    Josh,
I'm glad I found your video. The Turbinehead on my DC23 just took a dive, and you mentioned that Dyson would replace it if you were the original owner and it was under five years old. Luckily I'm a receipt-keeper; I checked it and found mine was about 3.5 years old. So I gave Dyson support a call. I still had to go through their troubleshooting steps on the phone, even though I'd followed the steps on their website. The end result is that they are sending me a new Turbinehead assembly, at no cost, and I should have it in less than seven business days. That's awesome, because I wasn't looking forward to forking out $100 for a new one!
Thanks again for the great video.
    -Jeff

Yay! husband has been wanting to clean the canister of our DC39 for ages and he will now feel justified in doing this. We vacuum up huge quantities of dust from 3 children and pets, have had a couple of models of dyson, DC39 good but still quite loud, quieter would be good! Thanks for the video!

Thank you so much. I love that you explained everything so quickly because most UA-cam ''How To'' videos are too slow and the way you did it was perfect. I just rewound bits that I needed to understand in more depth. Now my DC23 is super clean, but wet. I can't wait till it dries and I can finally vacuum to my hearts content without the smell of dust from the canister. You did a great job!!!

Hi Josh, that video was SO helpful, I was to lazy to look for the detail manual to break down and clean my dc23. Thanks for explaining my you were talking SOOOOO FAST, at one point I thought that you may have been on something (Hahahaha!), you get points for cramming so much into 14 minutes, I must say I really enjoy my dc23 it has been a great help as I'm a double amputee (half right foot, left leg below knee) and as I live alone and I'm wheelchair bound this product has been an outstanding piece of equipment in helping me keep my home clean, thanks to Dyson for making a great product and thanks to you for taking the time to break things down for people like me who at times can be a little lazy, keep up the great work...

This video is awesome. So much info in under 15 minutes, I really appreciate the time you took in research and set up. Along with your personal opinions.. I seen your video about 5 months ago. Then a week later I purchased my first Dyson. I got the "DC37 Turbinehead Animal" and I can honesty say I have no regrets.. So much power and functions. Last month I even gave away my old 3 vacuums. My handheld, Swiffer Vac and my old baged vacuum. (I found myself never using them anymore) also before I seen your video I went though 3 vacuums. to my full disappointment I returned them a week later.. Again Thank You for this review. I love my Dyson.

Thanks. I have a 10 yr old Dyson DC07 Animal. It still runs, but I have been eyeing the following features on commercials: ball, lower profile, potentially quieter than the 07 and the tangle free turbine tool. I had initially considered DC41, but realized after ordering the flat out tool, that either I keep my DC07 or go for the DC39 I appreciate the demonstration on the flat out tool - got one Wednesday. Looks like DC39 will be coming home soon.

Nice video. I've had a DC23 Animal for several years so here are my comments on actually using the thing. The turbinehead clogs constantly. Even something like a bit of dry cat food or breakfast cereal will clog that sucker. I spend about 20% of my vacuuming time unclogging that stupid head, and that's after removing loose objects and such. It clogs on animal hair. It clogs when the wind blows three states away. When it isn't clogged, it does work well on carpet. I find it to be only blah on hard floors. Have to pre or post-sweep with a broom to really get the dust. The dustbin IS flimsy. The bottom broke off mine and necessitated replacing the whole bin, which is at least not expensive. Another clean way to empty it is to put it inside a trash bag so it's somewhat sealed inside while you shake it to empty. It will need emptying a lot as it doesn't hold much. HEPA filter works great and I find I don't actually need to clean it as often as they say, and when I do, the water is never dirty. So I like this a lot. The machine itself attracts filth due to static charge so it needs to be wiped down monthly or so.

My Dyson dc39 turbo head would slow down when I tried to vacuum but would spin just fine when held off the carpet. The filter inside the canister was perfectly clean. This video showed me how to open the canister, and when I cleaned off the mesh screen, the turbo started working again. Thank you very much; I was so afraid of breaking it, but your video showed me how to open it up.

Excellent video...very helpful! You know a lot more than the sales people at Best Buy. That's why I didn't open the box for my DC39 yellow till I read some reviews. I had the Dyson Upright Animal that we hated to use!! More than enough power, but it needed to be cleaned after using it every times. Container always got stuck/clogged with (no pets) hair and dust. My wife has long hair... Had to go out into the garage to empty it twice during each cleaning. I'll try this DC39...if it's a problem, I have 45 days to bring it back to Best Buy for a full refund.
Thanks again for all the info you gave and demo in a short time!

Question about vacuums: The brush bar is a critical element in loosening tiny dust in carpets and matresses. How do you compare the turbine brush-bars vs. the motorized brush bars? (I think Dyson calls them Motor heads).

Hi Josh, that's a really great video. Just a quick tip on the trigger head - you need to hold the button down for a little longer so that the valve can fully actuate. That will be why it's not always switching. You ca see the valve move if you watch the head closely whilst pressing the trigger down.

