Wow super video. I had a guy replace my belt. He found the balance belt broken while the TB was not. (I had service documentation from the last TB service saying they replaced both belts--guess someone was lying) He replaced both. when I got the car back it was "vibration city" See video under this same ID. Didn't know this about the balance shaft. apparently he did not know it either. He gave me a hard time saying he did not know where the vibes were coming from. He said if he took it apart and found nothing wrong he would charge me again! My wife said it did not sound like the guy knew what he was doing and why would I want to bring it back to him? Listened to my wife. Had someone else fix it... cost me labor all over again but no more vibration!

Working on Mitsus for 18 years and only timing belts I ever use was either OEM or Gates. I run A LOT of Gates products and have no issues what so ever. I'm running a Gates timing belt right now on my race car, not one single issue far as fitment or any engines I rebuilt. So I beg to differ on your statement on Gates timing belts 😉

    • @ttpgarage
      @ttpgarage 2 роки тому +5

@@troyjango2492 the problem is not the parts, it's the people that put them on incorrectly. Mitsubishi is one of those cars if you don't do it right or know what your doing, you will have problems. I had someone put their own timing belt on a Eagle Talon and the belt was too tight and wiped out the oil pump, front case, timing belt and tensioner. Let's just say he had to pay twice for a bad mistake. I used Conti-tech, Dayco, Continental etc etc and either they snap or tear to shreds. Only one that never had a issue was OEM or Gates, Gates is very accessible to get so I've been using them and also their Kevlar Racing Belts as well with no issues. As long as it is installed correctly, you will be fine 😉👍🏻

Question: I have a 1.8 single over head cam. Didn't have any problems with marks under cover, but where the heck is the mark on the harmonic balance? While the car seems to run fine, I can't verify base ignition timing as I don't have a mark on the balancer. I also have another balancer, but there's no mark on it either. Any advise is greatly appreciated! :)

  • @coopercruse5867

Although you are some what correct I think your being a little to critical of Gates belts, I believe its a bigger issue with the mechanic and lack of knowledge than the actual part. Set the oil pump/balance shaft up correctly and get the tension correct to the point where the tensioner lock pin is free and you wont have a drama. I have used many and never had a problem , And on the older type mitsi,s like the 4G32 the oil pump/balance shaft is in reverse to the later type, You actually have to set it up with the gear mark wanting to fall away . But for the average person the removal of the 14mm bolt in the side of the block and the use of a screw driver or a clean shaft to determine that the shaft is in the correct position would be good advice, You should be able to insert a screw driver all the way in if its in the correct position, if it hits the shaft its wrong. Also it is why when you have fitted the belts and made your adjustments you should turn the engine over by hand at least 2 times more if you like 4 is good, then leave it 15 mins and then make sure the pin can be removed freely from the tensioner , if it can be then its correct. no matter what belt you use.

Thanks for sharing your experiences! I love 4g63's for the most part, but not their timing (and a few other pitfalls). By the way, if you haven't heard of them already, the UA-cam channels "Jafromobile" and "Tom's Turbo Garage" have some (in my opinion) great videos on cars/engines which might be of interest to somebody like you with 19 years of Mitsu tech experience. Jafro in particular really goes into technical detail on 4g63's.
One question: when you said to never use aftermarket parts, did you mean just the timing parts, or the entire engine? I've seen a lot of good comments about certain types of aftermarket upgrades from people who tune 4g63's to dramatically increase the horsepower.

Hey thanks for that. I never have tried timing myself. I figure if the shops have messed them up it must be crazy hard. I wish i could do more but im scared to mess things up. Anyways i have a squicky and squishy sound coming from crank area. Noises seem to change and get worse. I was thinking crank pulley. Baught an alluminum one but now hear your no aftermarket parts thingy. I hope it's ok to use. I will try and then see what you have to say then maybe replace again depending what you say. Not even sure if that is the problem or not. Some i see the balance shaft thing as well. Wish you lived close to me id love to be your neighbor and learn and have you do it correctly too. Thanks again man, Charlie.

Hey there ...Great video. I bought a 1978 dodge colt 1.6 ltr mitsubishi import. She sat in a garage for 16 years before I found her ... body and interior are mint .The tie rods are shot and the timing belt surely needs replacing as she now sits at 170,000 km. Does this tip apply to a 3rd generation colt? Also, what other components as critical as the timing belt , should be checked and replaced ? Should I put a new water pump in while doing the belt ? Thanks .

