Here are some extra Long Island facts:
    1. I don't need you to worry for me 'cause I'm alright
    2. I don't want you to tell me it's time to come home
    3. I don't care what you say anymore, this is my life
    4. Go ahead with your own life, leave me alone
But seriously, thank you for having me along for the ride! It's an absolute honor to be a part of both this wonderful channel and the transit community in general!

Pro tip for Montauk Branch trips: Try to get a train that originates at Hunters Point Avenue (which is right next to the 7 Train station of the same name), the odds of getting a seat are much, much higher than at Jamaica. Source: Me, I took the local train all the way out to Montauk this way and it was an amazing 3+ hour ride.

They used to have complimentary bar service on the Cannonball as part of the Hamptons Reserve pre-pandemic but that hasn't returned. This was done to replace parlor cars on the Cannonball back in 2001. Montauk station is definitely a Metra Electric District ahh station! And yes, I called out Miles on not visiting the lighthouse during his Cheapest Way to Long Island video, but I know he'll change that soon enough with the East Hampton-Montauk on-demand service replacing the 10C!
Also for context, I said, "This one" and "Still tall" because I was mentioning how it isn't the tallest lighthouse in NY as the Fire Island Lighthouse is much taller at 168 feet (51 m). However that one is also much newer as the current Fire Island Lighthouse was completed in 1858 (to replace the original 74-foot tower from 1826).

When I was growing up in the 60s & 70s, I rode the Montauk line pretty regularly from Brooklyn to Amagansett, the next to last stop. It was a transition time for the LIRR and there was a large variety of equipment. The parlor cars were ex-Pullman heavyweights with the sections removed. The Cannonball was an all parlor train with an open platform observation car and ran up to 17 cars. In the late 60s, the LIRR bought long distance cars from several other railroads; Pennsylvania, Kansas City Southern, New Haven, B&O and NY Central to name a few. It was like a preview of Amtrak's "rainbow" era before they were repainted in MTA grey & blue. The heavyweight parlors were replaced by sleepers with the rooms intact. There were also a bar cars for coach passengers in ex-Boston & Maine "American Flyer" cars.

@@saulschlapik6818 I remember that, since I lived closer to the main line, and saw a lot of cars (and even locomotives) owned by other railroads. I also remember how much it bothered me that the LIRR had so little of their own equipment. Looking back now, I should've learned to appreciate all the equipment from other railroads.

@@saulschlapik6818 FYI, two other "foreign power" railroads used by the LIRR that I remember were Providence & Worcester and Bangor & Aroostook. I'm surprised those two still have such a major presence in New England, let alone the rest of the country.

I very much enjoyed this video. Two things I would like to add:
    1) Your train coming back was powered by a 500-numbered DM30AC. That's DM for dual-mode, which means it can run on both diesel-electric power and is also equipped with third rail shoes to run solely on electricity.
    2) They would love to add more trains but (a) they don't have the equipment or manpower for it, (b) they don't have the track space (but they're working on it! The Main Line now has at least three tracks as far as Hicksville!), and (c) in the summer it's an exaggerated demand (every eastbound Montauk train is packed Thursday-Saturday except late night; if they got more equipment or manpower to meet that demand, it would be sitting around in the off-season).
I would like it if you and maybe Miles In Transit came back here at some point and took the train from Penn Station to Ronkonkoma and counted how many times it said Ronkonkoma. I occasionally work at a bar in Bethpage and I am "Ronkonkoma'd out" by the time I get to that station.

I thought for sure that the ACE and Antelope Valley lines would be longer, extending as they do beyond the metro areas they purport to serve, but no. Montauk truly reigns supreme.

LIRR used to have parlor and bar cars in the old diesel fleet. They had to go because of their age. But by getting rid of them, they also solved the problem of where to store them during the week and winter.
If you want to increase service on the line, they need to expand double-tracking and increase the fleet. Electrifying the Central Branch could send express electric trains to Babylon. The LIRR made the decision to electrify the Main Line to Ronkonkoma to capture commuters from the north and south shores. Any electrification past Babylon will be met with challenges to electrify the Port Jeff past Huntington, which has been promised for over 50 years and not delivered.

I've known how to pronounce the word "Patchogue" since I was a little kid, especially due to the fact that Patchogue is south of Medford.
I'm an obvious Long Islander, and my February 2024 visit to Folkston, Georgia is a clear indication of this.

Maybe they should be like GO Transit, which runs many of its Niagara Falls trains with standard bilevels (dedicated to bikes on lower level), but arranges the trains typically with 10-12 bilevels.

I'd like to see some more C3's added with bike racks on lower levels not only on the LIRR but on Metro-North. The trouble with the latter is, I don't think there are too many places on Metro-North where they can run C3's with or without areas reserved for bikes.

BEING RIGHT FEELS SO GOOD! But seriously, this was a fun watch. I rode the Montauk branch last year for a short vacation, and I totally agree that it should have better service. I didn't know how walkable Patchogue was, it was a pleasant surprise!

Just for the record, during Fridays there’s a direct train from Penn Station to Montauk. It leaves Penn at 4:07 PM and operates nonstop from Penn to Westhampton. And during the summer, they charge a premium fare and have reserved seating for some of the cars for that train. It’s known as the Hamptons Reserve.

A funny thing that happened to me once. I was getting on the Hempstead branch to go home at Jamaica, the Montauk train was suppose to follow it. But people didn’t realize that… so lots of the Montauk crowd got on the Hempstead train thinking it was the train to WestHampton and I was like uhhhh… because that line doesn’t run that often… they missed the one they were suppose to get… who knows how long the next one will be.

Thanks for this overview of a line I've only seen on maps and departure boards. From your experience I agree they could learn a few things from the Cape Flyer's passenger accomodations. Any chance of bumping up frequencies? I wonder if some of Amfleet's from the Empire Service pool could be used for this service, if they still have some life in them once my home corridor gets Airoed.
And I always thought it'd be neat to have a NYC-Buffalo-Toronto night train and extend that out to Montauk at least seasonally. I'd offer a late evening departure out Montauk and the Hamptons with a late morning arrival into Mountauk. Just a crazy thought though. The night train could also have some coach class cars with Amfleet I like seating for shorter-trips along the whole corridor of course.

Regarding Montauk Branch at Patchogue I-495 Exits 61-64 if you have a car you would simply drive up to Bellmore on the Babylon Branch or Ronkonkoma MacArthur Airport due to the electric M3 M7 and M9s stopping there. The latter has a sporadic schedule which is why they drive to the Babylon Branch due to it's better schedule

wow it seems like that experience in the vestibule was pretty bad. I just wanted to throw it out there that if you go on the Cannonball (which runs Fridays to montauk and Sundays to NYC) it has a lot more cars so you have a better chance of getting a seat. Another tip in general is go for an end car because those are always less crowded.

The double-tracking ends just east of Sayville. Patchogue has a siding track but that's for the trains that terminate at Patchogue. I take the Montauk Branch regularly and I've waited at the part where the double-track ends at Sayville for the westbound train to pass.
