Serve myths debunked: Former Top 100 ATP Pro, Jeff Salzenstein, is exposing 3 common myths that could be crippling your serve potential. Most players make at least 1 of these 3 mistakes... Do you? goo.gl/gpHjEd
This is probably one of the most important serve videos I've ever watched. As a player who uses the pinpoint stance, is it possible to get the same amount of weight onto the back foot as a platform stance player?
I had a bad habit of bending my front (left) knee inwards before bending it out. I think that's what caused my knee injury after doing it over a hundred times in a weekend. I'm confident that getting a good hip turn and pushing it a bit forward will ensure that my knee bends forward and my serve will be transformed!
I've seen all of your serve videos and they are great!. I'm a good 4.5 player and do all of the things you recommend but where it all breaks down for me is with the toss consistency. Especially in very tight matches. Would love to see a video with tips on that. Consistent placement and height.
@@TennisEvolution Thxs for the reply. I usually toss in front of me slightly towards the net post and when I'm doing it right I'm able to hit the ball at the moment it pauses before coming down at full stretch but when it starts acting out for some reason I toss it higher and many times gets away from me towards the outside. I try to keep the tossing arm straight and bring it up without "throwing" it but I find myself chasing it. It messes up my balance, my timing, speed, placement...pretty much everything. Btw, I hold the ball with 3 fingers (Thumb, index and middle). It's obviously a mental thing and it's also embarrassing having to catch your toss multiple times during a serving game. If it gets too bad I usually go to a 3/4 serve. I can definitely do a video. Where would I send it?
Need a slo mo of 7:40 or 8:40 great lesson Jeff. I recorded myself practice serving and I'm guilty of a few mistakes you discussed here. Thank you again
Essential information! Every time I have questions about my own game, it seems like Tennis Evolution is here with a new video to help with that same problem.
Completely agree the pinpoint should be a fast motion, like Kyrgios does. That's why I'm trying to switch to platform since my toss is medium to high. I've been struggling with this lately since I always tend to revert back to pinpoint.
@@TennisEvolution Yes, for a righty serving in the ad court, I noticed when watching pros that the right leg seems to kick out more sideways than behind on a second serve. Is that really happening and why.
This is a really great video Jeff. Liking the new format and presentation. Wondered if you have some tips or could do a video on when to change to a different serve stance. I have always used a step-up pin point stance and have a powerful 110+ serve but it lacks consistency. When I change to platform I just lose all rhythm and timing and the upper part of the swing feel out of sync and loses it effectiveness. Any pointers will be greatly appreciated and please keep up with the videos, they are a great help!
Thanks Jeff. I'm the European equivalent of a 5.0+ male player in my mid forties and I'm right in the process of tweaking my serve as I hardly use my legs and it's still a pretty decent serve. Your tips clicked for me and I will try this out on the practice court. My only concern is that by accentuating the hip movement in the way you show wouldn't I be prone to hip injury faster?
very interesting. a question: what do you mean with "power comes from the ground"? I guess you mean power to push up comes from the leg muscles and they work first bending then pushing, and for those movements we need our feet stable on the ground.
I think you are right Enrico. This is the reason why Jeff suggests It is better to place the feet in a platform stance. It’ s the same cinetic consequence you produce when you try executing a vertical jump. Before jumping you bend the knees in order to transfer part of your body weight to the ground, in order to receive back from the ground the same energy. For those who are not English mother tongue, like me, push, thrust and drive are synonymous in this video.
Hey Enrico, thanks for your comment. Yes, you use the ground to create power. What other type of videos would you like to see from me in the near future? Jeff
The turning of the hips won’t be a problem if your stance is already more to the side (front foot not pointing at the post, but at the side wall). If your foot is like that, then your hips r already forced to turn and that’s why professional players use that stance.
Hi Jeff. Thanks a lot for your lessons, for your advices - they are intelligible and helpful. The only problem is I haven't got enough practice (usually 3 times a week for 2 hours each) to fix technic gaps. I use to do huge amount of swings, shadow movements in my small apartments instead but there isn't ball flying towards me so I can't make corrections in timing etc. What should I do? I love tennis but it hurts me...
Can you say something about the timing of the leg drive with respect to the swing? I have the idea that you time the upward motion to create a sling shot effect for the racquet, creating a deeper racquet drop for more dynamic tension to fling the racquet up.
Great video Jeff! I am struggling with using my legs more and I am squatting A LOT. I just need to get in the habit of turning my hips and shoulders in the service motion. It’ll probably be hard to adjust to at first but I will stick with it! Again great video :)
Jeff, That's exactly the kind of video i needed to understand what to do with my legs in the serve , where the weight is supposed to be , and why i feel unbalanced sometimes and that hip thing , that's golden , no matter what i tried , i had that curved back and had no way to straighten it without falling to the ground , thank you , you're fantastic , that's why you're the Serve Surgeon ;)
Hello Jeff, I have a question that has bothered me for a long time and hope that you can help me. During trophy position, how do I use leg drive to make body then shoulder rotation? Cause during ball contact, my body is actually facing toward the net, an I found it hard to use leg drive to make my body turn toward the net. I hope you can help me solve this, thank you!
