  • Learning how to increase attack angle is an efficient way to gain more distance off the tee. While many golfers focus solely on swing speed or ball speed, delivering the golf club at impact efficiently is the a key component to distance.
    In this video, 2nd Swing master fitter and professional golfer Thomas Campbell provides three tips that can help you increase attack angle. Campbell also explains why hitting up on the ball with an increase attack angle is beneficial to your game.

    Solid points that definitely help you hit the ball farther, one advantage you have is the ability to know what your attack angle is, and I would guess 90 percent of golfers have no idea what their attack angle is.

    I have the opposite issue from what you are describing. I am a senior golfer with a driver club head speed of about 87 mph. I use a 44.5" A flex driver shaft for consistency. Over the years I bought several high loft drivers and hit a lot of straight, high, and short drives. When you hear a solidly struck drive hit the ground with a thump with like a short iron, you know something is to quite right. One day in frustration, I turned my 12 degree Mizen JPX 850 A flex 0 driver down ro 8 degrees. The results were impressive. Although the driver was less forgiving, I picked up over 20 yards, I later learned that because of my wide shoulders and shorter arms I was delivering a dynamic loft of almost 20 degrees with high loft drivers. I now use a Cobra Speed Zone Tour Length A Flex driver set at 8.5 D and am hitting some of the best drives I ever have in the past 20 years.

      I was just reading an article that suggested for slower swings, lower loft might be longer. Because the dynamic loft of a forward ball position and higher tee height doesn't demand a higher club loft.

    Thanks for the video and the set up options for hitting up on the ball. I did notice that you swing speed was 113 mph(+5) vs 105 mph(-2) . How much did the increase in swing speed contribute to more carry and total distance vs the attack angle. Something that would have been helpful would be you swinging at 105mph but hitting up so we could see the difference due solely to attack angle. Thanks and hit em straight--NEVER MIND I see you answered that question already in the comments

    Two questions:
    Awesome, Interesting piece moving the ball forward to increase your swing speed, and having the left shoulder higher at the address to change the AoA, that said, is your Tempo the same with all clubs and the Driver.
    With Driver, do you Closed stance, I find with a square stance and the ball forward will hook to the left, where is your focus point, The Ball, or behind the ball to get club speeds to 113 for distance

    • @2ndswing
      @2ndswing  2 роки тому +1

      Michael, thanks for watching and contributing! I've seen this exact thing in the fitting bays. A lot of guys on tour have a "higher launch angle", which is great for distance, when paired with the correct loft for launch conditions. I wouldn't say it's a "red flag" at all, with launching the ball high. If you have an adjustable driver, I would suggest lowering the loft and adjusting the face angle (if possible). That way we can get you into the middle of the clubhead and maximize those conditions. Ultimately, a fitting would really be benefitial. Changing the center of gravity in the driver head can change launch conditions greatly...(forward weighted vs back-weighted). Shaft weight and flex also play a big role in this. -Danny

    Would moving the ball forward also help with a swing that is too inside out? Maybe give it more time to come in a straight path? I’m struggling with an 8 degree inside out path with inconsistent contact and need to fix it. Thx!

    • @2ndswing
      @2ndswing  3 роки тому +1

      In testing we have found that moving the ball forward does help correct an in to out path. Generally, the farther back the ball is, the more open the clubface is at impact. Now, the face angle isn't the same as club path, but a more corrected club path can mitigate issues with the face angle.

    Hello, club head and ball speeds have big differences between the two groups. It would be more accurate to compare the carry distance and total distance at the same clubhead and ball speeds. Are the speeds different as the result of the attack angles?

  • @jedadiahkcombs

    C'mon Thomas. You cant swing it 10mph faster and say it was the ball position that added the distance

    • @2ndswing
      @2ndswing  3 роки тому +4

      Thanks for watching. Ball position absolutely lead to more distance. It is so important to help imporve your attack angle. Swinging with a negative attack angle it very uncomfortable for me and was hard to swing faster. Catching the ground will also slow your club speed down. Even still every mph club speed is 2-3 yards. Lets just say club speed that is 10mph faster with a negative attack angle that would equate to an additional 30 yards. Still 50 yards short of the postive attack angle example. Hope this helps.

  • @michaelbarker3749
    @michaelbarker3749 3 роки тому +5

    Hitting down on it and getting 50 yards of roll? What is the fairway, an airport runway? Gtfoh with that roll. 😂😂😂
    Also, 106 swing speed vs 113 swing speed will make all the difference.
    Don’t get me wrong, I’m all about hitting up on the ball, but your monitor set up is BS and you sand bagged the swing speed. Smh

    • @2ndswing
      @2ndswing  3 роки тому +2

      Thanks for watching. Every mph club speed is 2-3 yards. Say its 3 yards which would mean 243 v 293 carry distance comparing the exact same swing speed. Still a 50 yard carry distance gain...Carry distance is where its at as we know unless its a links course the ball will not roll 50 yards. Also its hard to swing the club as fast when you hit down on the ball as you hit ground slowing the club down. Hope this helps and if you trust the TrackMan data you will hit much longer drives by increasing your attack angle.

  • @Golfzilla70
    @Golfzilla70 3 роки тому

    you're getting awfully low spin numbers for that negative angle of attack. I know when i used to have a negative angle of attack my spin with driver ranged anywhere from 2900 rpms to over 3500 rpms. And i wasn't hitting the ground with the driver, just catching it on the downswing. I'm better now than what i was, but i'm still just only able to get about 2-3 degrees upward angle of attack. I believe if i got another 2 degrees somehow it would make a world of difference. In any case, for me, my clubhead speed never changed because of all this (same speed, regardless of ball position or shoulder tilt). But the the combination of those factors did help me to reduce the ball spin down to between 2000-2400 rpms. And i'm getting more rollout than i did.

    • @2ndswing
      @2ndswing  3 роки тому

      Keep in mind hit location will also influence that spin. But generally a steeper attack angle will cause more spin but a higher hit location on the face. Tee height really helps!

      @2ndswing  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for watching. It sure makes a huge difference. Not saying a golfer will physically swing faster with a higher tee or by moving the ball position further forward... but if your not catching the ground like you can when hitting down on the ball with a negative attack angle the ground will not slow you down. Even still with faster club speed this video clearly shows the impportance of increasing your attack angle.

      @@2ndswing the last tip was the most relevant.
      Maintaining spine angle and having that trail shoulder dropping lower, and your lead shoulder coming higher as you come into impact, is something that absolutely makes sense to me.
      I had a casual instructor tell me recently to slow my shoulder rotation as I was hitting more hooks than I used to, and the feeling of your shoulder tip helps my upper body “hang back” a bit longer to get that positive AOA. Thanks again boys, Thomas you’re able to share information that is easily understood.
