    I’m hesitant to share something like this because it’s so personal and feels a bit embarrassing. But when I was 13 and suicidal, I came back to this channel and again. I’m usually a silent fan, watching and talking about your stuff with a friend, but maybe I should try to actively participate more. I always thought my comments wouldn’t matter, that they would just get lost in the hundreds/thousands of others. But after watching this, I think it might not really matter if they do, because even if only one person looks at a bad joke I made or reads my response to the video, then I am contributing to a positive online space (which seem to be difficult to find). So here’s to creating together!
    And here’s to nerd fighters, and this space made by so many of us.

      I’ve been a silent fan as well, but I’ve never really felt connected to the community. Seeing these videos now, I’m not sure if I should contribute to the community if they don’t want it to grow.
      Over the past couple of years, I twice went to see John and Hank on tour but went by myself both times. It would have been nice to meet new people but it looked like everyone came with people they already knew, and I didn’t want to disrupt that.
      I feel the same in real life, having just moved to a new town. Going to social events where everyone else knows each other, most grew up here, I often feel out of place and wondering if these people already have all the community they want.

Nerdfighteria has been a part of *me* for over 10 years, and Hank and John have been there for me in significant ways I'm sure they didn't intend. When I first discovered Vlogbrothers, I was a young college student still searching for myself, and this content, this community, this atmosphere of camaraderie and collaboration and kindness really informed who I've turned out to be (and will continue to become). I am now 25, as connected with the community as I've ever been. I can't choose one golden age of vlogbrothers, because the entire journey has changed who I am for the better. I'm majoring in a STEM field, because you guys encouraged the spark of interest in science I had that my living situation was always trying to snuff out. I'm working towards getting help for the mental health problems I have to deal with because of what I went through, in part because I'm not ashamed of them, thanks to you two. You guys help me pass the time with all your podcasts and Hank's songs, at my job that's low-paying and physically demanding, but can open the door to my dream career down the line. That single Eye haha so funny to find a dutchie on this comment. I was going to add on that in the Netherlands there’s a large debate within the art world about referring to the 17th century as the “Golden Age.” Not because it implies a downfall afterward, but rather because Dutch “Golden Age” was only possible because of the exploitation of other countries and peoples.

    I've been a nerdfighter since 2009, but the past year has been the greatest time for these videos. There's a focused energy about them that can't be defined by trends or an algorithm. It feels as if this was what Vlogbrothers was always meant to be. But now with the wisdom of years it's found a real purpose of being honest, educational, silly, and poetic. This is maturity in its most beautiful form. We should all hope to be like that one day.

I’m a college sophomore (was in middle school when I joined nerdfighteria) and I feel like vlogbrothers videos have always been that space I can relax in enjoying honest, educational, silly, and poetic content. My friends don’t get it because they only know Hank from SciShow or John from Crash Course or TFiOS. But never the “vlogbrothers version” of you two. Vlogbrothers and nerdfighteria were a big part of my life during one of the hardest times I had, in 2013-2014. It was when my depression was at its worst yet I didn't have the words to seek help IRL. Having this channel and this community, which reminded me how much good I can add to the world, really kept me going. Thank you for that.
    I've since kinda lost track, due to changing of life circumstances and trying to have less screen time for self care. I've recently came back, and an overwhelming sense of coming back home welcomed me. Your videos stayed every bit as smart and interesting as I remembered, and I'm still enjoying them 7 years after stumbling across them for the first time.

    I'll say that even though I've watched on-and-off for years, it's only been recently that I started watching every video. Part of it was the All-Star gimmick, because it was immensely entertaining to see just how far you could take it and how long you could keep it up, but I also think I kept it up because these pandemic blogs are a spot of warmth in a very cold period of time. Being part of Nerdfighteria has been one of the great joys of my life.
    I stumbled into it around 2011, and in the years since I have met my husband here, found a best friend, and now I am slowly building the courage to persue my dream of leaving my day job and working full time in digital media (behind the scenes)
    When I found this community, I was a terrified, lonely, broke 18 year old who had been pushed to move out and live alone for the first time, I was just a kid who felt completely alone in the world and needed big brother figures to look up to with jokes, guidance and above all else, a message of hope.
    Vlogbrothers and the friends I made through supporting the channel became a light at the end of the tunnel, and has remained such all this time.
    Every day is a golden age of Nerdfighteria for me.

I remember in my first year of high school seeing a classmate wearing a nerdfighter shirt on dress as you please day. I could never work up the courage to say 'Hey, me too. I was 13 when i first started watching vlogbrothers. I had just moved to a new state, I had no friends, and found myself on the internet a lot more than I had ever been before. I was in 6th grade and felt alone everywhere except for the Nerdfighteria. To me, the golden age of vlogbrothers has to be that first scavenger hunt. I don't think I've had as much fun online as I did hunting for geocaches and secret clues. Eventually, I found friends who I got to share my favorite youtube channel with at school, and we became close friends. Now, I'm 26. I just graduated law school in yet another state. Somehow I still keep in touch with the friends I made through vlogbrothers in 7th grade. Over the years I've come and gone from UA-cam. Sometimes I'm watching every upload, and sometimes I go years or months without watching anything. Still, when I come back it feels like a reunion--like I'm hearing from an old friend I've known since I was a kid.
    Thank you Hank and John--whether the "golden age" has passed or is still ahead, I am grateful to you for opening your lives to us and creating a community of thoughtful and kind people.

