Pivotal Masses that’s debatable, but even then it (and Pasttime Paradise) shouldn’t be on this list, because the Bassline itself comes from a different genre
Pivotal Masses it was actually not a sample he was allowed to use. There was a whole court case about that because he ripped it off and sold it as his own creation even though he stole it from Queen. There’s a video on UA-cam where Vanilla Ice actually tries to explain that it’s not the same and fails miserably, it’s quite funny.
Everytime I hear that Coolio song intro all I think is.."as I walk through the valley where I harvest my grain I take a look at my wife and realize she's very plain".

To everyone who points out the Queen v Vanilla Ice thing, I'm sure he's aware. It was subtle, but he looked really bored when he played it, like... like he was annoyed. Like, "C'mon, really?" I have a feeling he portrayed that intentionally to reveal how he feels about the whole situation. That's theoretical, but it's possible.
Why are people only complaining about the Vanilla Ice/Queen bassline? I mean, there are also other sampled basslines on the list. Gangsta's Paradise and Rapper's Delight both use samples. Walk This Way was originally Aerosmith's own song (1975) but they made a rap version of it in the 1980s. And of course he was aware of this. If you know anything about hip hop, you know that they use lots of samples in the music.
MaggaraMarine It's just people trying to feel like they know something others do not, which is hilarious because everyone knows it was ganked from Queen. Like it or not, and personally I think it's not an all too interesting bassline, sticking it into a different genre with different context, breaths unique life into it.
Gangsta's Paradise should absolutely be two slots worth of bassline. I LOVE this. It'd be cool to have the drum beats under the base lines too. Best Rap Rhythym Sections.

I would not in a million years dare to call this a history of rap by bassline, however brief or subjective that history might be. I mean, Vanilla Ice, Drake, Kriss Kross and Weird Al Yankovic?? Come on. Pop radio stuff. He's a good bass player though.
Fantastic job, Rob! The Roots has a lots of awesome bass lines, 2Pac too. Few of them for example: The Roots - The Next Movement The Roots - The Spark 2Pac - Who do you believe in (sample Jamiroquai - Manifest Destiny) 2 Pac - Do for love
Manuel Eduardo You have a comprehension problem, I stated "never trust a bass player who uses a pick" I didn't say "never use a pick.." You're catching feelings because you probably use a pick. Let's keep it real. Majority of bass players who use picks, are not doing it for a different sound, they're using a pick because they haven't mastered finger style yet. Go feed those excuses to billy sheenan and stanley clarke.
Ousmane Ag Never used a pick actually, never had to purchase one because I play jazz bass instead of precision, you assume way too much lol. Also, you have a comprehension problem, because you picked up my tone as moody, when I was just making a statement. Simmer down, kiddo.

The tritone in Deep Cover is what gives all the feeling to the song. Would be a totally different story if they went with the obvious flat 5th.
flat (or diminished) 5th is a tritone. You mean "perfect 5th"
That was sick though I can’t deny - I was reaally missing Rakim’s Paid In Full
That bassline from Rapper's Delight sounds a lot like Chic's Good Times.
They're nearly the exact same, I can almost play them both, they just confuse me a bit at the end

Billy Stark Didn't Bernard Edwards write the bassline?
