Carnival of Monsters | Doctor Who Marathon From The Beginning | Is This The CLEVEREST Story So Far?

  • After being given his freedom back by the Time Lords, the Doctor is free once again to travel time and space. His first journey with his new found freedom sees him land inside a miniscope.
But is this miniscope simply just a device to view Drashigs and other monsters? Or can it also act as a microscope with which to examine Doctor Who itself?
Join me as I get far too caught up on analysing a single joke...

My favourite Pertwee story! This is Doctor Who distilled: historical setting, alien planet setting, monsters, dodgy aliens in capes. It has the same spirit of adventure as The Chase, but an immeasurably superior script that does its ambition justice. Its self-referential analysis of Doctor Who is done with style and subtlety, something the revival era of the show has often lacked.

This is probably my favourite Pertwee story. It’s definitely the one I think about the most

Such a great story, funny, intelligent, makes meta commentary on the show itself, has some of the best Doctor Jo interactions, parallels their relationship hilariously with Vorg and Shirma, Michael Wisher is hysterical, the SS Bernice is hysterical, even the lapse into cheapness with the effects works - something Holmes expected, hence calling them Drashigs as an anagram of dishrags which is what he predicted they'd be made out of. What other show can do things like this!?

I think, probably the most innovative story "Doctor Who" has ever done! Absolutely love it!
Everyone works well here but the Kalak & Orum double act is beautiful, and they way the script plots that it's in Kalik's best interests to save The Doctor & Jo from the Drashigs is perfect writing from Holmes.
    "Merciful & Compassionate, Kaliik?"
    "One has twinges!"
Such a different villainous beat from Micheal Wisher! A total contrast to Davros!

I've always loved this story and saw it as a child when it was first aired. It's probably my all time favourite Pertwee story. When I found out that, many years later, the scenes in the marshland with the Drashigs was filmed in the Dengie marshes, not far from where I grew up, made the story even better as it added something personal to me about it. 5 out of 5.

My kind of Dr Who story. Compact and self contained with no wider implications for time, space or anything else. Most importantly it's just great fun.

This story is a jewel in the crown not just of the Third Doctor, but the entire show. Bob Holmes was such a genius!

Re that lovely "lateral thinking" scene, it's probably no coincidence that Edward de Bono, who invented the term, had written best-sellers on the subject of lateral thinking in the late 1960s and early 70s. One such was _Lateral Thinking: Creativity Step By Step_ which was published in 1970 and reissued in paperback in 1973.

Drinking Game Idea - Take a shot every time Chris says "literally" or "laterally". Good luck surviving!

Again, one of those Doctor Who stories that is campy but done well.
Shirna's smile at the end is the perfect reaction for the story
Though it is best not to think about what happened to the SS Bernice as it is still reported missing.

Looking up Lateral Thinking... Saw an example using a Maze, where it shows Starting Point A on 1 side and B on the Opposite Side. Linear would be going thru the Maze, taking all its twists, turns, dead ends... And Lateral being just "walking" on the Outside of the Maze, in an almost direct/shorter/simpler path...
If I ever get the opportunity, I'm going to try this, if I want to "race" someone thru said maze

I wonder what sort of results could have been had Holmes ever turned his hand to writing a sitcom...

Yeah, i noticed the meta commentry reviewing the story back in the 80s. Carnival of Monsters is genius Doctor Who had been criticised for its violence and the aliens represent those critics.
