Your azalea's looking much better by August, so looks like the more drainage did the trick. The other thing, I recommend you get a soil pH tester kit and check a sample of that soil. Azaleas need acidic soil and won't push out vigorous roots in neutral soil. And in alkaline they will decline and slowly die! Cat litter I bought in bulk here last year was slightly alkaline so I keep that away from the azaleas and camelia (also an acidophile). But clearly not all cat litter is the same, so worth testing.
Thats a good point. when I first got it I had ericaceous compost in the mix. BUT when I repotted it last year into the celebrations pot, I think I just used half the soil it was already in, half what what ever was near by. Thats probably why it did nothing. too wet and to alkaline. My manic rush made me not care lol. The mix its in now has the ericaceous compost, so it should be fine PH wise, but i should really test it to be sure, you never know what these cat litters are up to.
Wow, maybe your best video yet in my opinion. Excellent long term display of something that begins as is absolutely NOT bonsai and by the end is much closer. Great eye with the branch selection. Have you ever seen John Geangeles (100% positive I spelled that wrong) videos? He has some great vids of turning azaleas (probably shimpaku) from nursery stock into shohin. He hasn’t posted anything of substance in a long time but his old stuff is great. Cheers man.
Cheers. John Geanangel is a boss!! his old videos are great stuff. he has done some great stuff with the old azaleas he found (ive another azalea that i want to grow out for ages and then cut back like he does) he also did a video a few months ago of his garden. absolutely stunning!
Back Garden Bonsai I can’t believe I would even imply that you hadn’t heard of him...of course you have! Yeah man, absolute boss. I wish he was more active.
You’ve done pretty well there lad. I like that you had confidence to prune and go ahead with your vision. I haven’t seen how it looks now in 2024 but I bet it’s mega
In Spain we don't get these big tubs of chocolates, I need to stock up on all the cadbury stuff in the airport each time I come back here lol. None this year with the pandemic and all! 😷😥
when you watch my videos, it gives me access to your webcam. I see what youre all up to then just make my next video based on that.... true story lol Also great to hear you both got one. they are nice trees
My Azalia was bought as a 'ready made' bonsai in a small, final display pot. Its clearly not a final tree and has many years before it's a specimen.... I plan to repot after flowering this summer (if it flowers). How did you make your soil? I plan to put it in a larger pot as the display one is not right for now so I need advice on soil before repotting
Hi, I accidentally scratched some bark off my azalea I bought from nursery during repotting. I covered the area with spagnum moss and kanuma as it was just above the roots. Will this be ok?
Hi, Id just use rain water or tap water (just put it in a bottle and leave it for 24hrs, so things like chloride can evaporate) I wouldn't start buying water just for a plant.
Its not so much cat litter you should focus on. The cat litter i use is made from 100% "molar clay". This is what you need to look for if you are buying the same thing. It also comes as like oil spill absorbent. doenst matter what its used for, so long as its just molar clay. Although with azeleas you want an acidic soil, so you need things like Kanuma. i just mix ericaceous compost with the molar clay and some perlite to get the soil acidic but also loose for airataion, its not perfect but it seems to be okay.
Hello I am getting lovely tips from you on Azelia, thank you for this. I would like to know from you that I can mulch this plant by rocks when temperature crosses 25 degree in Northern India?
@@BackGardenBonsai just want to protect my Azelias from scorching sun when temperatures crosses 30 degrees. Please suggest best cover for soil from sun dry heat.
If it’s 25-30C your taking about. So very hot. I’d just move the trees into shade. Or build some sort of shade cloth over them so they are protected from the hottest parts of the day. You will also just need to water more often if the pots are still drying out fast. 👍

Wow, Mr Dave with the fact bomb! I never would have though of that. I guess the real question is “is chocolate basic or alkaline?”

Nice save, that's shaping up really nicely
Cheers Darren. Hopefully it keeps pushing forward 👍

Nice progress. Good catch on watching the clues for the root issue. Looks like it is loving the new soil.
Cheers. It seems happy so far, Hopefully that will be the end of its troubles.

I love the pot...nice canopy on tgis one. Cheers 😎🍺🍺
The pot was better when I first got it lol. it gave me more joy
FIRST! Lol now I'll watch the vid 😁

Beat me!!!
I knew it was a UK thing! the rest of the world is missing out!! you'll have to get them shipped out
I’ve found Azaleas like “well” draining soil, and falter is kept too wet. Your tree is looking good. Like your design/style.
Cheers. they definitely like it free draining. This one is a lot happier now with the new soil
That beautiful tree deserve a nice pot.
Yes, it will get one soon :)
Looking really good Ian 👌👌
Cheers J. its slowly getting there
That is funny you post today a video about a Azalea.
Yesterday I bought a Azalea in my local shop ;)
@David Jobe me too just this week on Thursday. I think Ian must be stalking us 😁

Blast from the past, but it coming up to azalea time so I'm catching up with old content. Great effort especially with the choc-tub.
cheers. those chocolate tubs are like the perfect training pots!! haha
Love azalea

it will be fine. I wouldnt even have covered it. it will just heal over. even if it was a huge gouge it would be fine.
Need drainage and moisture retention. Bark mulch + peat or moss.
Hi
Thank you for sharing! I just got one but I am a little worried about the watering. Can I used bottled water?
