Literally the definition of morally grey.
Apparently that's something writers desire to create.
Sure made it interesting to try to guess his true nature - but whatever it was, it was corrupted after what happened to him in Mass Effect 3.

More defining than even apocalypse now

The Illusive Man is probably the most interesting video game character I've ever seen. Just saying.
Handsome Jack is really interesting too
Especially after you read mass effect book trilogy
Damn. If you read 1 on 3 books about Mass Effect from Dru Carpishen (Revelations) or Comics about Ashley on Idem Prime, or Kali Sanders....you probably know how DEEP the rabbit hole....

Shepard did everything right. More than we could've hoped for. Saving the Citadel -- even saving the Council. Humanity has the trust of the entire galaxy...and still it's not enough.
Our sacrifices have earned the Council's gratitude. But Shepard still remains our best hope.
@Spetsnaz
Miranda: The Reapers is still out there...
Illusive Man: And it's up to us to stop them...
@Spetsnaz but Shepard? They'll follow him...
@Spetsnaz
If we lose Shepard, humanity might follow...
I nearly regret sacrificing the council in ME1 because I was brainwashed thinking the council was involved with the reapers but it was Cerberus all along.
“Cerberus thanks you for all your hard work.” Mass Effect 2... perfect music for a perfect game.

If this was recorded the first time you meet the Illusive Man, then that means he spent 4 billion credits and 2 years patiently waiting just for Shepard to stand there for an hour.
Illusive Man: “Commander Shepard”
Shepard: “Illusive Man, I thought we’d be meeting face to face.”
Illusive Man: “A necessary precaution, not unusual for people who know what you and I know.”
Shepard: ...1 hour later...”And what exactly is it that you and I know.”
and yet he is unique
I never ever thought about that. DAMMMMMMM
Illusive man: "That our place in universe are more fragile than we thought"
He stopped Miranda for putting a chip in Sheps brain to control him. It's ironic at the same time Illusive man wanted to control the reapers but not shep
@@alexh6767 that's because the indoctrination, TIM and Cerberus were not completely evil before this
he sat still doing nothing for 1 hour, that was incredible
He's listening to Shepard yap about baking techniques.
And in all that time, he resisted the urge to smoke.
"There, Earth. I wish you could see it like I do, Shepard. It’s so...perfect." Goodbye Jack Harper, if only you weren't indoctrinated, what a great man you'd be...
@Spetsnaz the best
His indoctrination wasn't what made him evil. He had elements of gray in his ultimate goals, but the sacrifices he made to get there were simply too great. all for what? Human supremacy?
@@davidbritt5020 Well, you have to understand his backstory. He was a soldier too once during the First Contact War. He had a very bad experience with the turians and lost many close squadmates. It only makes sense he's as hardened as he is.
@@mrAZcardinal Doesn't make him not a piece of shit though
@@gp75motorsports yeah, well. Most everyone are pieces of shit in their own way
One of the best pieces of music in the franchise. Also a track that makes me nostalgic of ME1. And the setting...beautiful. IM knows how to make introductions.
Thanks for this video! Other vids with this track don’t have the moving sun in the background, so I appreciate it!
Makes me wanna replay it again. I hope they remaster this trilogy for next gen consoles

I can't wait for when all of this is built in the future. Lucky bastard spends all his time facing away from it too. Out of every science fiction story I've experienced, Mass Effect is the one that feels real enough to become our reality someday.
I wish it doesn’t. It’s cool for sure, but i wouldn’t want to risk being the victim of the things reapers and their servants do to people.
This or The Expanse series.

