I used to pack away my off-season clothing at the start of summer and start of winter each year but dreaded the process itself (carrying heavy boxes up and down 2 flights of stairs, de-hangering and folding clothes, etc.) so I took a hard look at my wardrobe and purged those clothes I wasn’t wearing so that all of my clothes now fit in my closet. I love not having to go through the switchover twice a year.

I have decided that there's only so much decluttering I can do with clothes, because as you said, I like what I have. What I can do however, is when something reaches the end of its life, it doesn't have to be replaced. This will over time reduce the amount. As long as everything fits into drawers and my closet, I believe this is an acceptable method of getting over "too much stuff". It won't be instant, but it will get done

Thank you for so much common sense decluttering. The move towards extreme decluttering is not necessarily the best thing. Love your balanced approach.

I appreciate your approach to decluttering and the way in which you present it. Clutter transcends minimalism to maximalism and everything in between. You skillfully point out that fact when you anticipate negative comments. The whole point is that your advice can be used by everyone no matter what their style is. Thank you, I enjoy watching your blogs.

My biggest thing that I got from you is the valuable real estate comment. Finally figured it out that I don’t use some items enough to give them the valuable real estate. Thank you

I have gained about 20 lbs back after a 96 lb weight loss. I put away clothes that no longer fit in hopes of fitting into them again. After 5 weeks of strict dieting and exercising, I made little headway and actually hurt myself in strenuous exercising, my doctor told me to stop. Heal, enjoy my life…my weight was fine. All those clothes are hitting the donation bag today. That is going to be a nagging bit of clutter and stress that will alleviate much of my stress. Now I am looking forward to buying new jeans. 😊😊😊 in my current season of life.

I also like Dana K White’s idea of finishing projects as a method of decluttering. Fixing something so it can be used again, hanging up those photos, or FINALLY finishing that craft project not only uses those project-specific items but also frees up the mental space where that project has been sitting. 😊

I love this advice! Sometimes we just need to look at our stuff and renew our intent to use our items rather than buy more. Sometimes when I want to buy something, just looking through what I already have discourages that "Buy" desire.

I also live in four seasons. I do organize by season. Top rod is the opposite season of weather I am currently in. Good video. Many new ideas!! I finally moved things I use for holiday cooking in a box in my basement. Freed up space for my daily needs.

We renovated our kitchen in 2022. Before the demolition, i decluttered everything as I moved into our temporary kitchen. Then, when the reno was finished, i decluttered a second time and only put the frequently used items back. The massive roaster gets used occasionally so it's in the basement. Food prep is soooo much easier now.
I am really careful about replacement items. I haven't replaced our veggie steamer or bread machine. I loved my bread machine for pizza dough and bread however i found my stand mixer is better for dough and i have a delicious knead bread recipe. Win win!
    Thanks for all your info.

Something being in the wrong place. This is so important in my house because if things aren't seen they don't get used.

You have to decide if your level of overwhelm is ready to hear this or if it will just encourage you to continue doing the things that got you in the mess your in today.

No dictionary covers the full scope of the definition of clutter and, like you said, it's different for each individual person. For example, we keep our vacuum cleaner in plain sight in the living room because we don't have a broom closet or anywhere else to hide it away. To some, that would give the room a cluttered look but it follows your step of keeping things where you'll be most likely to use them. Obviously, we need and use it so it's not clutter in that sense of the word.

For sure - not clutter if it works for you! ☺

I,too, have a bread machine. It sits in a closet because I can't find the mixes specifically for it. Online they want $15 a box. No thanks. I'm not a baker or cook for that matter so I don't know how to make bread. How do you make your bread? I'd love to use mine again or I'll just give it away. Great suggestions, too. Thanks!

I have the BEST bread recipes! I never use the boxed ones ☺ I just made ciabatta rolls yesterday. Here is a basic bread recipe that is awesome: add of these ingredients to the machine and it makes a 2 pound loaf: 1 cup warm water, 1/4 cup of milk (I use 2% but any will do), 2 and 1/4 teaspoons instant yeast ( or 1 standard packet), 2 Tablespoons of sugar, 4 Tablespoons of olive oil, 1/2 teaspoon of salt and 3 and 1/3 cups of all-purpose flour or bread flour. If your bread machine doesn't have a bake setting you can bake it in the oven for 30 mins at 350. I store it in the fridge or freezer if we don't eat it within 2 days. Also, I use all recipes in my machine (whether they are specifically for bread machines or not and I have never had a problem)!

I used to keep things based on if they looked ok and worked, without thinking about how many it actually made sense to have. I just lived with the reality of cramming them in to fit, which is not easy. Or necessary. I realized this one day when I watched a woman declutter her child's clothes, but still ended up with numerous tall stacks of folded clothes and realized she had still kept enough for the child to wear for months and how she would have to put it all away, would likely end up with clothes on the floor and huge laundry days, and the child would likely outgrow the clothes before wearing many of them. And I thought why is she keeping so much? And then I looked at my stuffed closet. ...and the ridiculous mugs crowding my kitchen and the extra and numerous unused bedding items crammed in closets...and finally applied logic.
