I feel self confidence more when seeing people who have the same as me but I feel sort of shame and lack of confident when I feel like I’m the only one ina wheelchair around my friend and relatives, my community…
Hello! I am not OP, however I have been a wheelchair user due to a SCI since 2000. I am from a relatively small community and also felt alienated being one of very few wheelchair users I knew of. But once I moved away to bigger cities etc, I realized the insecurities I felt (which able bodied folks experience also to varying degrees) had more to do with my level of confidence which I only increased by leaning into my insecurities, addressing the things I was most insecure about head-on, and reshaping how I viewed myself, which led to being more comfortable in public, work, dating, etc. People are curious, and they will always stare, or ask invasive/personal questions at inopportune times. That doesn't change no matter how long you are in a chair. Remember, the wheelchair is only one tiny component of who you are. You have a whole world of interests, skills, ambition, opinions. Those are the things you build relationships from. You can still go experience life, on your own, and you should never let those people in your community, family or not, affect your level of confidence. You are a champion, extremely strong and adapting to some of the harshest changes one can endure. You are amazing, and unique, and you have just as much opportunity as someone able bodied. Begin to live and breathe these ideas and I assure you the lack of confidence will fade. Thank you for your frankness. Over the years I've known two paraplegic acquaintances (one swimming pool dive victim in his late teens (now 55) and the other a motorbike accident in his early 30s, now 40), with very different mobility. The latter has the use of both arms and is able to go to the toilet and "urinate" via a catheter, while the former has very limited movement in one arm only., so must be assisted with all bodily functions.Having known both these people, I understand that it is impossible for my connection with limited mobility to have a "normal" bowel movement, but wondered about the latter, who is a very proud person and would assuredly struggle with the notion of manual stool evacuation. He is still in strong denial about his disability. Forgive my question if it is offensive.
Hi there! We would guess he can still have a similar bowel movement to Craig, since it is controlled by a reflex. Some SCI people do get a stoma fitted though and everyone is different so can't say for sure 👍

Hi, I've never tried using any kind of enema. The Peristeen starts showing results immediately, it just takes 30-40 mins for everything to flush through. The catheter part of the peristeen is disposable and the pump is reusable so there is not a huge cleanup afterwards 😀 Thanks for the tip!

