    As a returner of serve, being able to return into the alley is awesome to keep you opponent volley guy honest and not poach too much. But don't over do these, since as the volley guy, sure, the returner may try to hit down the alley, but these are low-percentage shots, so be my guest :)
    Finally, as always, good thought provoking video, keep up the good work Ryan.

    Nice video! I think the best part of it is that you acknowledge that tennis is played differently by "non-professional" or recreational players than it is by professional players and calls for different strategies and tactics. I watch tons of tennis videos on youtube, but with many of them, I end up saying (to myself) "but it just doesn't happen that way in the real world". Kudos!

    this is really great! My only problem is when I serve the ball usually doesn't go where I was intending it to go, so having a strategy like this would probably happen very seldom. 😅

      @@riskydigitsta1794 The most important thing is to train your eye to track the ball from the toss, through the hit, in the air. It requires a lot of practice and self-enforcement to actually do that. Once you do however, you'd be surprised how much time you actually have to return the serve, no matter what type of serve it is. With that extra time, you'll know whether the ball will kick side-ways, in which case you need to compensate your angle so it doesn't fly out or to the volley guy, whether it's a short serve, a long kick-serve etc. It helps even against tremendous fast flat serves.

      @@4justiceagainstevil Are there any tips/drills on how to better eye track the ball?

    • @4justiceagainstevil
      @4justiceagainstevil Рік тому

      @@karolxdddddd My no. 1 trick is that when the server prepares to serve I literally tell myself "watch the ball, watch the ball" as an aid to help myself ignore my partner and anything else around me. And my no. 1 drill is the short-court warm ups, where we stand around the service line and exchange balls, and I work on returning solid top spins from both backhand and forehands, which requires training my eyes on the ball through hitting it. In this situation the ball is slower, and while I do this also on every ground stroke, it's here where I consciously work on it.

    So if your partner is serving out wide, do you move toward the center?

  • @hafadaze9046

    I’d rather watch my alley because at least if goes down the middle my partner can get it but not the other way round. The only time I’d ever come to the middle is if I know the opponents return is weak or he’s hitting a slice or dropshot then I’d go in for the kill

    Good point but not needed. Knowing The proper balance to have when receiving the ball is what determines if you will get to the ball in time

  • @lowellwalters

    You've had a few videos like this and I think they make are overly cautious. It is not my experience that these returns are pulled down the alley. If the returner is 3.0 or higher, they will get the ball cross court unless they decide in advance to go down the line or the net man poaches early. Most of the time, the net man should be extra aggressive on serves to the returners backhand bc the returner is less able to change directions after starting the return. In these videos, high level returners were able to do something that sub-5.0 players do not normally do.

    • @2MinuteTennis
      @2MinuteTennis  2 роки тому

      I completely agree with you on being aggressive on opponents bh return. But I think it’s a smarter idea to be aggressive when on the ad side against a right handed returner. That’s when the poach is best used.

      Here’s an example of when I think it’s best to poach against opponent’s backhand. ua-cam.com/video/pKNocx82eQI/v-deo.html

      @@2MinuteTennis thanks for the replies. I have not watched the video yet (although I think I saw it when it first came out), but I must admit that in my match today, 1 guy hit 3 backhand returns from the duece side right down the line. Maybe I just hadn't realized it. And maybe your point is that you should not do a "full poach" where you end on the other 1/2 of the court. Would you agree that a serve down the T on either side warrants the net man taking a step towards the middle?

  • @ianmackinlay8925
    @ianmackinlay8925 2 роки тому +3

    For high level tennis players all these serves were short and NOT even accurately down the T by high level standards and that is where the fault lies. In these short inaccurate cases the line pass becomes a viable possibility. I completely disagree with this advice tactically generally. If your partner can lace a serve more accurately down the T you should impose centrally as his partner imo. Ex pro international player commenting. Maybe your advice works for club level players 🤷🏽‍♂️
