A friend of mine has always been really good with computers & never had a problem getting a new contract. As soon as he turned fifty he really struggled to pick up work in this area despite all his knowledge & experience and he ended up working abroad for several years in his fifties as that was the only work he could get. The idea that anyone in their fifties can walk into a job should they want it is a fallacy whatever government ministers say.All they can ever come up with is " Go & get a job at B&Q" as if that should be the height of any over fifty's ambition. All very depressing.
when we have worked since leaving school age 16, contributed to society, bought up the next generation and kept on the right side of the lay are we not allowed to shirk awhile until we leave to meet our maker!!
The mps created this black hole let them pay for it take their heating bill and make the boat people work job done and leave granny's heating allowances alone
I worked from age 17 to 70 so I have earned my retirement. Now aged 77. My wife was not so lucky two months before her retirement with a full state pension she passed away thanks to the virtual shutdown of the NHS in 2020. I see no mention of all those who pay into the system but die early and the state profits. Funny how pensioners have to suffer while the invasion of illegal migrants live in relative luxury and offer nothing to our country.
I think I am not alone, as an over 50, who feels let down and disillusioned with our country atm. You work and build a community for many years, only for the others to take it free.
My brother and his wife would have both been classed as economically inactive as they were both in teaching and retired at 60 due to having good pensions and a paid off mortgage.
The over 50's have already paid in 35 years of their working life. I don't balme them for retiring early the way they are being taxed to the hilt and their state pension under threat. Get the youngsters as they are leaving school that must be where you start surely.
The problem for this could be that it is much harder to find a good job when you are over 50 like myself . They say there is no age discrimination out there , but i still think there is .. Also the work sector is pretty dire , so entry level jobs like hospitality and the like are not suitable for many seniors . You are on the same wavelength as me here so thanks . A last point here is that many people do not drive and this can be a barrier and having to rely on terrible bus services .
In my mid thirties educated with a physics degree, had 15-20 years of engineering experience including quality assurance, was told by employers “I WAS TOO OLD.” Now I am in my seventies, they can KMHA. Ageism amongst employers is rife.
I hate judgement from newspaper or other people about being off work. How is judging going to change their minds?, it doesn’t it is irrational and silly.
I strongly suspect that with all this talk of means testing the state pension. Many of us will retire in our 50s, draw out our private pensions completely and then leave in relative poverty on the state pension.
I used mine to pay off my mortgage while you can still get the 25% discount. Even with the horrific tax it is still less than the interest on a mortgage.
Glad this video wasn’t corrupted after all , very interesting as I’m in the age bracket and never hear back from job applications for minimum wage part time work ! If Rachel Reeves can give me a job then I’ll give it some consideration 🤔
I am one of the over 50's and I don't give a fuck if anyone thinks I am a lazy shirker or not. I worked hard and went without saved for decades to get where I am financially. Therefore I will enjoy it as I wish. And if I end up on benefits later on, so what? I have paid into the system for over 40 years.
When I worked in a large Government department, they were constantly trying to shove their older workers out on "Early Retirement". They were really just interested in reducing their current wage bills. Tp them the older workers were the most expensive ones, because they had accumulated so many annual service increments.
I remember over 40 years ago on a government training course with a lot of over the 50s saying the same old stuff nobody wanted to employ them etc, I would imagine in 100 years nothing will have changed
I’m now experiencing this where they do not want to employ me due to my age. So employers are to blame on that one. I was a store manager, because of that supervisors or managers feel threatened. Don’t know why I don’t want the responsibility of a store or employees.
The healthy life expectancy in the UK is age 63 (not life expectancy which is age 80). Around age 63 and beyond your health is likely to start to deteriorate. Why on earth would anyone want to retire long after healthy life expectancy? Everyone should retire long before the healthy life expectancy age so that you get a decent period of worry free retirement. Age 50-55 is a good time to retire, ideally we'd all retire as early as possible.
So for example a supermarket is looking for shelf stackers etc manual work type of vacancies, are they going to employ a 58 year old over a quick stronger faster worker of a 20 year old? who will be better value for money and can do more work? 😂
Not true. My 54 year old daughter got a job as the only women with 20/30 year old men on factory floor. Guess who consistently produces more products each day? Yes, my daughter. She says youngsters spend half their time on phone sorting out their personal lives.
Generally it's true, also depends on the job, a sitting down job with just hands dexterity would have a different outcome sometimes, same for a overweight 20 year old vs a slim 20 year old they're just fitter and more able @@rcqc4193
Hiya Claudia I got made redundant with a few months to run to retirement age and hit loads of knockbacks trying to apply for jobs. Hi Marc, I’m in MK too , to volunteer you often need DBS checks and references from 2 people - then have to read and understand tons of policies and procedures - when all you want to do is give your time freely and stop yourself from going mad - I’m not succeeding !
I’m 64 been working full time since 1977, 3 month on the dole the last three months of 1978 because of the lorry drivers strike, last time I was on sick I had three days off in 2003, god I’m a hell of a shirker!
One or two points you do not mention. I've worked in Spain, 1 year, Canada, 5 years, Greece 10 years, Denmark 5/6 months, France 5/6 months & many jobs in the UK. The bosses in the UK compared to those elsewhere are, crap. Them in 2022 at 82 Johnson backed his Tory Backbenchers saying 'the old need to die.' Johnson then cancelled the mild safety measures in place so I caught 'Long Covid' in May 2022 taking 80% of my energy & strength. An older friend died from that another Professor/writer friend spent 2 years in bed & he is a work fiend, now on his feet. One million UK citizens now suffer Long Covid that is no joke. I still work at my work at a lesser pace. Brexit, by the Tories, means one fourth of small companies closed. Probably more as here in central London over a half of companies have closed down most premises remaining empty or are taken over by scams.
The 50s were the ones who studied or trained and were the era who got up at 5am for work for years, saved etc and body alters over 50 ie met a few having knee replacement s etc and your work if not privileged may have affected body
I’m 58 yrs old and work 40+ hrs a week the only time I’ve been off work was when I had my 2 kids and even then I was only off a couple of months both times and then when I had cancer, I had to go back to work during treatment as I couldn’t live on SSP so believe I’m sure as hell not bloody lazy, I’ve worked from the age of 16 yrs old!
People are getting sicker, but don't be too quick to blame people - refined seed oils (vegetable oils) are getting put into our food in one way or another in ever increasing amounts. Best thing we can all do is to try to avoid them as much as we can.

I had similar thoughts yesterday. Especially those with poor health who don't expect to have a very long retirement post 67/68😐😐

Not thought of that strategy.

One reason why they did away with annual increments many years ago.