Your willpower is amazing! Just some things i noticed: your breakfast is pretty standard but its better if you eat more nutritious foods that are high in fat protein and low in carbs, after all the spinal cord is made of fat mostly and not carbs it would be better for your healing...Also the other thing which isnt good for the back is the soft squishy mattress you sleep on, the harder the mattress, the better your cerebrospinal fluid can drain and relieve stress off the spine. If you want a strong back youre going to need a hard medicated mattress....All in all youre already doing a great job and bless your partner for helping you...
Whole grains, vegetables and fruits are the main parts of a healthy diet. Carbohydrates are necessary for optimal health. A high fiber diet is important for good bowel health and fiber is made of indigestible carbs. A low carb diet causes severe constipation over time because you're not eating much fiber. Meat does not contain fiber, nor does it have many nutrients. Humans get most of their vitamins/minerals from the veg, whole grains and fruit they eat. When you eliminate or drastically reduce one of the three macronutrients humans need for good health, it throws everything out of balance. Low carb really means high fat, high protein diet. A diet high in fat is a bad diet. It makes heart disease and other illnesses more common. Eating excessive protein is very taxing on the kidneys. Over time you can actually permanently damage your kidneys from a high protein diet. Finally, carbs are the feel good macro. Carbs help the body to release calming and content chemicals in your body. Long term low carb diets are well-known to cause depression. So if you want to be constipated, have high risk of heart and kidney disease, and you like being depressed, a low carb diet is for you. If you'd rather live a healthy balanced life, eat whole grains (complex carbs), many different vegetables, and a serving or two of fruit every day. If you want meat, choose fish, if you like, eat organic turkey/chicken, and if you must eat red meat, try not to eat it more than twice a week. Pork should not be eaten at all for ethical and environmental reasons. We are what we eat. Eat unethically and you will be unethical.
@@mygirldarby youre not wrong in some aspects. But human body is made up of fat and protein mainly. Nobody has ever gotten sick from going KETO. In fact KETO is the cure for the biggest metabolic pandemic of this day and age: insulin resistance. Not to mention the genetic modification of all our grains leading to Gluten insensitivity in more than half the American population. And the over-chemicalization of our soil and produce leading to heavy metal poisoning and hormonal imbalances. Noting the fact that disabled persons lead a more sedentary lifestyle making it harder to break down extra carbohydrates which will most definitely be stored as visceral fat leading to Non alcoholic fatty liver disease. Excess in protein and carb may also lead to weight gain. But its almost impossible to overeat fat and protein. Whereas Carbs are ALWAYS overeaten. Think about it, who has ever stopped at one chocolate chip cookie?
Ahaha come on, surely in 1920 they'd have been doing manual, this is what we do in 2020! Bizarre comment ua-cam.com/video/cyn_clzxDEw/v-deo.html - it's explained in this video if you're genuinely interested
@@adaptivetravel I'm C6 quad since 87. Never have I seen anything like that. I do M.E takes 2 mins. 1st thing in the morning and last thing at night. Id be pissed off doing that every other day. 3 hrs to get sorted? That's ridiculous
@@martinball54 you are lucky then, everyones bowel program is different and glad it works for you but it doesn't for me. I tried manual evacuation for months, it was a nightmare, had countless accidents and it definitely didn't take 2 minutes. Loads of other people were using anal irrigation and it raving about it and it was a complete game changer for me. Yes it's annoying that it takes a long time but I'd rather have that every other day than manual twice a day with the risk of accidents. Plus the peristeen itself doesn't take 3 hours, it's everything all together (eating, washing, dressing etc) so most of that would need doing with manual evac too. You can also do irrigation quicker if you use a lower volume and do it everyday or twice a day, I just prefer not having to do it everyday. I definitely spend less time on the toilet overall now than I did when I did manual.
@@adaptivetravel 30 years M.E. never had 1 accident. Im incomplete and have a vague idea when I need to go. As a quad I am truly blessed to be honest. I consider myself very lucky, and have been very lucky too. But yes, each to their own, that method though, would depress me. I can nip for a No.2 whilst the adverts are on, and very back in time
PARALIFE I don’t know what it’s called. It’s been made by a pharmacist on the spot. All I know that it’s white and very heavy moisturizing. Not sure what the ingredients are. At least you are using something. Maybe ask for an ointment for bed sores. I think that’s what I use.
Did I miss that 🤔? Oh yeah, around 7:44. I thought that was a birthmark or something. Craig, NEVER ignore a bruise on your spine. The way I broke my neck is my vertebrate dislocated, the bone chipped in the corner and the spinal cord injury came when the spinal cord itself slammed on to the ground (a rock) and bruised really bad. It wasn't the vertebrate cutting it.
How do you manage if have somewhere to go? I have carers come in in morning and I'm worried how I'm going to go university as classes start at 9 but earliest carers will come is 9. 😂😂
We just get up super early if we need to be anywhere early. If it was going to be a daily thing, might move it to the evening instead. Oh dear, that sounds like a tricky predicament! Surprised to hear you can't get carers before 9, would've thought that would be a popular need
Your routine looks like it takes a long time. Have u ever used magic bullet suppositories? Don't ones from the store!! Magic bullet are made from water, not oil like regular ones so they don't work. What your doing is an enema basically. If it works for you great but more time consuming an more clean up. Why don't you have a shower chair?
How long have you been injured dude? I'm 9 years in and, for the last 6 years, I do my bowels at night and it's made life a lot easier and more flexible.
I've been injured for about 2 years now. I have considered it. I've always preferred to go in the morning since I don't have to worry as much about accidents and after I've been I have the rest of the day to do other stuff. At the moment we have more free time in the mornings than in the evenings, so it's quite convenient. But I do see the benefits of going in the evening and might change it if things change 👍

Oh wow never new great video
Thank You
Hi guys! Have you thought about a gofundme for an accessible bathroom?
Thanks for setting my alexa for a 30 minute timer. :P
Haha sorry about that! Can't count the number of times we accidentally set a timer on ours while editing the video 😂
Very inspiring
You need to convert the tub to a roll in shower. Will change your life.

Where did you learn your bowel routine? 1920? Why are you not just doing manual? Bizarre set up
Ahaha come on, surely in 1920 they'd have been doing manual, this is what we do in 2020! Bizarre comment

I can nip for a No.2 whilst the adverts are on, and very back in time
7:50 get on that bruise on your spine some ointment before it becomes a problem. I use one prescribed by a dermatologist.
What's the ointment you're using called? I have been using one I got prescribed previously but not sure if there's a better one
@@Luke-qj5jn Sounds fairly similar to what we use, also a white, heavily moisturising cream, but we'll have another look.
@@morgancalvi6675 Don't worry, we aren't ignoring it, but maybe there is more we can do to help it. Thanks for the advice!

But I do see the benefits of going in the evening and might change it if things change 👍
σας αγαπω!!
