    Ended up with a rescue lorikeet as my first bird, totally by chance and out of nowhere, I was so unprepared and so was she. It’s been nearly a year with her now, I would never recommend anyone have one as a beginner bird, but my goodness do I love her and the hours of care she requires every week. I wouldn’t trade her for the world

    As for diet, its not that bad, i go to the store once every other month and buy a ton of vegetables and fruit, blend it all in a mix, freeze in weekly portions, i mix a 1:1 ratio of the food blend with the lori food/nectar, and gets a couple scoops a day, mix with apple sauce as it entices them, then i give apple juice twice a day and they get water routinely

    When we lived in Sydney we fed the Rainbows from our 3rd floor balcony. Occasionally they'd come into the apartment and have a good look around before heading off again and we could get them on our hand. So they sort of made themselves our pets!

    I got an eight month old rainbow lorikeet a few months ago and he is so much fun. He has no fear of anything loves to sit on my shoulder when I feed my horses. He's learned to say hello what are you doing. And whistles. Jumps onto me as soon as i open the cage door. So much fun. Lots of pears and apples brussel sprouts and lorikeet mix mixed with water and dry

    I have a friend that has 2 lorikeets. They are cute, sweet and pretty nippy. She has transitioned them into a diet that’s higher in pellets than fruit. She did this under the guidance of an Avian vet who is very familiar with lorikeets. So, even though they still poop a lot it’s not as bad as a full fruit diet. They also, as you said, eat constantly. They are very noisy and shrill. They are wired for sound! They are a great example of the need to do research on a pet before you bring it into your life.

    Rainbow lorikeets are extremely curious, intelligent, loving, hyper, vocal, loud, funny. They are sht stirrers and tantrum throwers. They want your company all day every day they love cuddles and kisses and will occasionally bite. They love to dance, bath & sing. They are protective of you ( my boy will watch over me while I sleep on the couch & run to “defend”me from my dog).
    they are jealous and will love you more then anything else in the world they are so amazing.
    They remind me of velociraptors.
    If you are thinking of getting one I think the biggest thing to know is how much attention they demand, the noise (they are loud!!) and the mess (messy eaters) oh and they can draw blood if frightened (it blooody hurts).

    • @mehere8038
      @mehere8038 3 роки тому +1

      I'd suggest the biggest thing to know is that they MUST have a lorikeet companion to actually be happy & giving them that, they will still be loyal & loving of their human & have plenty of time & energy for their human, but they will also be happy to be with their mate & so not feel the need to be with their human mate at all times

      My rainbow lorikeet is glued to me. I take him camping with me and he just sits on my shoulder all the time or on my camp chair & sleeps in his travel home in my tent. When I’m walking in the bush he just climbs all over me like a monkey chatting to me taking to me. Some days I wish he could be more independent and be okay to just chill by himself for a bit but then I do like having him on me where ever I go. He was raised from a baby always with his owner, the more time you spend with them on your shoulder while your doing something the better but show them what your doing and talk to them let them tast what your holding (as long as they can) try include them in what ur doing so they learn that shoulder = interesting/safety.

He is 3 years now and a very lovely bird. Sometimes he needs some blood :-) We mix the loryfood with honey. When we rise and shine our lory needs a warm "breakfast" He likes his loryfood with honey and water at a temperature of 30 degrees Celsius. Every two days he needs a " tub" to bath in water 30 degrees celsius......
    His compagnon is a male love bird. They are not always good friends......... When they look for some fight we put them apart. By the way: the price here in the Netherlands for a rainbow lorikeet is about 200 USA Dollars.

      You might want to try cold water with the food, warm water like that makes them think it's from another bird's crop & is therefore mating behaviours & can make them hormonal. Switching to cold water may reduce some of the fighting between the 2 you have. It might now, bt there's a good chance it will help.
      Mine also like cold water only to bathe in & refuse to go into any that even has the chill removed from it. I wish I could get mine into 30c water in winter, I don't like giving them cold baths, but it's all mine will take. Would be interesting to know how yours would respond to cooler water on occasion, being used to warm water, would be good if it would have all different temp waters & so be able to change with the seasons, no harm in 30c water for bathing though, sounds nice to me :) Do try cool food though, as it may really help you with that fighting

      lol yup, that's what I've done, clear plastic around the lower half, (no perches above that level in the cage) bent in at the bottom so it drips down into the tray at the bottom, that's full of kitty litter. On the top of the cage bottom wire I have shade cloth screens on wireframes, that I replace & hose daily, that catches the more solid stuff & lets the liquid drop through into the litter below. Easiest cleaning option I've found - not that there's any easy option with lorries

    With all due respect, if you are going to put this beautiful and intelligent creature in a cage and go to work all day everyday then you should not get one. I live in Australia and wild Rainbow Lorikeets come to my window everyday, they are highly intelligent insatiably, curious and need constant stimulation, they don't belong in a cage.

    • @Moose0fNorway
      @Moose0fNorway 8 місяців тому

      They don't belong in a house/apartment either, they're wild animals. With your logic, no one should have any pets, the only reason we can argue we should have dogs is because we've domesticated them to the ground. So with your logic, NO PETS.

    • @dreadlord5581
      @dreadlord5581 6 місяців тому

      @@Moose0fNorway Personally I think birds are a different category though. Putting a creature that can FLY in a cage just seems wrong.
      As an aside, I come from Sydney, where these birds are as common as clouds, and to see such a social bird (which usually exists in very large flocks) alone is another layer of unnecessary cruelness.

    • @Moose0fNorway
      @Moose0fNorway 6 місяців тому

      @@dreadlord5581 that's favourism. Your logic doesn't rely on the animal being able to fly or not. You're just adding that layer to justify having other pets.

    • @dreadlord5581
      @dreadlord5581 6 місяців тому

      @@Moose0fNorway Well, just my opinion, but a Rainbow Lorikeet would typically travel around 30kms a day, add the dimension of height in through flight and we are talking about a massive bubble that these creatures would normally roam - you simply cannot say that keeping them in a typical home cage, or even a home aviary is anything but cruel - especially to a species as intelligent as Parrots.
      As for the comparison to other pets - If people kept cats or dogs in a cage they would be reported to animal welfare agencies.

    • @Moose0fNorway
      @Moose0fNorway 6 місяців тому

      @@dreadlord5581 Do you know how far wolves and wild cats travel in a day? Do you know why dogs have to be trained to not piss inside the house? And sure, over several thousands of years, we've managed to selectively breed wolves into something completely different than what they originally were, but they still need way longer trips than what the average dog owner is capable to even start comparing itself to what they would have done in the wild.
      But you're ok with that, because you like having those as pets. And there's lots of people who keep their dogs in cages. Not all day though, just like parrot owners normally dont keep their parrots in cages all day either. My parrot is only in the cage if I'm outside and didn't bring her.
      Parrots actually have very clear telling signs of wethere they're getting what they need or not. They get visibly depressed if those needs are not met. They start plucking feathers and behaving very differently than what they normally would.