"Control is the means to survival - control of the reapers, and of you, if necessary."
November Sierra great line!
The part where you know he's not himself. That Cerberus has become a husk of itself. He went from Renegade to Villain the same way Saren did.
Spoiler alert:
I wish if Cerberus didn't become as evil as they did in ME3! But for all its worth i didn't kill The Illusive Man in ME3 at the end , I let him realize how bad he had become and gone stray from Cerberus Ideal goals in ME2, then he shot him self out of guilt, and made him realize that he was Indoctrinated all the way! The same exact thing i did with Saren Arterius in ME1 . This game is my favorite and we have Bioware to thank for that even if Bioware has become the worst nowadays, I won't forget that they gave us the best Franchise in all the gaming industry, and I've played REALLY GOOD games out there throw the years like Uncharted series, God of War Series, Metal Gear Series, The Elder Scrolls Series, The Witcher 3, Horizon Zero Dawn, Spider-Man, The Red Dead Redemption 1 , 2, even all GTAs, The Last of us, Assassin Creeds, Bioshock1,3, Resident Evil games and so it goes on, "But nothing can beat Mass Effect Trilogy and that's my ultimate opinion" .
They didn't "become" evil. They were extremely shady in ME1. That whole experimenting on people thing, remember?
They're more like bad guys turned good guys, turned bad guys, if you want to explain it in simplistic terms.
Or, a complex organization with a lot of good and a lot of bad people, but where ultimately the mantra is "the end ALWAYS justifies the means".
That mantra is destined to lead to a dark path from the get go.
I didn't like like ME 3, ME 1 and ME 2 was far more better then that game but still yeah its the best trilogy on galaxy
@@Alexandra.AI. Yeah but they betrayed their ideals in ME3, that's what I can't stand. Cerberus was the greatest opposition to the Reapers, even though they were ruthless, they knew Shepard was the only hope and brought him back, even equipped him and gave him a free hand. TIM would never betray humanity to the Reapers.
Mass effect 2 would have to be right up there as one of the best games i ever played.
"Salvation comes with a cost. Judge us not by our methods, but by what we seek to accomplish."
"...Remember Shepherd, you've been gone a long time, things have changed."
DAMNIT SHEPARD! Destroying the Reapers gains us NOTHING!
How about peace?
They're just trying to control us. Think about it: if they wanted all organic life destroyed, they could do it. There would be nothing left.
And he was totally right in that line after all
@@johnsmachine1
And what are you talking about?
Cerberus really was a dangerous enemy because how much they believed in their goals.
a trillionaire's view.
The Illusive Man is more human than John Shepard. Humans by their nature encompass both the best and worse of the same; The Illusive man was just more true to this notion. A shame really how things turned out. It could have been so much better. Maybe the Illusive Man could have recognized the virtue of embracing other species, but in a way that didn't diminish his desire for humanity to see things through, a benevolent dictator so to speak, or a Ceasar. A ruthless being for a ruthless galaxy, what a match.
One Cigar Smoke and Alcohol Slip at a time
In many ways, I wish Shepard could've bonded with the Illusive Man more and that he was never indoctrinated. I feel too many characters are wasted with indoctrination. The Illusive man could've been a great leader for humanity.
I only recently finished a playthrough of Legendary Edition. Listening to this makes me want to run thorough it again.
Do it
ME2 has the best soundtrack I’ve already started a new playthrough on my 360 gonna go back through the entire series over the course of 3 months can’t wait!
"Cerberus is an idea"
"that idea isn't so easily destroyed"
Maaan, I love your dedication to this channel!
„So...the illusive man was right after all“
"yes but he could never control us,
because we already controlled him"
“It’s up to us to stop them.”
SPOILERS IN THIS POST
Shepard never lost his/her way, he/she a soldier, and his/her task was to destroy the Reapers, there was no other solution, no other way to interpret things. Swaying from this point of view would eventually lead to indoctrination, no matter what, and the Illusive Man was the definite proof of this. He was the most steadfast supporter of human supremacy and his long term goals and visions were always clear to him, yet he succumbed as soon as he started to believe he could control the Reapers. This belief inherently leads to the thought that it is best to keep the Reapers alive, and thus, the Reapers snatched on and their indoctrination took root.
You can truly see this in the last scene, as he slowly comes to realize that he was indoctrinated. His suave facade crumbles as he understands that Shepard is right, he already lost, the Reapers have him and everything he does from then on helps the Reapers. He becomes nervous, agitated, he denies it, becomes angry, and finally accepts it. He understood the only thing he could do from there on to harm the Reapers and help humanity was end his life and let Shepard walk the path he failed to conquer. One last shot for the cause he'd lost sight of.
Remastered Edition is coming ME fans. Can’t wait.

