BACKGROUND
Countdown is the channel’s longest running show and the first show ever broadcast on Channel 4 when it launched 40 years ago, in November 1982. The original version of Channel 4's Countdown is the French television programme « Des chiffres et des lettres » (literally "numbers and letters"), where the Numbers Round is referred to as « Le compte est bon » ("the total is right"). The show debuted in 1965 as « Le mot le plus long » using letters only, and reached its present format in 1972. This year marks the shows 51st anniversary.

SPIN-OFF
"8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown" is hosted by Jimmy Carr, with Rachel Riley and Susie Dent assuming their Countdown roles. The formation of the crossover with "8 Out if 10 Cats" began as a series of specials, the first of which was broadcast on 2 January 2012, when Channel 4 orchestrated a special "mash-up night", merging two shows to form a special edition of the pair, as part of its 30th-anniversary celebrations eleven years ago.

I never thought for one second I would find a video of myself from Countdown on another UA-cam channel! That's amazing!
Bjoern is very good to us.
Did anyone do this for 323?
9-6=3*(100+8)=324 then take away the 1.
Nearly. I saw 324 is 36 nines then I saw that 108/3 makes the 36. So I did: 9*(100+8)/(9-6) then take 1. But that is actually your solution with a 9/3=3 in for good measure 😅
That was my solution as well. I was really confused when the participant started with 9x8 😅
That's how I got it and surprised Lee missed it as it was the same methodology he used in the previous numbers round.
@@egbront1506he probably had it as well and just went with the fancy route. Or he saw his one and got "stuck".
Exactly!
Quite interesting in the 3rd round that Lee did (105*9)-4. I had the same steps to make the 5 and 4, but applied them the other way round so had (104*9)+5
Rachel's solution to 790 is bloody genius
Yes. I'm not sure if Rachel is doing something very clever, or is going through the same trial and error process as me, only a lot faster, or if it is her mathematical intuition and the right answer jumps out at her, in the same way some people see anagrams immediately.
I think she looks at factors, and quite often I see blocks of multiples to add and subtract but I didn't get this one in the minute I paused it for. I did think the nearest factors would be 90 x 9 ish subtract something, so tried 3 x 3 x (100 - n) but Rachel's was brilliant 👏
Rachel is as smart as she is gorgeous.
@@ramruma6330 yep - it's knowing the basics that add to the bigger solutions. Like if 15 x 6 is 90 thus 50 ,3, 6 comes up for 900 and 954 adding an extra 9 to 150 - I don't get out ever lol
I think she has someone in her ear. She doesn't seem confident and normally she's a lot more proud.
I don't watch often, but that's the first time I've heard 8 out of ten cats referenced on regular countdown
Yes it’s the first time I’ve heard them reference 50 shades of Grey as well.
A call back to the early days with Carol Vorderman when Lee specified which row his small numbers should come from.
Great to see both contestants applauding each other
When it comes right down to it they know they are going against the numbers and letters, not each other.
In the finals they even mention how they keep in touch online
Rachel is rocking the new Jon Richardson fashion line......
Who wears it better 🤔 😉?
Looks like a Jon Richardson groupie 🤣
@@crystalaustralia l`ll grant you that one :-)

Daytime Countdown wardrobe is just slightly different than Cats Countdown
@@untexan But Rachel often wears eye catching outfits on normal Countdown. Just saying that this episode she's inexplicably wearing something my Gran would put on to take the milk off the doorstep....:-)
In the first numbers round, I saw Rachel's solution but couldn't find any alternatives.
In the second numbers round, I saw the contestants' solutions, of course, but for the sake of doing something different I also had these:
50 - 6 = 44
44 x 7 = 308
6 / 3 = 2
308 - 2 = 306
50 - 4 - 3 = 43
43 x 7 = 301
6 - 1 = 5
301 + 5 = 306
50 + 1 = 51
51 / 3 = 17
7 - 4 = 3
17 x 6 x 3 = 306
The last is redundant, but it does have the advantage of bringing out the factors clearly.
In the third numbers round, I saw Lee's solution and also had these:
100 / 2 = 50
8 + 8 + 3 = 19
50 x 19 = 950
950 - 9 = 941
9 x 2 = 18
100 + 18 = 118
118 x 8 = 944
944 - 3 = 941
100 + 9 + 8 = 117
117 x 8 = 936
936 + 3 + 2 = 941
In the final numbers round, I saw Stuart's solution, but I was expecting him to do this:
100 + 8 = 108
9 - 6 = 3
108 x 3 = 324
324 - 1 = 323
Or another more intuitive solution is:
8 x 6 = 48
48 - 1 = 47
47 x 9 = 423
423 - 100 = 323
The way he did it was the last way I expected anybody to get it.
For 323: 8*6-1=47, multiply by 9 for 423, subtract 100.
That's what I did as well
8÷2=4
100+4=104
104×9=936
8-3= 5
136+5= 941
9/3=3
100+8=108
108×3=324
324-1=323

'The numbers are my friends.' - Rachel Riley
108 times 50 is 5,400.
106 x 53
for 306 it was incredibly easy: 50 x 6 = 300, and 7 - 1 = 6. Bingo!
Even easier : 50 + 1 = 51 * 6 = 306
(9-6)×(100+8)-1=323
100 + 8 = 108 x (9+9) (108x18) = 1944 / 6 = 324 - 1 = 323
3 times 3 times 6 times 2 is 108.
love your posts 🤣
941=9×(100+8/2)+8-3
2 x 9 = 18 + 100 = 118 x 8 = 944 - 3 = 941
1 from the top and 5 small numbers.
With the odd comments you are posting I have to wonder are you an alien or an AI bot trying to figure out how to fake human sentience.
I thought the second teaser could have been ENTITLER.
How was she able te get the first one? I know she’s really good at this but still. Is it just a lot of practice to become good at this stuff?
306 absolute doddle

Since when is "lettrine" an English word?
Brits get all possessive about the language but the reason the OED is the largest dictionary of any language is because it's just been stolen from Latin, Gaelic, French, German, Spanish... etc etc etc