Jeff, so what is the timing on the hip turn, knee bend, and tail tuck relative to the toss? I've seen videos of Pete Sampras where it looks like he tosses first and then rotates and bends his knees but others look like they blend all those moves together.
Hey Dennis. It varies from player to player. What other type of videos would you like to see from me in the near future? Spot on. Squatting is a major power leak in the serve. Remember always that serving should basically be just a throwing motion upward, not a preparation for jumping straight up from the ground. And who throws anything (anywhere) by squatting?! Wake up, folks. What looks elegant, smooth and fluid is usually the right way to do it.
Hey Jeff, What percent of a pro's serve speed is attributed to leg drive (frosting) and what percent is non-leg (cake)? Just looking for a ballkpark. I've had 4 knee surgeries but have been watching your accelerators (Tennis Evo) and I clocked in at 98 mph today (no leg drive due to knees). I'm 46 so I was pretty thrilled. Couldn't help but think what my potential would be with good knees (good leg drive).
Hi Jeff what movement on the servers mechanics cause shoulder pain ? i did improve my serve with your technique but now I’m starting to have shoulder pain after long matches ... any recommendations? Thanks
Hi Jeff, thanks for the great work. A question about the "pinpoint" stance. Do you feel it is a given that a player loses the ability to use leg drive from that stance, or is it more a question of bad habit vs. good habit. For instance, as a lifelong basketball player, it is more rhythmic for me to bring my feet closer together before driving up toward the ball. I feel stiff when I remain fully in the platform stance. Of course I will do my best to follow your advice, but can you do a video on a semi-platform stance, where the feet do not come quite as close together, but still have good balance and drive? Thanks again for all the great advice.
so you think 60 40 immediately as toss goes up with hip turn, l did not like putting all weight as toss goes up on front foot like many teach, my serve has a long way to go, as they compare serve to throwing a ball, but when you pitch a baseball you push off back leg, so even 60 40 is still tough for me, but learning as my bad whip motion is parially due to too much weight on back foot as well as learning to relax arm when ball is tossed, shadow swing is solid at least upper body, did you get all that! lo!
Hi Jeff I'd like to see a video where you analyze contribution of each move/action (leg drive, hip push up, racket speed, pronation) and proportionate the total power applied to a ball in serve at contact for an ATP Pro. Assume the total power is 100 (also assume the toss is perfect) and work out the numbers for other components. You can assume each component will have additive effect (imagine like a simple interest instead of compound interest paying to your lender). For example I personally have improved my serve speed in the last 12 months by increasing the racket speed and dropping the racket at the back with good shoulder turn, loose arm and wrist.. but still having difficulty in fully using my legs (and probably hips) towards generating more serve speed. I look forward to hearing your comments. Thanks again for your great videos
I think it's time to work on the legs. I have a pinpoint and understand I could be losing power. I think I am falling into rather than driving / jumping up. Thanks

Hey Boris, you're welcome . Thank you for your valuable feedback. I'll recommend recording your serve, and if you want me to look at it or do a video analysis, you can email my support team at support@tennisevolution.com.
Just great video! Love it! BTW. I understand Your preference for platform stance, but I would still love to have Your analysis (what is to be focused on) also for pinpoint stance. The fact is that a lot of young competitive players just prefer that (especially girls) and if they want some tips and inspiration/correction it is not the first thing I would say them (for example in a serve clinic) "change Your stance" ...
As from one of his other detailed serve videos, I went to a more sideways platform. As Jeff said, it really helps you naturally get more hip and shoulder turn. This has freed up my mind so I can simply just focus on one thing and helps get me in a good rhythm. I remember back to my coach having us to figure 8s and then 1/2 and 3/4 serves, rhythm is the key. Jeff hands down is the best person I've seen on UA-cam for coaching. Do you offer online one-on-one?
I'm feeling a little lost on my serve. My coach has been telling me I can never toss my ball high enough and it always needs to be higher; but at times I feel off rhythm and waiting for it. When I toss lower my backswing is rushed (but might be a bit more consistent). I'm now testing a traditional vs abbreviated backswing... What's the best way for me to find that proper pattern that works most efficiently for me (without bad habits)?
I'd rather incorporate legs right from the start, otherwise you'd start off with a Sjeng Schalken serve and then try to reengineer it. Legs add more momentum to the toss/windup also which makes the whole motion more fluid and hence easier, for me at least.
Which leg you should bent first and more focus on? I heard from coaches is to focus on your right leg to bent so your trophy pose will be a lot easier to get balanced. What are your thoughts? Coach. :)
Tennis Evolution I practiced this for about 40 minutes today and I increased my consistency by quite a bit. I don't think I had much increase in power , but I put a lot more serves in the box. I will continue to practice this motion, thanks.
If you knew anything about physics you would load the back leg and slide the foot leg out as you rotate while driving off the back leg. I call this bringing the golf swing (and baseball throw) to the tennis serve.