I already bought the Dyson DC39 Multifloor. I did play around with the upright type at the store and find it FEEL bulkier than the DC39... i was really surprise because the DC39 look bigger... The ball wheel and the other three wheel really help to move the vacuum body seamlessly...

    Josh,
You're a great man to explain the workings of the Dyson DC39; a top class display. I bought it first and then checked in here later. To take off the canister, press the grey button on the top of the ball. To empty the canister, click press on the red button on the handle of the canister once it it separated from the ball. Click on the grey button to pull the clear plastic away from the handle. Demo:2:30 to 2:36 and 3:41+ on the video. You may want to wash out and then dry the dusty parts on the canister, but don't run the vacuum while they are damp inside. Hope that helps!

Thanks for the great video. My mother recently bought a Dyson in April 2013. It went for a whooping 700 EUR. Very expensive... However that said, l learned a great deal from your video and wish l had seen it before l "encouraged" her to purchase it. My mother has a lot of carpets which need a lot of cleaning.
My mother previously used a Miele vacuum cleaner that was unable to clean the dust out. We had sent some of the carpets to a "professional" cleaner who was supposed to have treated them with wool wash and clean water, alas the company had not changed the water in its pools and had placed our carpets at the bottom of the pile, which resulted in them getting far more dirtier than before sending them in adding a great deal of weight to each carpet. Some carpets were raw - they continue to smell to the animals who gratefully shed their wool for them. I would count that my mother has around 15 large carpets (over 5M2) collected over the years. We tend to go through vacuum cleaners quickly. Most vacuum cleaners last 2-3 years as a result. To remove dust traditionally we would suspend the carpets in the air, on a very strong wash line and beat the dust out with Dutch dust beaters, however that harmed the carpet and in fact created many a dust cloud that temporarily dislodged the dust, which would then return back into the carpet. Also where we live is very dusty and dry, and the winds are dust laden. Resulting in us keeping our windows closed at all times. A vacuum cleaner in these conditions has a completely different role to play in household chores.
We only use the vacuum cleaner to clean the carpets. I encouraged her to purchase a very expensive vacuum cleaner, which she resisted at first. The Dyson DC37 Animal Turbine, included most of the accessories when purchased. I got her to work on the machine, and we resulted in "trying" to clean a modern Iranian Nain carpet which she had purchased recently. This was one of the carpets that was supposedly "cleaned". Over the course of 1 month, collecting the dust of that carpet alone and weighing it, we removed about 4 KG of extra soil and dirt. The carpet is now much thinner and lighter than before. We are increasingly adding more and more carpets to be cleaned by the Dyson, with the hope that we can remove much of the accumulated dirt and grim that a normal high end bagged vacuum could not. She is currently vacuuming the dust, grim and dirt out of the carpets, and is always pleased at the results. The Dyson does clean well. My aunt has a cheaper version of the Dyson - an American version in fact, which also cleans quite well. However, she uses it as a general purpose cleaner. I can't make a comparison, but l would say, that the Dyson was worth the money. I learned a great deal from your video, but l would disagree with you. In Europe there are far higher end vacuums for cleaning that can be purchased in the UK. My next one will probably be one of those. For now the Dyson is going a smashing job.

Great video. Tons of information in 13 minutes.
DC39 is much quieter in my opinion. It also has more suction, but could have bit more. What I mean by that is, both have under 300 airwats which is average compared to other canister vacs. DC23 sound is also very irritating and high pitched.
But end of the day I would buy DC39. Enough suction, efficient cyclone technology, great turbine head (much better than DC23) and quality.
And I have to say it looks just amazing.

Many people who don't own Dysons will enjoy your video, but many current owners will use it as a 'reminder' of how to clean their filters, etc. Slow down just a little bit. I like the Dyson canisters because they are among the few that are able to get a spinning brush bar in small spaces, like carpeting 4 feet under a bed. I can put the canister on my bed and use the Triggerhead to clean the few inch area between the bed and my wall. That is something an upright can't really do, unless you use the Mini Turbinehead on an upright Dyson. Some Electrolux canisters also have a motorized brush bar, but the heads are larger and use bags you need to keep buying.

  • @dunlopjoshua
    @dunlopjoshua  11 років тому

What separates them is that the DC39 is quieter and pulls along a little more easily. The DC39 Triggerhead is slimmer so it fits in more places than the DC23 Turbinehead. The DC39 Triggerhead maintains suction better with a pivoting base, is made of carbon fiber, and disassembles more completely. The DC39 has 275 air watts of suction, 25% more than theDC23’s 220 air watts. The DC39 canister assembly takes less time to wash out and is slightly larger at .53 gallons vs .44 gallons in the DC23.

