+SlayerZaraki The anime/manga said many things many time. Yes, it has said that Toki has the most potential, but it also said Kenshiro has destined to un-parallel greatness -- including Kenshiro is the only one who can understand true sadness. Of course, also Raoh is the strongest of all....etc.
Chemicalkinetics There is a difference between a character making an assumption (like saying only Kenshiro can understand true sadness, which was later disproven once Raoh displayed the ability to understand it as well) and all of them unanimously agreeing, including Kenshiro, Raoh, *and* their teacher, that Toki had far more potential than any of them. 'Course, potential doesn't mean much when you get a dose of radiation from a nuke.
+SlayerZaraki "There is a difference between a character making an assumption" You mean like they all ASSUME that Toki has the greatest potential and then it turned out that is not the case? At the end of the anime, it was clear that Kenshiro has the greatest potential that Toki didn't even come close to. My point is that there are plenty contradicting statements in this manga/anime, and you cannot just focus on one or two statements. In the beginning, it is said that Nanto and Hokuto should never ever fight in any circumstance - an iron rule. Later, it was said that Nanto and Hokuto are destined to fight. Not only they can fight, but they MUST fight. At one point, Nanto and Hokuto fight styles are equally powerful. Later, it was clearly shown that Hokuto has already been more powerful than Nanto in thousands of years of history. Remember Souther said that he was sick and tired that Nanto successors live under the thumb of all other Hokuto successors? So what is true? In the first series, Raoh was portrayed as unemotional. By the second series, Raoh was said to be the embodiment of love. Kaioh blame Raoh was defeated by Kenshiro because Raoh has too much love. Lin then said that Raoh can defeat Kaioh because the love Raoh has. This is a manga/anime. The story is not written well ahead of time. Rather, the story is "written as it goes", which means that what is said in beginning may not be followed by the end.
Chemicalkinetics I'll give you that one. There are a lot of continuity errors that appear. However, Word of God has also held that Toki had by far the most potential out of all of them. It's even lampshaded in-universe near the end, when Kenshiro harkens back to Toki and mentions the difference between their potential. It should also be taken into account that we never got a glimpse of what Toki might actually have been capable of. He received a full dose of radiation from a nuke before the series had even kicked off. In essence, the Toki that we knew during the series was limited, though I will say it was a good thing he was. *If* his potential was what they hinted at, he'd have basically become a physical god. But, y'know, radiation poisoning.
He would have been like the 2nd person to attain Musou Tensei... Instead, it was the other two. (Sort of makes you wonder how he didn't understand sadness though...)
kelmorian178 No he didn't, he saved him because he saw a potential in him that he couldn't let anyone take away from him. He is the Star of benevolence, his destiny is to look over those who have a bright future in sight. Kenshiro's spirit awakened this destiny within him. Toki only wanted to step in because he shared a similar sentiment and also because they are brothers. Raoh brought him to this tournament specifically because he kept hearing that Ken was special and was destined to become the strongest of Hokuto Shinken. He and Toki brought him to the tournament to see exactly how powerful he was and if that superstition held true. In the end, it is by seeing Shuu outright blinding himself to save him that Toki and Raoh became convinced that he would probably end up being successor of Hokuto Shinken. Toki and Raoh weren't even interested in the succession anyways as Raoh simply wanted to fullfill his ambition trough power and Toki simply wanted to use Hokuto Shinken knowledge for medical purpose.
