- The hit 1963 Broadway musical She Loves Me is based on Hungarian playwright Mikóz László's Parfuemerie, along with three other cinematic renditions - You’ve Got Mail (1998) starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, In the Good Old Summertime (1949) with Judy Garland and Van Johnson, and The Shop Around the Corner (1940) with Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullavan. The story follows two shop employees, Georg and Amalia, who bicker constantly and seem to hate each other. Unbeknownst to the other, they both begin letter correspondence through an advertisement for lonely hearts and fall in love with their anonymous “Dear Friend.”
At this point in the musical, Amalia takes a personal day from work because her “Dear Friend” with whom she had arranged a first meeting seemed to have stood her up. Georg knows the truth - he realized she was his “Dear Friend” upon seeing her at the restaurant the night before - but does not reveal this to her. Instead, he brings her vanilla ice cream the next day while she is home "sick" and makes up a story of how after she left the restaurant, a man who must have been her date showed up looking for her. Georg mischievously throws in a few details about the fictitious man’s appearance - including his rotund shape and hairless head - but assures Amalia that he nevertheless seemed a good old fellow. After Georg leaves her house, Amalia begins to write a letter of apology to her “Dear Friend” for the misunderstanding, but her focus keeps straying back to Georg and his kind offering of vanilla ice cream.
