- Two awesome F-35B Lightnings at RAF Marham perform a take off called a 'Short Take Off'.
RAF Marham is the home of the F-35 Lightning a 5th Generation, multi-role, stealth fighter. Marham operates the B model F-35, which is a STOVL (Short Take Off Vertical Landing) aircraft. The RAF omit the 'II' because this is RAFs third Lightning!
The Lightning’s short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) capability allows it to operate from the new ‘Queen Elizabeth’-class aircraft carriers and the vessels of allied nations, as well as short airstrips. The F-35B lands vertically like a helicopter and can take off in very short distances, allowing it to operate from austere, short-field bases and a range of air-capable ships.
LOCKHEED MARTIN F-35B LIGHTNING SPECS:

The F-35 Is Underrated..
THE most awesome and phenomenal take off I ever saw at RAF Marham was in 1981 when a stripped down for overhaul Victor K2 tanker with a very light fuel load for the transit to St Athan made its departure. The pilot lined up as close to the edge of the concrete as he could with a head wind of 25 knots going over the wings before he even released the brakes. The local controller commented “ this is going to be good” and he wasn’t wrong. The pilot called for “take off” and we throttled the four Rolls Royce Conways up to 100% and released the brakes. The nose rose up and it got moving on the rising runway (as visible in this clip). By the time it reached the 01/19 intersection (just beyond how far you can see on this clip) it was airborne and climbing steeply. Such a shame it was never recorded but as someone who loves the Victor I will never forget it.
Great footage Ted. 👍😁
Something like that gets permenantly burned onto ones brain !
I've seen 1 or two increadable stunts in the Israeli Air Force, one of which was a Kurnass 2000 (Israeli Super Phantom) getting chased by an F-15C. I've never ever seen a Phantom twist and turn like that while accelarating at near vertical. Or an all white windowless 707 praticing touch and go all morning 100m away from the shop, still with the original screetching engines. Or a quartete of Hammers squadron Phantoms slowly thundering don the full length of the runway with tripple afterburner shock diamonds, loaded with all 3 massive drop tanks and several tons of payload hanging off both pylons, at dusk twilight.
That's the first time I've seen a B take off like this. Very, very impressive.
VSTOL capable
Supersonic
Stealth
Most capable AESA and sensors of any fighter
Heavy payload
Extremely safe, as in safer than 4th Gen fighters that take off and land normally.
It's an engineering marvel.
@@LRRPFco52 "Most capable AESA and sensors of any fighter"
No it doesn't, not quite.
"Extremely safe, as in safer than 4th Gen fighters that take off and land normally."
There aren't defined generations of jets; F-35 can't even supercruise.
@@jimmoynahan9910 Uh, yes. The APG-81/fused sensor suite in F-35 is without peer.
There absolutely are significant differences between 4th Gen and 5th Gen.
1. Propulsion
2. Sensor Fusion
3. VLO
4. LPI net-centric connectivity
5. MMI
6. Software-driven upgradeability, with ease of modular hardware system replacement/upgradeability
7. Digital design with multi-system integration
If you ever see people claiming 5th Gen is marketing hype, you know you're dealing with someone who has little or no knowledge about the differences in 3rd and 4th Gen major subsystems and design.
That's quite a party trick !!
Lockheed got it done, again.
Okay but it isn't a
unique 'party trick'.
Well... BAE systems and many other British companies helped to get this one done lol. But yeah 👍
@@user-dh1sb2is7v That's good to know.
I know that at least some of the A's wings are manufactured by IAI, and the helmets are from Elbit Systems in Fort Worth, Texas.
I believe several other major European nations are participating partners in this project, like Italy and Germany.
Good that the British aerospace industry have a part in producing the F-35.
Friends should work closely and be there for each other. Regards from an Israeli.
@@trespire yeah deffo.. there's about 9 UK firms on it. I love our Israeli friends btw .. I'm English
Ooohhh yeah
An exhilarating short take off, brings back happy memories of the Harrier. The Harrier was a show stopper at the Great Yarmouth Air Show, which sadly finished a few years ago.
Oiii oiiii Our first times seeing the STO, very impressive
That was really short and sweet hardly any runway needed for that great footage
Oiii oiii Nigel 🤙🏼 our first time seeing the STO. Amazing
Love all this tech stuff people - thanks 🤓
Oiii oiii Christine 🤙🏼 awesome isn’t it
Wow this is so cool 😎
What an amazing aircraft. Yet to see one flying, hopefully get to see the F35B flying into RIAT in a few weeks time
Oiii oiii Richard 🤙🏼 yeah, you must witness this aircraft. It is an awesome one
Epic video, thanks TCS - looking forward to the stream tomorrow for the king 👑 -
Oiii oiii Rebecca, I hope you enjoyed the live stream and my surprise flight taking part in the CR formation flypast 😎
Amazing! Seems to defy the laws of physics
Amazing Jon 🤙🏼Ooohhh yeah
Another amazing feat of engineering. Super good. Wouldn't mind one myself, to make a quick escape from work! Well done pilots, Ted & Nikos. Brilliant to see TCS super streams, Thank you.