    John, I had a teacher in High School that you remind me of. He made learning, not only intriguing, but also relaxing and welcoming. I could listen to him talk for hours about anything. Sometimes, he would go on these long, meandering tangents that would seem random initially, but would eventually circle the topic at hand and give you a much more encompassing picture of what he wanted us to learn.
    Keep up the amazing work. I look forward for the each anfractuous story you weave that I can spend the rest of my day wrapping my brain with.

    Boy, am I glad to be here. It has taken me a while to learn that these videos aren't made to be watched like most content is. They're made to be engaged with. They're at their best when they spark discussions, encourage reflection, and inspire creation. And, as a viewer, I have the power to help them reach their best - by engaging. That is what this community, and all community, is to me: people who make something better by engaging with it and each other.

The world needs more hank and johns (or as I prefer to think of it John and hanks). The golden days vlog brothers was many years ago when two people shared that first kiss and would go on to have two wonderful boys that when all that cards are laid on the table... humanity was better for it.

    I was actually thinking about this the other day because my final year of high school (back in 2013), I remember so many people at my school used to wear pizza john shirts or call themselves nerdfighters and you would always see at least somebody with one of your books in hand, and although these days I don't see that so often, it's actually quite refreshing that the core values of this channel (friendship, caring and helping others, having weird interests) haven't changed since then and I think it's wonderful that you don't use the views on your videos as a metric of success! I've been a semi-regular viewer of you two since 2012 and I still really enjoy your content!

    Thank you to the Brothers Green for everything you do. For decreasing world-suck. For Dear John and Hank and making me laugh during the hard times. For The Anthropocene Reviewed and making me see light even in the deepest darkness. For vlogbrothers and SciShow and novels and live shows and all of the other wonderful things you have done to make my life and other's lives feel fuller, richer, and more lovely. Thank you for making 2020 that much more bearable. And thank you for sharing your kind souls with the world. You both have been such a guiding light throughout the years... and have given me the strength to press onward.
    Your beautiful souls make me strive to be ever better.
    So thank you. And hello :)

    This is random, but I just realised that we mean different things when we call something like a song 19 years old, and a person 19 years old. For the song, we're mean it happened/came out 19 years ago, and for a person, we mean that the person has been with us for 19 years. But technically, we mean the same thing, and it's just our understanding of it that's different. And I don't why that's so interesting to me. But it is.

    • @huiflecha
      @huiflecha 3 роки тому +1

      I think it is different. A song can change over those 19 years because you interpret it differently. But a human can also change themselves. So a song is something you take with you on your journey while a person joines you. The person is voluntary and requires more work from you which also makes it more precious.

    • @Guerin78
      @Guerin78 3 роки тому +2

      Well, I mean, it ALSO means that the person came out (of their mother, in this case) nineteen years ago. We just don't tend to put it in those terms.

      @@abigailchorley8118 I'm from India, and the older people my family think of it not as turning 19, but starting 20. So you're considering 20.

    • @robertdguthrie
      @robertdguthrie 3 роки тому +1

      That does tickle something in the old grey cells for me too. But I think the release of a song 19 years ago is essentially the "end" of that song's development. You can interpret it differently 19 years after it was released, and there certainly can be different recordings of the same song (even by the same artist). There can be covers of the song, parodies, etc... but when a song is released, it's essentially _done_.
      A person who is 19 years old is vastly different than they were when they were "released" at zero years old.
      Both were being developed for a period of time before they "came out" from initial conception through a period of gestation, but at the time they're presented to the world, the song is done, but the human has (hopefully) barely started to become what they will be in 19 years.

    The whole “the golden age is now” hit me. It is, for me at least, right now. I’ve been writing more, and actually learning as opposed to scoring well on tests. Yes, there’s burnout but for once there’s actually a time to rest from it. I know I’m very lucky to not be too impacted by corona considering I’m a full time student in a wealthy country who learns well online, and I thank GOD for that. I pray everyone of you who reads this, and for those who don’t, that there will be no distinguishable golden age in your life except for the “right now” moments, because life will be steadily the best thing you’ve ever experienced, crescendoing, and continuing to do so after our life on earth ends. Also, the word bittersweet is like, really cool, it just makes all the good chemicals in my brain do the good chemical thing

It’s so wild to think about how your content has been one of the only constants through my adolescence (I started watching at 14). I went through dozens of kind of cringey phases (doctor who, tumblr, the whole thing), but I’ve always just loved what you guys make.
    It’s also funny how your presence on the internet has evolved. My boyfriend is big on educational UA-cam content and constantly watches crashcourse. I recently was like “you know who John Green is, right?” and got to break the news that you’re an author and UA-camr who more or less shaped my youth.
