Becky Timmis But oh well leave it to the professionals since he was pretending to be a makeup artist. Speaking of Harvey, he is going to reprise Edna in NBC's Hairspray Live.
Every time i watch Hairspray its really hard to believe its John Travolta till he either sings or dances. They did a really good job. I grew up with this one Im 23 years old and i never ever seen the old one
PERFECTION. I fell in love with the character of Edna Turnblad because of the STELLAR WORK done by this entire team. So much believable femininity...not just a costume.
That...is SO AWESOME. It means they did their job. Even though I knew it was Travolta playing Edna, you just get so lost in the honesty of this character. It's BEAUTIFUL.
This Edna is the sweetest sugarcube I've ever seen! I loved her so much! And still: John really was a perfect fit. And I adore that in this case Edna is a voluminous lady with feelings and true beauty - not a fat man dressed in flower prints. It's important when it comes to HAIRSPRAY and its message that we can fall in love with Edna as a woman who struggles but learns to accept her bodyshape. :)
It just goes to show that John Travolta is a fantastic actor no matter what role he plays. Totally believable as Edna, being able to sing and dance while taking you along for her journey of self discovery is phenomenal 🌟
When I was a kid, I was a HUGE fan of Grease. I saw this movie with my mother when I was 8, after it she said 'You know the mother is actually Danny'. I was in SHOCK!! It looked soooo good (well, still does). I was convinced that Edna was a real woman.
i almost didnt recognize him until one scene where tracy is trying to convince edna to be her agent,i saw edna's eyes and lips and how she smiles, and i was like "edna u look a lot like john travolta u know.................. wait.. is that john travolta??!" Damn team edna did one hell of a job and travolta makes it flawless too.. 😘😘
I’m so shocked at how real the costume looks! If I didn’t recognize John Travolta, I would 100% believe this was a real female actress who looked like that. Hats off to the amazing costume department in this movie and the work they put in to make such a great costume
It’s tradition it’s a reason why that role goes to a man since the drag Queen Divine the person Glenn played it and it’s been that specific character played by a man. I get it’s funny since your not used to that stuff.
mama bear 15 it’s not just tradition, it has to be that way, the rile was written for a man, a female wouldn’t be able to do the vocals of edna properly
They did a great job! The first time i watched hairspray I knew that John Travolta was in it, but I didn't knew he was Edna until I stared at her face carefully lol. P.D: Sorry for my bad english 😅
John Travolta put his everything into this role. He was so convincing, and I forgot it WAS him at some point. He was amazing as Edna. Imagine having to give a full performance and dance with all that stuff on!
This crap must have weighed a ton, and he was able to DANCE in it! In heels! and not melt into a puddle of sweat or collapse. My respect for Mr. Travolta increased enormously with this role. And in the dance scene with Christopher Walken, you could actually forget they were two men but could believe they were a real couple. THAT is acting!!
This process is so incredible...these people are genius and John Travolta is the ultimate of acting genius as well. Just imagine the time it took to get him into costume. And his voice & accent....I’ve lived in Baltimore all my life except I am out in the country. This is an absolute perfect accent for those Baltimoreans from the Highlandtown area. I’m awestruck.
John Travolta understood the assignment to a T, I sometimes forget that Edna was a man behind the scenes😀 and the team in creating his suit to life is just amazing
The people behind this is just incredible like the moment you see Travolta, bam. Edna. And you forget that it's Travolta in there too! It's just Edna and it's all beautiful and amazing and for a younger me who watched this years ago, I was so amazed because I knew it was Travolta but then it was just Edna on screen and I just - I love these people.
I remember playing Edna for my school play and even though I'm a big girl I wasn't big enough to be Edna so they put me in a bodysuit to make me look bigger. It was a nightmare to dance in that suit so I can't imagine being under all that latex and a bodysuit!
Edna Turnblad is his alter ego. I can't even see him when he's dressed up I just see her like John was never even cast and they actually found someone that looks like that. it is the most satisfying transformation I have ever seen and it never ceases to make me smile. I love you Edna Turnblad
The team and prosthetics are cool as hell but you also gotta give props to John Travolta for being able to perform so well while wearing all that, you forget that it’s him and it’s incredible
Just finished watching Hairspray. I never payed this movie attention until a few months ago. My grandma loves this movie and every time I'm at her house we watch it together, now I love this movie.
I’ve always had a fascination of bts when it came to movies, theatre, tv or music videos and how all of the prosthesis, makeup and costumes are made and applied on the actor. It’s just so interesting to watch.

the moment when I first watched hairspray and was trying to look for John Travolta in the movie cause haven't seen him yet and then finally realise that John is Edna 😂😂😂 I was so shocked when😂, he's was so convincing, and prosthetics team did amazing! 5:57 john says "on film first you're, oh that's john..", I was the complete opposite 😂😂😂 I was like "where's john?!" and then I was like "ooooh... that's John!" 😂😂😂

This movie came out when I was 10/11 (and sheltered- my family didn't show me a lot of movies at all). I had no clue who John Travolta was and fully thought Edna was a woman! The effects for this role were truly amazing, looking back as someone who now loves drag and SFX makeup i find it incredible!
+pbscraze Nine years later, I still can't believe it took him 29 years to get Travolta back into the genre that launched him into box office superstardom. I actually prefer Grease over Hairspray by the way.
I watched this movie so much as a kid and I only found out in the last five years or so that Edna was a drag performance. She just always looked so real to me and now I know why. This is definitely not your usual drag but it was really done in such a masterful way that it is hard to tell.
I like how the body shape of edna actually put more lore. Edna’s insecurity is based on how she used to be size ten and how her neighbors think she’s sexy and pretty girl next door. As we can see in the musical is that she doesn’t want to get out of her house due to how she looks now and what other people especially to those who knew her back then think what she looks now. The fact that the actor put his input of edna being a plus size but with a figure of voluptious woman made edna’s past more real and alive. As a woman who in fact used to look slimmer back then and now gained weight but still kept that almost hour glass figure can see it happen on a fictional character. It gives life into that character and actually can see her story without actually saying much.
Listen Seaweed’s hair alone was enough to make me fall in love with him. Add in the charming personality, great dance moves, fantastic voice... Penny is a lucky gal 😍

Travolta put 110% into his role and no one can change my mind
so true, and this Edna is a sweet, tender, caring and fun woman, he sells that completely
actually he did the role justice 100% however the rest of the cast needed just a little more tuning

I especially loved the dance scene with Travolta and Walken. You could see they were just having so much fun with each other.
