I'm lying on my bed, recovering from chemotherapy, listening to this. I just cried the whole way through the adagio. Gould's unbelievable playing of this beautiful piece lifted me to spiritual and emotional places that left me drained. Music is truly God's gift when it can provide such profound experiences.
When I was in chemo I was consumed by worries and fears. I thought of little else. A friend/colleague insisted on visiting and brought homemade sweets and piano duets, Schubert and PDQ Bach among them. She opened up my grand piano, we sat down and sight read music, laughed, hugged and played more. I swear my healing started that day. Music is a powerful agent for the heart and mind. the best to you, keep music in your soul and you'll do fine.

The CBC, the Canadian public broadcaster, worked with Gould for years and much of what we can see of him is CBC produced. A gratuitous tidbit but one I marvel at is the fact that arts funding in Canada really took off in the 1950s after the recommendation of Massey Commission (1951). I read somewhere that Glenn Gould was a substitute for Paolini who played a concert night before and scheduled to record Beethoven #5 the morning after. I don’t remember why but Paolini canceled the recording suddenly. Very fortunately Glenn Gould was in town (Toronto). The CBC called him in the middle of the night (I think about 3am) and asked, (begged, more like) him to do the recording. His initial answer was that he hadn’t played the concerto for many years and also he is not too fond of #5 so he will think about it and an hour later he said “okay ,I will do it” . He showed up 9am in the morning and played! Just incredible!
To me, the orchestra made with perfect harmony With piano solo parts. Very refined piano sounds beyond technical skills. Thanks For uploading this great Beethoven's work.
I wonder how mr. Gould felt after this, or any..performance. drained, exhausted, elated, grateful...?? He just becomes one with the music and seems lost to all else, bless him. 🌺

Two of the greatest Beethoven interpreters of all time, Glenn Gould and Karel Ancerl, with the top level Toronto Symphony Orchestra, performing one of the greatest musical scores ever written; recorded for posterity. Such heartbreaking beauty, breathtaking joy, tenderness and power, the 5th piano concerto is a monumental work of art surely the equal of anything humans have ever produced. THE greatest few minutes of music ever written! Nothing will ever come close to this the most sublime works of art in history. How can a human create this? Never been very religious but this makes me wonder.
I had never the 5th concerto played like that. What an inspired performance by both the orchestra and the soloist. The adagio was out of this world, and the final wildly magnificent!
For years, it was the 1st and 3rd movements that captured me. I kept reading people express their incredulity at the sheer beauty of second movement but I could never fully understand why..until now. Now. Now, I see. The 2nd movement is a wonder. A WONDER. And this entire interpretation is, as someone wrote here, sth that must be sent out into the universe; it must survive mankind. And Glenn Gould: words fail me. His genius is of the mysterious kind; not the 'ordinary' kind. This interpretation is an entire world!
This performance is one of my favorite things to have ever been recorded. Getting to see Glenn Gould playing at a level that humans may not ever be able to achieve again, the Toronto Symphony delivering one of the most beautifully and impeccably on-point orchestral performances I’ve ever heard, the joy on Maestro Ančerl’s face throughout, Glenn conducting a little on his own at the very end… I love it all. [not to mention the context of Gould being an emergency fill-in after a rather unceremonious departure by Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, rehearsing the entire concerto overnight, and flying to New York to perform it on live TV with only a day’s notice]
Glenn Gould was out of this world and his musical memory was a legend. In 1970, when Italian pianist, Arturo Benedetto Michelangeli, was unable to carry out his scheduled performance of Beethoven’s Concerto No.5, Emperor, in Toronto, Gould was given a telephone call the night before the concert, and asked if he could come in and play it the next morning, with the Toronto Symphony and the conductor, Karel Ančerl, as a substitute for Michelangeli. Gould’s answer was positive, and he rehearsed the Concerto, which he had not played since he recorded it with Leopoldo Stokowski and American Symphony Orchestra in 1966, overnight. The concert was recorded for TV as planned, and aired on September 12, 1970. As can be seen and heard here, Gould and the orchestra played Beethoven’s Concerto flawlessly.
Eh, this is a thing any known pianist can do. Once you played a piece 20-50 times, it remains in hands for life. You are right, his memory was exceptional, is just the example which is not on spot.
@@Paroles_et_Musique - bearing in mind: 1) that Gould stopped performing in public in April 1964, and thus the repeated long term playing, solidifying the memories of music pieces by playing them 25-50 times on tour 2) that his studio recording of the Emperor under Stokowski was finished in 1966 - then going back four years later to play it live like this from memory, with 24 hours notice, is still enough of a solid feat to be commended as a big thing. So we have to agree to disagree on this.
@@jesperth.petersen8386 Is not about disagreeing but how musicians memory works. Top pianists perform same work hundreds of times, and when you do that, it is in your head for life - what we call affect memory. Someone wakes you in the nigh, 15 years later, you can play it. Moreover, Emperor is not Rach 3 or Prokofiev 2, is something basic to memorize, with repetitive structure and technically easy.