My parents have been using their Rainbow D4 since 1987 and it's only needed a motor replacement, duct tape, and a new side clip. It is powerful, durable, and has a lot of extra features you can buy like a carpet cleaner, spot remover, super mop, and you can use it as a wet vac. It is kind of annoying to fill and dump water out of it every time you vacuum. It is also a pain to carry up stairs since it is heavy. It is also $1,500-2,000. You can upgrade your Dyson every 5 years and still spend less

  • @dunlopjoshua
    @dunlopjoshua  11 років тому +1

In my opinion, when you purchase a Dyson, you pay a bit more because:
    1. It can use a lot of extensions for various purposes
    2. It can be disassembled and cleaned without tools
    3. It has a longer expected life than most other bagless vacuums. (Though it is likely shorter than some high end bagged vacuums like the metal Kirby or metal Sanitaire or the water based Rainbow my family has used for 25+ years.)
    4. It is more likely to survive drops down half a flight of stairs and still work fine.

Both are used exactly the same way. The only real difference may be that to turn the brush bar off, the DC23 requires a little more effort because you have to pull a button out on the Turbinehead. The Triggerhead on the DC39 lets you turn off the brush bar using a button on the handle of the wand, but you may need to click it a few times to get it to work. The filter on the DC39 will need to be washed out more frequently though, but cleaning the bin of the DC39 takes a little less time.

I always liked my Dyson DC26 "City" It's like a DC39 but a lot smaller with slightly less power. Great For smaller places like an apt.

Thank you. Very informative. How often do I replace the beater brush bar?

Very well done, helpful video. Thank you! I have the same problem as you with the trigger on the DC39 not working well. (It works maybe one out of every 10 or 20 times.) Other than that, I very much like the vacuum. Has anyone figured out a trick to make the trigger work more often than not?

If you're on a budget, consider giving a refurb DC23 a whirl for $206. You can resell it on Craigslist for $175.
You can get a refurb DC39 for $298 if you already know you want the little extras, like the quieter volume (especially if you have pets that pee when they hear loud noises), slightly better suction, easier maintenance cleaning, better Triggerhead performance, etc.
Be aware that some refurbished Animal models do not include the Mini-Turbine head included with a new Animal version.

Great video, thank you! Turbine head is broken. Should i replace it with the tangle free turbine or buy a new turbine head. (I already have a mini turbine). My model is the dc32 silver purple.

I like 1. the Dyson DC23 (Great for small spaces, stairs, and corners and for recovering things you didn't mean to vacuum.)
    2. The Miele S7 (great for large carpets and has the best HEPA air filtration but not as many extensions and higher cost).
3-4. The SEBO (bagged) and Rainbow lines (water) for longevity and reliability. A vacuum store can do demos and you can see what, if any, extensions are available. I like the Rainbow and Dyson DC23 & 39 because their brush bars fit under furniture.

I was looking at the DC37 Canada (DC39 US) and the DC23 Motor-head as all my old vacuums always had a power head so not to sure about the air driven one. I live in a condo so mostly hardwood floors with area rugs so hopping the DC39 won't have a problem on them. The DC23 compacts away nicely but the DC39 is about the same size as my Kenmore canister vacuum and it fits fine in my closet. I was also looking at a DC46 but it's so tiny and the DC39 has more power. SO watching your video I leaning towards the DC39 as what I understand the 23 is a older model. BTW the DC37 is $649 Canadian ... not like in the US .

I must congratulate you on making the first UA-cam video over 5 minutes that I actually watched start-to-finish. Although I still don't know which to get! Do I spend more for the 39 and hope it lasts longer or just get the refurbished 23 for literally half the price???

The uprights may have better agitation because of a belt driven brush bar instead of the air driven one the canisters use which can slow down when there is resistance. That may just mean mean you need an extra pass every so often with a canister. But if you live in a place with carpeting in hard to reach places an upright head can't easily fit, like the sides of your bed, stairs, etc. and you want a spinning brush bar instead of an extension with bristles, one of these canisters may make sense.

On the DC39 the fine mesh filter inside the container can and should be removed and cleaned. All the dirt on the inside will not come out by just rinsing. Plus I use my half inch and one inch pipe cleaners to get dirt out from inside the cyclonic holes along with a tooth brush, it's full of dirt too.

I'd guess they would have a similar life expectancy. If you're on a budget, consider a DC23 from Amazon for $180. You can resell it on Craigslist for about that.
You can get a used DC39 for $260 if you already know you want the little extras, like the quieter volume, easier maintenance cleaning, better Triggerhead performance, etc.
    No 5 year warranties though.
Most refurbished Animal models do not include a Mini-Turbine head (or Tangle-Free turbine tool) included with a new Animal version.

I had the small DC26, and got rid of it because it had poor suction (160 air watts) and poor pickup compared to the DC23 (220 air watts) and the DC39 (275 air watts). The turbinehead on the DC26 required cleaning after almost every other use because hair and stuff would wrap around the thinner brush bar. The canister was so small, I had to empty it out after vacuuming 2/3 of my 1350 square foot apartment.

Excellent information.. I am in the search for a vaccum and I wanted to know If I should just got with the Shark® Rotator™ Professional Lift-Away 3-in-1 Vacuum or the Dyson DC37 (in canada) (DC39 in US)...
I have more of hard floors at home and just two carpets, but since it is black it gets crazy dirty.
I am trying to justify the price difference between the dyson and the shark..
Also I have a lot of steps...
    Do suggest...
