I absolutely loved this film as kid. It's sad that most people don't even know what it is when you talk about it though. It's a really underrated gem, in my opinion.
I always felt like The Faculty was criminally underrated. This should of been a break out movie for all those stars. And you're right, Hollywood is scared to take risk like they did in the 80's/90's. Now we live in the perpetual land of remakes, reboots, and franchises.
@Barnaby Wentworth What's funny? The 90's was home to some amazing films in my opinion: The Big Lebowski (1998), The Matrix (1999), Fight Club (1999), Scream (1996), Goodfellas (1990), Boogie Nights (1997). And those are only a few. All great, stand alone, ORIGINAL films.
The Faculty and it’s soundtrack came in just as I was entering high school, it embodied all of my anxieties about it. After seeing what high school was actually like, I would’ve preferred the killer alien brain slugs.
When I watched it as a middle schooler, I remember saying "This is Animorphs! Those are exactly like the Yeerks from Animorphs!" And all my friends cringed.
My university thesis was about high school representations in 90s films. The Faculty featured heavily so I watched it many, many times. Ha, good times. Seriously underrated little flick.
theater seats being filled isnt a good measure of a films quality. life goes on and sometimes people didn't even know a movie was out. this is one of my favorite flicks
The Faculty is such an underrated Film. My friends & I at the time felt like we were the only ones who loved it and it could have started a whole new sub-genre by being the first hard Sci-fi/Horror/Teen-Slasher
This movie was a hit though when it originally came out. It had a budget of 15 million and made over 40 million and that's just in the US. We are not talking Avengers money but still it made its money back.
I saw this in theaters as well, but my screening was more half filled or so. Not like Scream and Scream 2 which were sold out when I saw them. I agree it’s one of his best for sure. May be my personal fave.
It's neat how Robert Patrick seems to be typecast as the Villain in nearly every project he does, from "Judgement Day", to "The Faculty." "Bridge to Terabithia" seems to be his lone exception.
I think it's because he works as a good "surprise" villain. He's at first glance a very unthreatening person, but still has a sense of danger about him.
Yeah I do remember this movie. Yeah but Scream sort of sucked all the oxygen out the room. But this was a good sci-fi horror movie all about these aquatic aliens.
Saw this one in a Sneak Preview - great experience and made me fall in love with the soundtrack. Class of 99 deserves recognition - frigging Tom morello playing Pink Floyd and so much more great originals and covers on the OST.
When "The Faculty" came out, we weren't going to see it. My sister went and saw it and said "you've got to see this". I went and it ended up being one of my favorite films to come out of the 90s. I LOVE this movie and yes, the marketing was bad. I didn't want to see it because it came off like a "Scream" and that's my favorite slasher film. I didn't want to see another rip off. This movie was one of the most unique teen horror films of it's time (maybe even ever) and it's a shame it didn't get it's roses.
The Faculty is an example of trying to make something popular for the sake of it being popular. If you focus solely on making something successful, you won’t have the creative touch it takes for it to be good
This was my go to horror movie as a kid I watched it whenever it wss on horror channle and I recorded it onto my grandas sky box for when I stayed there on weekends I would often fall alssep watching it

This movie was good, but SCREAM was lightening in a bottle that wasn't even captured in its subsequent sequels. I like SCREAM but am not a huge fan, but I see that the original was lightening in a bottle.
Scream 2 stayes true and was fine. Scream 3 sucked. Scream 4 was interesting from a modern point. None have tried to flip the script on the original tho. I hope 5 does that. Please let an MC/good guy be one of the ppl behind the mask.
@@The0Kiyubii0Kid I actually don't think any of the sequels were bad. The original was just, well very original and great. The sequels ranged from 'meh' to good in my opinion. I feel that their rankings are 1, 3 ,2, & 4. I hold the unpopular opinion where I felt that 3 was not a bad watch at all. Again, I am not a mega fan of the series, so I may take it a bit easier on these films.
@@DominickSpano I feel you need to rewatch 3. Its pretty corny. My personal order would be 1, 4 ,2, 3. A reason 3 sucks is Kevin Williamson did not write it and its pretty obvious.
@@The0Kiyubii0Kid I know for hardcore fans it was a little bit of the black sheep or off from the others. To me I just felt the final confirmation at the end was well done. I do think there was many holes in the script, and this coming from a not mega fan.

