I think the old employer is walking around and talking s*** about her but she's doing it on the way that she can't be sued for which is still messed up. I don't think an employer should ever have the right to tell somebody they can't own a business I don't think it should matter almost 3 mi away from her old one if your business is doing so great your ex-employee wouldn't be any competition and the fact that she was able to take several of her employees with her when she left just says something about the employer because if that employer wasn't a bad person she would not have had that many people leave on her like that
That owner has tried running for office a few times and almost lost her license by trying to stay open during COVID . She also said children shouldn't learn about the Civil War in school and her son made a speech to the school board saying pride flags shouldn't be flown in schools . No wonder her employees left her!
It's reasonable to a certain distance away. It's legal in U.K. 🇬🇧 for certain businesses and in certain Local Authority areas. It has to be announced in local newspapers and by poster for local people to read. Local people are the right to object too. Ultimately the Local Authority decides. It can appealed too I think 5 mile distance is reasonable. It's only for certain businesses though.

I think that car case was unfair. He said he had proof of the repairs to the truck, either way the other guy came up on some money since the repairs were done. He's getting a better truck than what he gave the defendant. She should have looked at the evidence first, it didn't matter how much the car he had traded for the truck was. He'll still be out of that money either way. She was focused on the amount his car was worth. Plantiff should have had to pay for the repairs defendant made to the truck, if his proof was sufficient.

If judge Judy really feel that it's okay for an employee to fire someone simply because they just don't like them anymore that's outrageous and that's what's wrong with our country! Employees should have rights too!
In the UK an employer cannot fire someone without reasonable cause, same as America by the sound of it. We have what are called Industrial Tribunals which are a court setting where an employee can take their ex-boss to plead their case for unfair dismissal. In this case though, the Defendant signed an agreement not to open up a similar business within a short distance, and she did.
They weren’t employees at the time she told them to sign the non compete. They were independent contractors. The store owner gave them clients and the contractors would get paid directly by the clients.
When the owner decided to switch from contracts to employees, she had people sign the non-compete. The owner was switching from allowing contractors to work there to her own employees and she offered her contractors the openings first. If they didn’t want to be employed by her, they didn’t have to.
Employees have a specific role to perform and if you don’t perform it, the boss can fire you. It’s actually really fair.

I think what is missing here is the fact that an employer has to have cause to fire someone. You can't just fire someone because you don't like them. If they refuse to comply with your policy, they can be terminated for "insubordination "
Not signing a contract that would protect your employer's business can be looked at as insubordination.
But there has to be a balance. For example, the employer can't ask you to sign an agreement that allows them to do something that us illegal.