@@Paroles_et_Musique I still disagree, and about top pianists remembering things forever, I will disagree on the one too - ua-cam.com/video/gVZCr_fgWqU/v-deo.html - backed by this top pianist
@@Paroles_et_Musique totally false. There are no pianists at this level who would agree to show up on short notice like this to play such a piece as it could tarnish their reputation and it would not be worth the risk. Even Yuja knows ahead of time that Martha may cancel- it's pre-arranged that she's the backup and she is prepared as an alternate. Gould got less than 9 hours' notice to play this and performed at this competence...simply amazing. there are tons of pianists who've played pieces 100s of times and who stopped playing them and can no longer do so after sufficient time has passed.
This is surely one of the many prayers that Beethoven exalted to God. No-one plays the adagio as Gould does. The orchestra is beautifully conducted. No doubt the greatest of composers his counterpoint is heavenly.
@@phrygiandom8202 Gould called Bach the greatest craftsman in music. Of course he gave his usual controversial take that Gibbons was his favorite composer but everyone around him knows that is probably not true.
@@charc4819 brilliant words for a brilliant performance!!!
You should hear the one he did with Stokowski. The third movement is a grand waltz.
Char, Thank you for writing.
@@ttrons2 I *need* to hear each one. Over and over.
@@Paroles_et_Musique - bearing in mind:
1) that Gould stopped performing in public in April 1964, and thus the repeated long term playing, solidifying the memories of music pieces by playing them 25-50 times on tour
2) that his studio recording of the Emperor under Stokowski was finished in 1966
- then going back four years later to play it live like this from memory, with 24 hours notice, is still enough of a solid feat to be commended as a big thing.
I wish he did more concertos in his career. Every single one is such a gift
I agree 💯 percent
This is one of my favourite piano concertos of Beethoven and Glenn Gould is an unforgettable interpreter
This is surely one of the many prayers that Beethoven exalted to God. No-one plays the adagio as Gould does. The orchestra is beautifully conducted. No doubt the greatest of composers his counterpoint is heavenly.
Very nice 👌 comment!
Well Gould would certainly disagree with you there on Beethoven being the greatest :)
@@anonymousl5150 BACH?
@@phrygiandom8202 Gould called Bach the greatest craftsman in music. Of course he gave his usual controversial take that Gibbons was his favorite composer but everyone around him knows that is probably not true. He gradually lost respect for Beethoven as he aged and thought he was pretty nuch overrated, in the Glenn Gould Reader and Tim Page interview.
Beautiful. The clarity is just fantastic.
Sehr schöne, emotionale und beeindruckende Musik von. L. van Beethoven, wunderbar dargeboten.
Puissance et grace
An extraordinary performance, unlike any other, unmatchable.......
Glenn was a weirdo, a nut, an eccentric and a genius. I've heard other versions that were played very well, but Glenn doesn't play this piece, he brings it to life.
The best performance ever~! I love his touch and singing without words~.
🤣
I have discovered Glenn Gould through an Instagram post by the brilliant young pianist Cho Seong-Jin. Brilliant, because his playing captivates and moves me. I cannot begin to find the words that describe this time with Glenn Gould - i am transported.
Welcome!
Glenn Gould and Ludwig van Beethoven a perfect pair of masters of music.
The conductor is so proud of his orchestra and soloist, and rightly so!
Mooie muziek thanks van ben fastenau Middelburg Holland
Glenn at his best with Ludwig at his best! I like Glenn's variety of trills!
..how lucky are we! thankyou for sharing this.. 🙂
My god, this is absolutely magnificent.
Nostalgic for a time when there could be someone so great filling in for someone else so great!
Gould's interpretations of ALL Beethoven Concerti are excellent. His cadenzas for Beethoven Piano Concerto 1 (Columbia) are fantastic. My favourite recording of #1.
Grazie.
So grateful to be able to hear this in my own space so many years after the event. I enjoyed every minute. Many thanks to those who made this video possible.
The best interpretation ever heard of this famous Beethoven's concerto.
Beyond any doubt.
The best interpretation you ever heard. Beyond any doubt?
Speciality interpretation
I love Gould too. Especially for Bach which normally doesn't sound right on piano. However, for the emperor, van cliburn with reiner and the Chicago Symphony is to my ears, the greatest version. Like Gould on the Goldberg Variations.
👏👍
my favourite classical piece, truly heaven on earth, having a stressful day on computer working from in lockdown, listen to this , deep breaths and carry on :)
I,m sure when we will go to sleep forever, this unbelievable melody will follow us for eternity
Not the worst thought 🙂
Great performance! Mr Gould is a great pianist!
Fabulous performance and beyond belief!...
Would give 1000's likes. What a fortunate mishap with the event we can enjoy here!