As soon as the video started i got **very** excited to watch a video about the Faculty. I loved this movie when it first came out! I should probably note that i ignored the thumbnail. I just read the title and the creator and clicked play
I really like the Faculty. One of those movies I've watched multiple times, but not for a few years now. I actually think the concept is perfect for a streaming show remake. It's the kind of plot that would benefit from the extended run time of a show. Netflix would do a good job with it I think, if it was more like Stranger Things in tone than their Scream remake. If they set it in the 90s that would be amazing, so that the ability for research and communication would be hampered by the lower access to technology... I remember watching the Faculty for the first time and thinking it should be more famous. Glad it's considered a cult classic now.
The thing is sometimes box office failure and even critical failure at the time of release, are a godsend for films like this. The Faculty is great still today, because it is the only one. There was no franchise. And that is actually a good thing.
I remember renting it when it first came out and I didn't like it, a few weeks ago I decided to watch it again and liking it. Now I realized why I didn't like it the first time and it was because I was expecting a Slasher style movie, that was my favorite genre of movies. Since that time I've been watching more Sci-fi movies and I think that's why I feel differently about the movie now.
I've wanted to see this movie and I'm not even into the horror genre. Not because I don't want to be scared, but I want to see some originality in them. Marketing is EVERYTHING and that APPLIES to everything. For instance, NBC barely advertised Manifest, a show I actually like, explaining why the ratings were average to low and they cancelled them because of it. But when it was added on Netflix, it was #1 on the most watched list for probably two and a half months, leading to them ordering another season of the show! Or how big another show I like You was when they added that show as part of their content and ordered another season after Lifetime cancelled it. But even before the renewal, so many people suddenly talked about it as if it's brand new and originated from Netflix even though it started on Lifetime.
I remember the sci-fi channel used to constantly play this movie in the early 2000’s. Great movie btw I always enjoyed watching it. Reminds me of me and my dad sitting down to watch it everytime it came on.
Loved this movie as a kid, probably still would enjoy it if I played it today. Josh Hartnett pulling the arm off the paper cutter is fuckin epic and classic
I didn't even know that, I thought it had scream vibes, especially near the end with the 'who's the queen" plotthread and the chase scenes. It totally made sense why.
This video completely gets this movie wrong and I'm surprised more people aren't speaking up about it It made 64 million not 40. The trailers clearly depicted the staff (faculty) as being body snatched. It had strong video sales as well as tv runs. It wasnt most of the cast's first features. It was never meant to be an ongoing series or franchise. Everything they say in this video is wrong.
Truly fun underrated film. Everything really comes together from this stellar cast, great soundtrack, witty writing, and capturing late 90s slasher era with scifi. The Faculty will always have a special place in my heart. This film rules.
No one I've ever talked to who grew up in that era like me says they hate this movie; obviously hindsight is 20/20 but I think if you re-release it now, it will do very well.
Another component to take into consideration is that the sci-fi horror subgenre was not particularly successful at the box office during the mid to late 90s. I can see a hesitation by the studio to show its hand as an alien film. But yes, The Faculty is a bizarre film but I’ve always thought that’s what made it special. I loved this film when it came out and still. I saw it in theaters!
Yeah from 1996 to 2003 there was a flood of Teen Horror movies after Scream’s success. Scream, Scream 2, I Know What You Did Last Summer, I still Know What You Did Last Summer, The Faculty, Halloween H20, Bride Of Chucky, Disturbing Behaviour, I’ve Been Waiting For You (TV movie), Urban Legend, The Clown At Midnight, Dead Man’s Curve, The Rage: Carrie 2, Kolobos, House On Haunted Hill (1999), Urban Legend 2: Final Cut, Final Destination, Scream 3, Cherry Falls, Ripper, Do You Wanna Know A Secret?, Jeepers Creepers, Final Stab, Joyride, Valentine, The Hole, Jason X, Wishcraft, Slash, Taboo, Halloween Resurrection, Final Destination 2, Freddy Vs Jason, Jeepers Creepers 2. And most of the actors who were staring in these movies were big and young upcoming stars from Neve Campbell, Skeet Ulrich, Mathew Lillard, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Sarah Chalke, Rebecca Gayheart, Alicia Witt, Tara Reid, David Arquette, Joshua Jackson, Seann William Scott, Anthony Anderson, Jennifer Morrison, Nick Stahl, Jessica Cauffiel, Marley Shelton, Katherine Heigl, David Boreanaz, Josh Hartnett, Ryan Phillippe, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr, Kerr Smith, Devon Sawa, Ali Larter, AJ Cook, Alexandra Holden, Eddie Kaye Thomas, Mena Suvari, Rose McGowan, Jamie Kennedy, Drew Barrymore, Britney Murphy, Michael Weston, Katherine Isabelle, Chad Donella, Derek Hamilton, etc etc.
The thing about marketing reminded me of The Village, a SPECTACULAR drama that was murdered by its marketing. I saw it in cinemas and my friends hated it bc they were expecting a gore fest and not a nuanced tale of love and family with some maybe monsters
I remember some friends forcing me to go see this when we were in high school. At the time, we all hated it. I wasn’t a horror fan, and I didn’t understand what it was trying to do. You’re 100% right about the marketing of it. I don’t know what we expected, but none of us expected what it was, and everybody just felt confused by it (though it isn’t a confusing movie). However, I feel like I should revisit it now. I have a feeling that I would actually like it 22 years later because I have more context for it.
Classic movie IMO, also the best tv censor ever. Josh Harnett screamed fuck when Delia gets away and they changed it to fuey or something. I know no one cares but I found it funny lol.
I enjoy this movie immensely, love seeing a young Elijah Wood be pretty much the male equivalent of Sidney Prescott, and the practical creature effects towards the end look pretty neat. But I totally get the sci-fi Scream vibes.

The thing about marketing reminded me of The Village, a SPECTACULAR drama that was murdered by its marketing. I saw it in cinemas and my friends hated it bc they were expecting a gore fest and not a nuanced tale of love and family with some maybe monsters
I remember being really hyped for The Faculty... only for it to not come to my theater. But then really liking it when I rented it on VHS.
I saw this movie twice in theaters I loved it so much. It’s a real shame it didn’t blow up.
Classic movie IMO, also the best tv censor ever. Josh Harnett screamed fuck when Delia gets away and they changed it to fuey or something. I know no one cares but I found it funny lol.
They made something unique but tried to market it as something you've seen before.
I enjoy this movie immensely, love seeing a young Elijah Wood be pretty much the male equivalent of Sidney Prescott, and the practical creature effects towards the end look pretty neat.
But I totally get the sci-fi Scream vibes.
the faculty and ginger snaps somehow were weirdly relatable teen films for me
