It's nice to hear Dave's isolated tracks. He's such a good singer. A great combination of bombastic yelling and beatlesque clean-singing. The way Ken compares his version to Dave is a bit difficult to watch but the power-metal-vocals version is entertaining. It made me smile!

Ken I'm really digging the Isolated Vocals series, especially the longer ones where you really get in depth. I am here for all the times you stop the song and talk, if I wanted to just listen to the song with no commentary I wouldn't be here on youtube. Thanks for sharing your knowledge of the art and industry with us! Your version kicked ass.

I still remember when he broke his leg, got it worked on and continued the show. THAT is inspiring!
I read he was really depressed after Kurt died and felt he had to keep going. It was cathartic to make music, but as also tough. I could understand that....❤️

So many aha moments in this one Ken, - - when you said about the orchestral element to the first couple of lines,
    - and then when you mentioned the Beatles vibe later on.
    - And writing like a drummer, that makes so much sense listening to it with more attention.

In my imagination, I always feel like these growlers that have played for as long as he has must seek a vocal consultant from time to time. I especially feel that way when I hear a standout vocal like this one that diverges strongly from his previous tunes. It could be a natural progression, but I just feel like a teacher was present between records. And that doesn’t mean he didn’t work hard. I think on the contrary he put the time in to create something newer fresher better. But that’s just my imagination.

No hate here, but Dave had been playing guitar and bass for a long time before going solo. I think the story was that he made his own songs as a kid using an 8 track. That’s how he did almost all of the tracking for the Foos second album. Love this vid tho. Good job man

The pretender? Wow! One of my favorite songs covered by sir Ken. Great distortion and great attitude from Dave Grohl and a great song. From an influential drummer to an influential singer/songwriter. For me, i started as a bass player then a member of the choral group then a guitarist then back to solo singing. BTW, great vocal production sir Ken, you made it heavier than the original, and love the sound. The best part is the On-the-spot vocal recording and production. Thanks sir Ken for sharing bits of priceless information.

I saw FF open for RHCP in Baltimore and they stole they show hands down.....Dave is one of the best showman ever. When I saw them again years later in Philly he asked the crowd is we wanted them to play for 4 hours that night....... AND THEY DID! They went on at 7 and didn't get off stage until a little after 11! Talk about an awesome show!!!! Also, Taylor Hawkins is one of the most underrated drummers, talk about big shoes to fill! But he compliments Dave and the band perfectly!

Interesting fact: When he sings live, Dave always does the chorus an octave lower. I couldn't find one live video where he sings the high notes during the chorus. Taylor does the upper octave in live performances. That G# is not that difficult to reach, but it's a bitch to sustain.

This was very interesting. Especially Dave's pure sound. I'm not a native speaker, please consider this with this post. Dave's vocals have a melt even when he is singing distorted and high. Your voice is really good but is a bit harsh. And doubling your voice doesn't bring the sound of Dave.
Indeed I was trying to check out whether the high note in the chorus is sung by Dave. I only know the final mix and I assume that the high pitch in the chorus is sung Taylor Hawkins. That's the reason I'm here.
But your video was very interesting. Thank you. :)

Ken love this video break down! I’m 52 and picked up the guitar 5 years ago after watching a video of Dave explaining his approach to guitar playing as a drummer. I’m self taught as well. I had been a drummer since the age of 15 but wanted to write my own tunes. So far 5 songs under my belt. However I love singers like Dave, Daughtry, Johnny Rzeznik, Rob Thomas, Kroeger and my favorite Doug Pinnick! 🤘🏽 however my question is why do I feel I sound so bad when I record myself. Btw I’m the one trying to find pitch😩 😂 seems every time I record myself I can’t get passed the way I sound... off key and monotone. I know keep practicing. 😬 Last note maybe a kingsx vox breakdown would be cool. Ty and Jerry are also good singers and their harmonies are sick! IMO. Thank you as always! Good mix by way.👏🏻

I love how you get excited about music, Ken! And thank you for the knowledge. During last month I learned more about recording process than I did in years actually being recorded 😸
But what I'd like to point out is that nowadays technical possibilities are HUGE and it became a trap for modern musicians. They sound so perfect in recording that often, when you hear them live, it's quite disappointing. As our band prepares to do new recording in a month, I really wish to keep that balance, not to sound overproduced and yet being able to qualify for radio stations. Are there any possibilities to have that balance, really?

I personally find Ken's covers to be better then the originals most of the times and I think deep down Ken thinks so too:)) of course he has to keep saying that he is no Dave Grohl but what he just did four times in a row, just sitting in a chair, being over fifty, with no vocal issues...simply superior. Not to mention the knowledge of all the effects... Nobody on youtube gets even close

Hey Ken, when you doubled the track a bunch of times I do feel it lost some impact because the reverb built up in the mix making it sound further away. Definitely a cool affect and maybe it’s because I’m so used to the original, just want to know your thoughts on that?

    Hellooo
I reallyyy want to become a musician and I know how to play the piano, violin, and some acoustic guitar but I have no idea how to actually sing. I only have basics down.
Basically what my question is is what exercises would you recommend I start practicing to start improving my voice so I can start recording my music.
