  • The Dialect and Heritage Project is a collaborative project between the School of English at the University of Leeds, Leeds University Special Collections and five partner museums across the country, including the Weald and Downland Living Museum in Singleton, West Sussex.
Based on the material held in the Leeds Archive of Vernacular Culture, in particular the Survey of English Dialects, this project aims to celebrate dialect in all of its forms. The Survey of English Dialects was completed in the 1950s and 1960s by a team of researchers based at the University of Leeds. The team covered over 300 locations, asking over 1,300 questions. Of these 300 locations, three are in West Sussex: East Harting, Sutton and Warnham.
This talk by Amy Stone highlights some of the material held at the Leeds Archive of Vernacular Culture which relates to West Sussex as well as the work of the project to build a picture of our language landscape today.
