    Finally someone who has brown algae! I've done water changes, lowered lights, cleaned off sides and plants (as much as I could) but I have soil and I think way too much so it just keeps coming right back. No to mention the filter getting so dirty after two days that the waters color changes to a tan-ish color. I'm thinking about taking it down and starting over. Idk what else to do.

      Brown Algae is actually not an algae at all but a diatom. Things like not enough light can actually trigger it! Along with that, high nitrates can also be a cause too. I found a lot of good information about it online that helped my brown algae issues.

    Love your content 👍 all of your tanks don’t have lids. I’ve read on a lot of sites that rimless lose a lot to evaporation, and that when you regularly top up the tank you can over mineralise you’re tank if adding plain dechlorinated tap water. what would you say is best to combat this as I love rimless look but a bit wary to lose the lid and my water parameters slowly get worse over time without me knowing. Really hope you reply 🤩

  • @TheOpelkoenjas
    @TheOpelkoenjas 4 роки тому

    I can honestly say that I never encountered the brown algae issue in all the years that I had aquariums (30 years). Some green algae, yes but nothing out of the abnormal scale and just an amount that you'll find in EVERY creek/stream/river/..., and only once I had a bit of hair algae, but that is quickly solved with adding more plants and reducing the hours and strength of the lights (never did a water change after I noticed that one, I just removed it with a toothbrush, dimmed the lights and that was it). TIP: when setting up a new tank, only use 50% strength of the light you intend to use afterwards, and reduce the hours considerably in the beginning. Let the biological life - specially the plants - in your tank get used to it's new environment before you (slowly) crank everything up. Oh and don't add too many fish at once, since your biological filter media won't be able to coop with it, hence your water parameters will go absolutely bonkers, resulting in all sorts of undesirable algae growing all over the place (the natural balance is gone) and even possibly in the death of fish.
    Little detail: I only do 20% waterchanges every 3-4 months, if even that much. No Co2 at all, no special plant soil (I use quarts sand and/or quarts gravel only), but I have good and adequate filtration (Tetra EX 1200 Plus, and two medium sized HOB's to put in some extra biomedia, filterfloss and also, in my case, peat granules), lots of plants with proper (liquid) fertilization - I never use root tabs, I have low/normal fish stock and every month I do an elaborated water testing, not just PH, GH and KH >> which I do every 2 weeks. Oh and I use rainwater from our 40+ years old, 6000L underground concrete rainwater tank. I don't use tap water at all anymore for two years now, since I don't trust it for one bit anymore after I started literally smelling the chlorine in it. But the other reason I only use rainwater also is that, this is an old house built in 1977 and it still has old copper waterlines. And you know what that means.
    And I often see people with cheap LED lights - without a dimmer - that have way too many blue LED's and way too bright white LED's. Blue light enhances algae growth as well as too strong (cold) white light. And something else I see A LOT of people do: getting an LED light that is as long as their tank (or close to). There's no need for that at all, in my opinion. Fish like a bit of shade too, even goldfish. For example, on my 150cm (300L) South American "biotope" I only use a 30W, 99cm LED (Fluval Aquasky 2.0 Bluetooth). And I NEVER put it on full blast (about an average of about 70% all LED's combined), even with the water having that typical amazon dark(er) water. The plants and fish love it, and pesty algae absolutely hate it. For people who are already using a cheap LED light that "feels to bright": put some floating plants in your tank to create shade. Not only will it help with more stable water parameters, it will also give your fish a much desired place to retreat in/under when they want.
    Cheers and happy tanking!

    Hah, I was just coming on here to ask you if that was Ember!
    Story time!
    I had a goldfish for about 2 and 1/2 years (Man, that guy got big!) that I named Blackie. He had a mostly black body, with probably just two or three little spots of orange and white. Just a beautiful, dark fish. About a year or so after owning him he had no black, at all, and it only came through every now and then on random scales after that...
    ..it is still painful to think about how many times I had to explain that goldfish change colors throughout the course of their lives & that he USED TO be black to people who came over and asked why my goldfish was named Blackie. No promises, but I'll probably never name a fish based on its colors again because of how *annoying* that was.

And here in Pandemic Central (aka Los Angeles), I couldn’t live without it. Just got a beep from AMZ. My new iPhone tripod adapter and 18 tins of kippers have just arrived. New topic: my plants And some hitchhiker bladder snails I got 3 months ago (AMZ) are the last thing I added to my tank. Yesterday, I noticed some duckweed. Today I noticed more duckweed. Has it been hiding for 3 months or does the stuff just spontaneously generate?

    I love your channel and the "keep it simple" mood... also the fact that u didnt do a sellout for any gift which arrived because of your success. but in this Chihiros case i think you did it wrong. these lights are expensive, this is the newest generation and even If they didnt pay you for showing them, i think you could give it more view then "its just a light"... the design for tanks with lids, the mobile arm for maintenance etc... You havent to do a 20min sellout vid... but a bit more will be fair enough for free gifts. greetz