For yoomanity.
I thought I was the only one that found the way he says" humanity " weird
you manatee
the masked man fits perfectly. besides him being more morally grey instead of evil like the illusive man
In that new show Andor. Stellan Skarsgards character reminds me so much of TIM
I wish they added an option to side with the illusive man and cerberus in the whole franchise and ending controlling the reapers at the end
Shepard, it is a new day, and we thank you for your deliverance.
This is what all your videos have built up to. The magnum opus.
High Tangerine Dream vibes.
I've been looking for this version of the song. The piece at 3:28 is one of the best parts, but it's not in alot of the Illusive Man/You're In My Chair songs uploaded to youtube.
*"Strength for "Cerberus" - strength for every human. "Cerberus" is humanity."*
"Cerberus isn't just an organisation OR the people behind it
Cerberus is an IDEA, That idea isn't so easily destroyed"
Raycevik described this song well, it's calm and collected, but with clear sense of desperation to it. simply beautiful
It reminds me so much of a Deus Ex conversation theme. It truly fits perfectly with the engima that is The Illusive Man.
When you think about it , The illusive man save the galaxy by bringing shepard back. Without him the reaper would have won
anyone else here traces of "suicide mission" in his theme? Its subtle but you can hear the beginning of "suicide mission" before it goes into the full on epic orchestral part in TIM's theme 5:10 listen to that part then listen to the begining of suicide mission you'll see what I mean
Your right!
3:28 You cant tell me this theme wasnt made for someone meant for greatness as a character. Like a deep complex mysterious man that makes you question your entire choices.
Not a one-dimensional ceo of a terrorist organisation in ME3
"And I don't know if the Reapers understand fear, but you killed one. They have to respect that"
I don't why but when I hear this music I get more creative during programming session :)
**SPOILER**
My Sheppard was having a romance with Thane, and when I was on the final mission of ME2 I was about to do as the Illusive Man was telling me to, until Thane spoke to me: "Don't turn the thing you sworn to destroy".
Next thing I remember I was blowing the shit up of the Reapers base.
So...You wanted to give the Collector Base to The Illusive Man, but then you blew it up? 😁 I hope you brought Miranda as well. 😁😁
@@KritoSkywaker Actually yeah, I brough Miranda haha
I hope they make another one with the same team for mass effect 2

I think the First part of the ost shows the unknown and the humanity with huge wish for exploring and stepping forward in the galactic community. The second part might show the " indoctrination" of Jack Harper and how his ideas started going completely wrong and failed to Cerberus and himself.
I recommend you guys to read the comics for more lore about him and other important side characters.
What happened to your version of "Reflections", the major love theme in ME2? Can't find it anywhere on your channel. Did you have to take it down? :(
how did you record that masterpiece? like what mods did you use to be able to record that scene, no grafik mods. would luv to know. thanks in advance

"You have to earn the right to ask me those kinds of questions."
This and then the mission end theme... absolute bliss.
One of the best theme songs ever
Goodbye... Shepard.

Having read all the books, comics and passed all 3 parts of the Mass Effect, my attitude to The Illusive Man and Cerberus can be described: "Neutral, mixed with disgust". I understand the goals and motives of this organization, to elevate and protect humanity, but the way they try to achieve it I hate, especially after what The Illusive Man has done to Paul Grayson, their experiments on people and not only and the study of Reaper technology where they subsequently indoctrination The Illusive Man. I understand why they did it, but I do not accept it. I have no hatred for Cerberus or The Illusive Man, I just have a neutral-disgust for him and his organization.
Peak mass effect
The Illusive Man felt like GMan if he was understandable and fleshed out. He radiated so much power.
