After LOST's STELLAR first season, the show went into a state of limbo- the network wanted it to go forever, but the writers wanted a plan to END the show. In this video, we take a deep dive into LOST's second and third seasons, to look at the time when LOST became TV's "greatest mess." Welcome to the second part of the LOST retrospective.

I used to go to the "crash site" with my dad in Hawaii. They just had the full (half) airplane on the beach and taped it off from people but my dad had been going fishing there for at least 30 years so we just kind of hung out there on Saturdays. My dad passed away 3 years ago this week, and we released his ashes into the ocean right where that plane was. Whenever I see the pilot episode I think of him, thank you for this video. Peace ✌️

The Dostoyevsky book that Locke gives to the guy locked in the armory is “The Brothers Karamazov” and one of the central themes and conflicts of the book is that of faith and belief. @@nickryan4126 Yeah I realized after I made the comment that it did eventually, but what I mean is that by that point it seems like it had already been stretched to the point where it was something people couldn't relate to anymore. It seems like what they wanted was a three-season show, and what the writers could easily scale to was a three-season show, and then after three seasons the network was like "fine it can end in three more seasons instead of nine more seasons, see we can compromise."

Charlie is definitely still using Heroin, he is a full addict, who is fighting his addiction. And stashing drugs is not empowering, no counselor would advice you this. Thats why alcoholics always have alcohol at home, and it would be a worst case scenario if a recovering alcoholic would still stash alcohol at home.

My own thinking is that Walt was supposed to be the vehicle for all the weird psychic stuff on the island (duh) and Eko was introduced to take his place. When Eko decided to leave, most of that was dumped on Hurley which, while great for his character, is still immensely frustrating given how intensely Eko had been developed, and how abruptly he was abandoned. As you said basically.

Seanie B did a video about the show over a year ago that was also really great and got me to change my perspective on the show as well. I was pretty dismissive of Lost because having watched it when it aired with my uncle we were both pissed after the final episode. I really don't know what we were expecting but we were swept up in the hype of it all, ya know? So for years I would recommend watching Lost but only if they wouldn't mind mysteries that never get solved and a lackluster ending. I was pretty cynical about it almost to a comical extent. But, watching Seanie B come back from the fucking dead seemingly (he was a big figure in the community making videos about the show back then) and present such a friendly take on the show really helped me remember it in a new, more positive light. The video is just around an hour and highly recommended it you want even more Lost content!

I just finished up re-watching the entire series a third time and picked up a whole lot I didn't get during the first two re-watches. I actually watched it to analyze it this time. The episode where Locke's father suddenly appears on the island and insinuates it's hell... the one where Richard's security question is "What is this island..." the other one where Richard arrives on the island and they all scream "The island is guarded by the devil." There were 48 total writing credits on Lost. It was not written from beginning to finish by the creators or even the two main writers.
It's very obvious that no matter what the creators intended, there is a very strong implication that the island is hell... or heaven... depending on how far along the journey you are. You could still twist that into 'hell is a place on earth," but with titles like "This place is death..." and the fact that some of the writers were reading the Tibetan book of the dead - where you have to realize you're dead before you are - yeah, at least some of the writers completely did not see the island the way the creators did. They took it where maybe the creators were trying to go away from. The show always had a strong push-pull element in terms of what was really going on. Even Josh Holloway refused to believe that the island wasn't some type of purgatory. Maybe they took it too far in that direction to keep people watching, not sure, but they did it so much that no rational watcher could escape that it's possible they were all in a "next life" on the island. Desmond's "See you in the next life..." time travel, etc. Whether they meant to or not, it's an obvious form of the afterlife. There's even an episode called "It flashes before your eyes..." The show is clearly about life or death, and with the "magical" properties they gave the island, you could construe it as either one of those things the whole series through.
Sorry, this show fascinates me. But what fascinates me most is that the creators refuse to admit it was a form of the afterlife. Maybe their writers slipped one by them. Whether they like it or not, some of them steered the story there and left clues far too glaring to take it back.

The reoccurring mention of how shows aren't meant to go on forever, despite what TV networks want, got me thinking about how Dr Who really got an airtight premise: Adventures of a reincarnating space-time traveler, that allows it to go on theoretically forever. Whoever pitched that pilot did every future writer for the show a massive favor.
    ...
Similarly, (and bear with me here) Jojo's bizarre adventure sealed itself as when the main character's main story was over, it shifts to following the descendants of the main characters, again, allowing it to theoretically go on forever.

Basically, it was a desperate fluke and now it's the longest-running sci-fi show of all time, and it's probably going to continue until the end of time seeing as not even Chibnall could kill it. Doctor Who works because the actors know stories can'tbe eternal. Mainly because tv was in its infancy and most of them had as much of more theatre experience. Poor Bill Hartnell was fired by a shitty showrunner but from Thoughton on all actors decided they only wanted to be on for 3-4 years. So the story basically resets every 4 years.

Now that is a displaced focus and has nothing to do with Jack's journey. In a proper context you have a renown surgeon involved with two murders that's called a triangle? Haha, Jack is controlling vs two murderers. Cra, cra fixation. What a lame empty vessel and a distraction to a rather good series.

I was so obsessed with this show. It was before the internet for me. One year during the season finale we had a local tornado storm where our local news played tornado warnings over the show. I actually called the station and screamed at them. People could have been dying or losing their homes and all I cared about was lost.

Billiam has become one of my favorite UA-cam channels, and this massive undertaking has proved that he has the chops to be a fantastic content creator. Who TF else would make a six and a half hour video so that the rest of us GenZs could understand a TV series that came out while we were little kids. Absolute legend.

As a millenial who’s late childhood was shaped by this show I would love for gen z to start watching it. It was a product of its culture at the time but it is also so much more than that. Just a fantastic story. And when it’s all over I highly urge using Lostpedia to look up any lingering questions-almost if not everything has some sort of explanation I promise!

These videos are iconic and perfectly encapsulate all my feelings towards Lost. People love to knock it for the ending, but completely forget how much of an impact it had on tv and how it really paved the way for big stories on the "small" screen.

That part at just less than ten minutes in where you start demonstrating the real life parallels and what the writers were creating is honestly so so fantastic. I love ur shit bro. Cant wait to watch the rest of this.

Well it took about 5 days of watching off and on but I finally finished part 1 and 2 of these videos! I must say... I thought my husband was a big Lost fan because he talks about it even now many years later about how it's one of his favorite shows... but dude I think you might be one of the biggest Lost fans I have EVER seen! You did a great job with this series and I think you captured the whole feel of the series.
Also *SPOILER* Charlie dying is one of the hardest things I went through as a kid! He was my absolute favorite character from season 1 and when he found those Mary statues I actually cried because I was so afraid he would fall back to his old ways. When he died I had to turn off that episode and finish it later because I was so upset back in the day. Wish he could have lived on with Clair and the baby :(

Fun story: After watching your first video and remembering what made me love Lost so much back when it aired, I ordered the first season DVD set off eBay. Well, weeks later and I realize it got... wait for it... *lost* in the mail. Of all the things, right? I don't know if that's irony or what, but it's somewhere in the ballpark.
