    Great review. I've had this lens for about 18 months and it is one of my favorites. I use it for astro and it is great for that. I travel for most of my photography and really appreciate its compact size and light weight. In terms of a pairing, I would suggest the new Sony 20-70 f/4 G. It is also an amazingly sharp lens and I find it covers 90 percent of daylight situations. The added width (compared to a 24-70 or 28-75) is really useful. It is also quite light and good for travel. If I need more low light capability, I put on the 20mm f/1.8.

    Interesting analysis! I am wondering if you have a preferred crop or aspect ratio (2:1, or 8:5, etc ) when considering the end photo using a wide angle lens? I actually think this would be a good topic for an extended conversation as I have never seen much commentary on the subject.

    • @markwiemels
      @markwiemels  Рік тому +1

      I should think about that for sure, but I mostly just compose with the full filed of view, then crop in the edit, when I think it improves the image. I do shoot video, with the plan of using letter box to give a "fake anamorphic" look.

      It’s only really noticeable with a locked off shot, when you bring something within macro distance of the lens. I used the lens almost daily, for many months, before I even noticed any breathing and turned the breathing comp on. I wouldn’t even remotely consider it a deal breaker.

      When comparing an any 85mm lens to any 20mm lens, it’s really more about which focal length works for you, or your intended purpose. Both great lenses, but really different purposes, so I would focus more on that side of things, find your focal length. Just go on instagram and scan 20mm photos vs 85mm photos, see what look is what you want to achieve.

    Indeed the 20 1.8 is a terrific performer. I sold mine in favour of the 16-35 G + 24 1.4 GM because a) I prefer 24 as my go-to low-light & walkaround lens and b) the 16-35 covers any ultra-wide needs plus some pseudo-macro shots at the long end.
