It's nice to hear Dave's isolated tracks. He's such a good singer. A great combination of bombastic yelling and beatlesque clean-singing. The way Ken compares his version to Dave is a bit difficult to watch but the power-metal-vocals version is entertaining. It made me smile!
Ken I'm really digging the Isolated Vocals series, especially the longer ones where you really get in depth. I am here for all the times you stop the song and talk, if I wanted to just listen to the song with no commentary I wouldn't be here on youtube. Thanks for sharing your knowledge of the art and industry with us! Your version kicked ass.
So I basicaly just sing in my church choir but I watched this entire video like I'm ever going to be in a recording studio. It's neat seeing how all these songs come together! And who doesn't love Dave Grohl?

Finally! An isolated vocal video on one of my favorite artists. Dave Grohl is one of my personal heroes and I am always amazed by how talented he is. Awesome video Ken!
So many aha moments in this one Ken, - - when you said about the orchestral element to the first couple of lines, - and then when you mentioned the Beatles vibe later on. - And writing like a drummer, that makes so much sense listening to it with more attention.
In my imagination, I always feel like these growlers that have played for as long as he has must seek a vocal consultant from time to time. I especially feel that way when I hear a standout vocal like this one that diverges strongly from his previous tunes. It could be a natural progression, but I just feel like a teacher was present between records. And that doesn’t mean he didn’t work hard. I think on the contrary he put the time in to create something newer fresher better. But that’s just my imagination.
No hate here, but Dave had been playing guitar and bass for a long time before going solo. I think the story was that he made his own songs as a kid using an 8 track. That’s how he did almost all of the tracking for the Foos second album. Love this vid tho. Good job man
Yes he created Pocketwatch under the name 'Late!' where he played all the instruments. I think it was while he was with Scream tho not long before nirvana. Could be wrong with that timeline. It's an awesome album tho.
The pretender? Wow! One of my favorite songs covered by sir Ken. Great distortion and great attitude from Dave Grohl and a great song. From an influential drummer to an influential singer/songwriter. For me, i started as a bass player then a member of the choral group then a guitarist then back to solo singing. BTW, great vocal production sir Ken, you made it heavier than the original, and love the sound. The best part is the On-the-spot vocal recording and production. Thanks sir Ken for sharing bits of priceless information.
Love the analysis! I just watched Rick Beato’s analysis of the song earlier, in his what makes this song great series, I love this song! Another great video Ken!
I saw FF open for RHCP in Baltimore and they stole they show hands down.....Dave is one of the best showman ever. When I saw them again years later in Philly he asked the crowd is we wanted them to play for 4 hours that night....... AND THEY DID! They went on at 7 and didn't get off stage until a little after 11! Talk about an awesome show!!!! Also, Taylor Hawkins is one of the most underrated drummers, talk about big shoes to fill! But he compliments Dave and the band perfectly!
As always so cool Ken, with both the way you explain the technical stuff and the nice way you enjoy doing these videos yourself. And also all of your stories, they are always so funny to hear about :)
cool video Ken! this series is so much fun to watch and listen to I don't want it to end.. the cheese you put on his track sounded good.. and yours too.
I’m so glad you’re as mesmerized by Dave as I am, he’s such an inspiration and such an amazing person! I’ve never met him and yet, he’s my favorite human being🤘🏻
WOOOO thank youuuuu , he might not be technically the greatest but I love Dave’s voice . We’re from similar areas (Delmarva) so i love hearing the accent come across a little in the singing .
Actually, I only knew Gabriela's version of this Dave Grohl song. And I found it brilliant even without knowing the original or your version. Now I've heard how your teaching allows to unlock the range of growling, without getting stuck, I've become a true believer - I already was a believer ;-) Thanks for that, and for the producer tips, too!
Interesting fact: When he sings live, Dave always does the chorus an octave lower. I couldn't find one live video where he sings the high notes during the chorus. Taylor does the upper octave in live performances. That G# is not that difficult to reach, but it's a bitch to sustain.
Love how the melody musically and the melody with the vocals are the same on different parts of the song. To be a fly in the wall during the writing. What came first on this? The vocal idea or the music?
The growl in his voice is definitely a characteristic to build up over time. Also, it's weird how the less you "think" about it, sometimes it comes out better. Got really close to really hurting myself when I was a teenager trying to get the grit, but you eventually find pockets that work well with your voice!
@@kentamplin Forgot to mention that the Foo Fighters were on Howard Stern the other day. Howard asked Dave who he wanted to induct them into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Dave said they hadn't talked about it, but eventually the band agreed that it would be Dave's mom. She is their greatest support and fan. Very cool!😎
Really enjoy the vid. Only issue is that KT seems to finish with a Hetfield sort of drop out, rather than sticking to the melody. Really changes the sound
Why does my throat hurt after watching you do those takes? Ha! 😉 I enjoyed seeing you do those quick studio takes. Good stuff! I saw you with Shout back in the late 80’s...You’re an awesome performer too!
This was very interesting. Especially Dave's pure sound. I'm not a native speaker, please consider this with this post. Dave's vocals have a melt even when he is singing distorted and high. Your voice is really good but is a bit harsh. And doubling your voice doesn't bring the sound of Dave. Indeed I was trying to check out whether the high note in the chorus is sung by Dave. I only know the final mix and I assume that the high pitch in the chorus is sung Taylor Hawkins. That's the reason I'm here. But your video was very interesting. Thank you. :)

I know keep practicing. 😬 Last note maybe a kingsx vox breakdown would be cool. Ty and Jerry are also good singers and their harmonies are sick! IMO. Thank you as always! Good mix by way.👏🏻
I love how you get excited about music, Ken! And thank you for the knowledge. I personally find Ken's covers to be better then the originals most of the times and I think deep down Ken thinks so too:)) of course he has to keep saying that he is no Dave Grohl but what he just did four times in a row, just sitting in a chair, being over fifty, with no vocal issues...simply superior.