Margo, you are so funny!!!
Oiii oiii Margo. Sure is an amazing feat of engineering. 🤙🏼
British engineering is awesome
An amazing takeoff thanks for capturing it!
Thank you
Went to marham family airshow on Thursday and was awesome to see the F-35 up close and to see it stop then hover mid flight then set off again 😎💪🏼
The flying lemon
I have never seen that. Usually it’s a little longer roll. Awesome!
Oiii oiii Tony 🤙🏼 This was our first time too and it was awesome
Great video work!
Thank you
Awesome
Oiii oiii Charly 🤙🏼
Very cool, brings back memory’s of the Harrier….I can hear the engine whine now 🙂 Thanks Nikos & Ted
Oiii Oii Chris. This was a treat, it is one thing being lucky at Marham but to see an STO is very cool and lucky. It does bring back memories of the Harrier and she should be proud to see what feat of engineering has been achieved from her own development
They used the VAAC Harrier testbed to develop the initial DFLCS that fed into the X-35B program. Joint US-UK program that started secretly with ASTOVL in 1983.
Harriers were thrillers too, like these F35Bs 🆒
That's why BAE are involved... It's the British engineering that's made this aircraft possible.
@@LRRPFco52yeah us Brits making good stuff again.
The plane finished engine prep at 1:14 and it already lifted off by 1:21
That's amazing, only took 8 seconds to take off. It's like Tesla Plaid S going 0-60 mph in just 1.9 seconds.
Ooohh yeah
Great video! Had a marvellous week in Norfolk in 2021 and spent most mornings stood at the perimeter fence.
I emplore anyone not from the area to go and stay. Beautiful neck of the woods and a short hop to the Yank bases too for some F15 action.
Awesome! 😎 This is the first time I've seen the take-offs (the 'landings' are amazing to watch!)... easy to see why the Navy are all over these! 😉
I wonder if the USAF will ever see the benefit and incorporate them in with 35A's; damn, I'd love to this kind of take-off at Lakenheath!! 😆 Adds a whole new meaning to 'quick climb'!! 😂
Great video Nikos/Ted....
Oii oiii Steve 🤙🏼 this was our first time seeing them do a STO. Really amazing and exciting to see 🤙🏼Ooohhh yeah
This thing can do just about everything. That's why we build, and use them now.🇺🇸🇺🇸
Ooohhh yeah
That's why BAE Systems and Rolls Royce etc... Helped to design and build loads of bits for it 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Went on detachment to Marham once, on the way there some one described it as in a desert like Ali Al Salem in Kuwait, but instead of sand, there's grass!!
😊
Awesome, thank you for serving our country
Now that was short!
Ooohh yeahh
Awwww yeah! Oi oiii TCS
Oiii oiii 🤙🏼 how you doing? Ooohhhh yeah 💜
wow
The F-35 Lightning II is a Modern
Version of the AV-8B Harrier Jump Jet
The F35 is our new modern fighter
Generation of aviation
*Love From The UK* #F35 #Aviation
Is there a best day to go to Marham to see these epic machines or is it luck of the draw.
Just luck 🍀
I used to own a Peugeot 308 cabriolet and you couldn't operate the hood above 11 mph. The operating speed on the F35 seems a lot higher! Anyone out there know the figures? Asked a lot of these questions at the Cosford airshow Typhoon desk and realised very quickly that the bloke there wasn't even a pilot!
Pretty fabulous takeoff with VTOL mode on for the F-35B Lightning II as it took off gracefully as well !! 😎😎🤩🤩
STOVL not VTOL
Like that's not some science fiction movie.
Thought the initial climb of the second F-35 looked a bit dodgy at one stage, change of pants for that pilot when he gets back😂
Yeah it didn’t look right did it, lift fan didn’t sound as loud and the nozzle config was different. Maybe they have multiple versions of the STOVL profiles for different weights etc
Just normal crosswind on take-off, nothing more.
Question: do the best pilots in the raf get the f35 or the euro fighter?
After successful completion of Fast Jet Training from RAF Valley, it’s up to their career path. If they choose F35B, they will got to Marham with 207 Sqn, if it’s Typhoon, they go to Ted HQ (Coningsby) and are with 29 Sqn
What spot is this and what side of the runway is it? 24 or 06
24 Ooohhh yeah
" _The RAF omit the 'II' because this is RAFs third Lightning!_ " - Sorry if this joke has been made earlier, but it seems, sometimes lightning strikes thrice. 🤭
What can I say about this kind of take off? Bring it on! You don't see something like this any day and as long as it makes lots of noise, it's for me anyway! 😄
Oiii oiii it’s awesome
@@B-A-L One is enough for me.😉
@@LEJapproach an me the english electric lightning!!!oiiioiii ted!