Good advice based on experience, but people should be aware that it is equally important to replace the oil seals first. Oil leaking on the cogs and new belt will cause a serious problem in a very short time.

i bought myself a granny owned 92 2.4 mighty max. super basic model, no ac, no power steering, etc. its awesome, and only has 85k, well 89 now cause its my dd.
anyways, it only had one owner, who I'm sure kept it mechanically sound while they had it; they kept it pretty clean all around.
I've been tinkering with it, just kinda fixing n replacing what looks worn and ready to go. so far ive put a new radiator in (old one was cashed, and kept the cars temp gauge in the middle- now it runs nice and cool and sits inbetween the 2 lower lines on the cold end) and a new distributor cap and rotor. i picked up the parts(aftermarket) at an oreillys down the street.
i heard you stress in the video to use original mitsubishi parts only.
is a radiator, dist cap and/or rotor something that should strictly be original mitsubishi parts? or is that more applied to engine components like timing, water pump, etc (stuff pretty much directly on the engine)
    please let me know, thanks.
this video was very informative 👍

I'll have to get it apart to see for sure where it's coming from but I'm 95% sure it from somewhere behind the lower belt cover.

Going to do my first timing belt/tensioners/water pump since getting my 420a Eclipse. The chilton manual says to set the engine to TDC, then 1/2 BTDC. I'm just a bit confused on this. I know how to set it to top dead (checking compression on cyl 1 as well as the marking on the crankshaft), but am confused about setting 1/2 notch before dead center...(mainly because the chilton manual has you doing it after you've removed the old belt.. that doesn't seem right to me!)

Good tips most of them; thumbs up! But tell me: what is GENUINE MITSU PARTS? Because now'a days Mitsu and other brands don't make their own parts; no car brand does. They buy from partdealers, and those contracts last for say 3 years, then the "brand buying department" ask for new contracts from many, many suppliers.

Quick diagnosis found that the timing belt was very slack between the camshafts. I am going to replace the timing belt and retime the engine after a (hopefully) successful compression check.

Please help man, I did a timing belt 2003 Galant ES 2.4L and it won’t start. Tries to turn over but won’t fire up. Everything seems in line. Crank shaft sensor got wet while taking the old water pump off, but other than that, everything looks good. Could wrong timing be a cause? just watched factory video first, great tip for balance shaft, but the question I have is why in the factory video it tell you to lock tensioner 1:00 and you say 5:30 tension counter clockwise. verified by 2 fsm's. also gap between plunger and tensioner is 3.8-4.5mm but you say pin movement in dampner. not criticism just a question. isn't that the purposes of the special tool to slack the hydrolic tensioner? don't want to set it up wrong and it seems like you have done it before lol

I've removed the balancer/pulley, my manual says just pull it off. but it's wedged on about as tight as the balancer/pulley was so I'll kinda lost. beings I'll be needing it again hammering isn't an option even though I considered it long and hard I'd just like to remove and inspect it, but can't seem to find any information on how to exactly. any suggestions you may have I'm up to trying, I don't want my motor to be trashed over such a small piece but I can't be delayed indefinitely because of a small piece. thanks for to taking the time to read my post.

hi there..i believed my lancer's balance shaft is out of alignment together with the oil pump after seeing this video. someone did my timing belt job 3 yrs ago and after getting it back (until now) my engine got louder at high rpm and has very slight vibration when on idle. do u think the loud engine noise has to do with the oil pump or 2nd balance shaft not properly aligned? a respond will be greatly appreciated.

I'm also trying to change components like the timing belt because im uncertain if the previous owner had any major services done for the truck. (although they kept it in good shape im not absolutely sure if they changed any original components.)
i was always told don't fix what isn't broken, but im just trying to avoid the cost of neglecting to change something ahead of time. id hate to chance it for another 10, or 20k miles. (its low, 88k, but that doesn't mean its all in tip top shape. she runs nice, but i know she can use some tlc to get her sounding really great.)
plus i like working on my truck/car on weekends, getting familiar with it for my own benefit. (i used to have a 94 850turbo and a 92 accord to tinker with)
And also learning to work on 90s mitsubishis- I'm considering picking up a 90s montero since its all covered in the same chiltons and haynes repair manuals, and are pretty much alike.
with all that crap^^^ being said, I'm thinkin of changing the timing belt.
generally, kits online usually come with a new tensioner and that second smaller belt. im sticking to original mitsubishi parts on this one like you mentioned, but is there anything else i should change while im at it? water pump? any other components? things to look at and check while stuff is taken apart? any gaskets or seals or any specific lubes or applications? please let me know, any kinda knowledge on this helps. thanks again for posting the vid, really helpful. 🤘👍👍

Sean Patrick water pump has to be changed. I usually replace the seals on the cam, crank, oil pump, and balance shafts as well. Finally just because it requires removal of the timing belt to do, I throw in a new crankshaft sensor as well. Also these are wear parts. You change them before they fail otherwise you risk engine damage

I'm replacing the serpentine and timing belts on a 2009 Mitsubishi Eclipse. How do I get genuine Mitsubishi parts? I do not have a Mitsubishi dealer in my town.

The lip on the smaller belts/balancer tensioner pulley goes to the out side or away from block. Just a bit hard to see in video since it a small lip.
