other African languages borrow from the English language due to colonialization, however, that does not make the languages a mixture.

Careful crossing the roads Sly, the Matatu and Boda Boda drivers drive crazy and they don’t stop for anyone, unless of course you’re a customer!😂 You did well getting the Biryani it’s a signature dish of Mombasa. The salad thing is called Kachumbari (pronounced ka-choom-baa-ri)
I thought Biryani (beer annie) was an Indian dish ?

- Maharagwe ya nazi (kidney beans in coconut milk)
- Mahamri/Mandazi (hollow fried dough) which is one of the things the ladies in Nairobi mentioned.
- Pilau (rice and potato cooked with small pieces of meat).

I was in Mombasa Kenya in July 2021 for a month . I loved it my wife is from there .We got married there in Mikandani. I loved the food I put on 12 pounds in Kenya the food is great. Can't wait to go back there .

Felt very nostalgic watching this, but bruh there are way better places to get Biryani in Mombasa than Blue Room. 😆 Better quality at Barka Restaurant, Tarboush or Bin Agil. There are other lesser known names in Majengo Kingorani who cook even better. Street food I'd recommend Camel's Joint for mishkak, kebab, and definitely ask for the chilli sauce (pili pili). The other foods the ladies mentioned "mahamri", "viazi karai" you will find old ladies cooking outside their houses very early morning (pre-work hours) or evenings but these are mostly hit or miss. Look for the ones who seem to be crowded by people, most likely they have the best quality. Definitely ask for the chilli sauce here as well. And ask for "chachini" and "ukwaju" too. And you will have to ditch the spoon and fork here. Mama Ngina drive there's not a lot to do but if you're looking to chill and just watch ships coming into port or watch the ferries carry humanity to and from the island, this is the place to be. Best to go in evenings when it's cool but mind the traffic, it can get congested, especially on weekdays. And definitely go get some halwa at Seif Halwa, it's a kinda jelly-like 'dessert' of sorts, very popular in Swahili weddings. And as we say down there 'Mombasa Raha' so enjoy yourself.

The Portuguese brought natives from Goa to occupy Fort Jesus after it was built. But the Arab boy the Portuguese captured who was the son of the sultan was sent to Goa to study. The Portuguese had killed his father the Sultan when they captured Mombasa. When he was a young man he returned to Mombasa from Goa and he raised an army of locals and slaughtered everyone in Fort Jesus except for a few women and children who were put on a ship for Goa. A native of Goa, a Goan, who survived the massacre wrote a book, her name was Maria Braganza. Unfortunately most history books only state that they were only Portuguese citizens that were murdered when in fact it was a lot of natives from Goa, Goans, who were considered citizens of Portugal. Most people assume that people from India only arrived on the African coast when the British arrived in East Africa, which is not true, because the Goan people from India first settled at Fort Jesus in the 15th and 16th century.

I being a white English guy. Was stopped almost every 50 feet buy someone wanting to sell me something. Ask for money or just try to get with me in some way because they saw me as rich.
It can get tiring after a while but great to see how it is when you're not getting the hassle 🙃

BTW. The streets were also quite because there's a presidential election going on which has only just finished and people stay indoors because there can be violent clashes between the parties sometimes.

I can see you decided to approach "Old Town" from Jomo Kenyatta Avenue!! Why did you decide to cross over to the other side of the road at 3:43? You really did not get to walk inside "Mombasa Old Town" aka "Mji wa Kale" thoroughly enough to see the winding streets/roads similar to "West Bank"/"Jerusalem"! Your room was not far until you just decided to walk there at night.!
The Portuguese also brought African slaves to Goa, India. But they revolted and fled into the jungle interior of India and they can still be found in the State of Karnataka and they are known as the Siddi. They have lost their language and instead speak the language of Goa and the language of Karnataka. They are very happy in India. A Kenyan YTer traveled to meet with them and see if they wanted to return to Kenya or Africa and they had no interest in visiting Kenya. They said they were very happy in India which is very different from the way the African Americans feel about America.
The Arab Slave trade was much larger than the Transatlantic Slave trade and the big difference was that they castrated all the slaves they brought to the Middle East so they didn't mix with their blood. That is also why you don't find descendants of slaves in the Middle East. Most Americans do not know this basic history.
African Americans like Muhammad Ali converted to Islam saying it was their original religion. It was not. The Arabs converted the slaves they captured before selling them to the White ship captains who took them to the Americas. The Africans had their own religions.

Mombasa is mostly populated by mijikendas and arabs who are indigenous people there. The muslims that are captured in the video are called 'wagunya' and some 'mijikenda'.
There are no somalis captured, who are usually very dark and thin.

For the most part when I was going to a new city or country I don’t look at any photos or videos. I don’t care to have any expectations due to someone else’s experiences or something I found on Google. I’m going to El Salvador in about a week and I’ve done a little to no research on this country.