@@B-A-L incorrect. P38 was officially the RAFs first lightning, regardless if they cancelled or not, they still flew it briefly
There has to be a dummy sensor that will not allow the afterburner to go off while the hood is up
Send it
Oii oiiii
That was about a 40foot rotate!
Ooohhh yeah
Can they take of like a conventional jet?
Yes they can Ooohh yeah:_:
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa- ssssssum !
Impressive yes, but imho it will never replace the harrier in its VSTOL capability.
It has and does in leaps and bounds, especially for safety, departure payload, bring-back payload, and operations at night.
great footage. Agree the second liftoff was a bit askew... I wish people would stop comparing this jet with the Harrier, the Harrier was a crapshoot if it would crash or successfully takeoff. The F35 would eat the Harrier for a light snack...
We lost at least 100 Harriers with 20 fatalities in its first 10 years of service.
Just crosswind from right to left.
Actually comparing it is right seen as us Brits sorted this too lol
@@B-A-L Between RAF, RN, USMC, and Spanish Navy from the 1970s-1980s, including losses in the Falklands.
Harrier did it with a lot less fuss
And with that logic we should have kept the Sopwith Camel and not modernised. Come on...
@@ryanelcock948lol 👍
The Harrier was way ahead of its time.
I don't like the F35 and maybe (like the Americans) we should have developed the Harrier further.
The technology is there with the F35 and everyone in the West is buying the aircraft.
Maybe without the Harrier, the F35 would never have got off the ground (pun intended).
Such an amazing misunderstood aircraft. Capable of feeding data anhydride environments to other launching platforms on air sea and land along with performing untouched and heavy contested environments. Making the pilots decisions anywhere from 5 seconds to a full minute faster than even the closest competing aircraft. It will have a firing solution on a Target so much faster whether that is air-to-air or air-to-ground. Capable of swarm mode we're a group of f-35 can saturate an air defense and if one of them out of 10 find a targeting solution that means they all have it and one of them sees a threat that means they all do in the computer can work in the background on countermeasures both physical and countermeasures including electronic jamming pod release countermeasures and has a tow rope pod that mimics aircraft signature at the moment a missile locks onto it and amplifies the signature the missile has locked onto . All this and more will the put in the computer are still figuring out Target solutions
Subsonic is too slow for the modern battle space. That was the Harrier’s biggest drawback 764mph vs 1,227mph for the F35. The F35 also carries far more payload much further.
Compared to the Eurofighter its very slow and vulnerable on takeoff. The Eurofighter would be at 10,000 feet going vertical at 350 mph in the same timeframe.
EF Typhoon takes a bit longer to rotate. If you do a conventional take off in the F-35, it has an impressive climb rate as well, and blistering acceleration from 200kts to Mach 1.
Typhoon will push through the Mach faster if it's configured for A2A and has better supersonic acceleration performance, higher service ceiling.
Typhoon was built primarily as a fighter/interceptor with semi-conformal carriage of 4x BVRAAMs and a great look-down, shoot-down fire control Radar, superb maneuverability.
F-35 out-classes typhoon in detection range, tracking, PID, NCTR, and exploitation of WEZ/NEZ, by significant factors.
We worked on the post-stall flight regime algorithms for the Typhoon before it was even born. Very wonderful jet for its era.
it can take off normally like an F-35A version, its just practicing carrier takeoffs here.
But not as fast.
Not as eloquent as a Harrier ❤❤
That lid doesn't look very aerodynamic.
It’s the ‘Lift Fan’, it is what assists the aircraft to be STOVL, it isn’t meant to be aerodynamic
Lift fan intake cover, open in the STOVL envelope up to 250 KIAS.
What's the point of it? I preferred the Harrier!
I guess the F-35's military value is a lot higher than the Harrier's. I mean, as impressive as it was, it's a 1960s aircraft.
Stealth.
That's the point.
Exactly, keeping up with generations/ advancements in technology. Good answer 🤙🏼
@@B-A-L Listen. The aircraft was designed to be stealthy AND it is. So STFU.
@@B-A-L Weapons bays carry a lot more than you might think, plus internal fuel is at least 13,100 lbs.
For reference, an F-16 carries 7,000 lbs internally, plus an additional 5,000lbs externally in draggy EFTs, which eliminate any weapons carriage on those stations.
Typhoon carries 11,000 lbs internal. Each EFT for Typhoon is about 1,700 lbs of fuel, again negating a weapon on that station.
F-35B has 4 internal weapons stations, 2 for BVRAAMs, and 2 for 1000lb class bombs.
Not a fan of F35.
Lots of bad information out there.
