Made during WWII to train Luftwaffe pilots and bomber crews before and during the Battle of Britain, this silent film shows the North Sea and the industrial area of Northeast England defined by the Tyne and Tees Rivers. A card at the start of the film informs viewers (:26) that the film is top secret and for official use only. Various features including important coal and industrial centers, and geographic features such as the York Moors, dams and other waypoints are shown.

Wow amazing my home town is Middlesbrough, My dad was only a baby at this time but his brothers remember the area getting bombed because of the steel works and ship building on the tees
It was a landmark guide for Luftwaffe pilots for air to ground navigation and spotting certain landmarks,industrial centers etc.
If ever a video needed to have captions, this is one of them. I presume that the ability to read was expected of all LUFTWAFFE aircrews.
My Nanna was strafed in Wallsend, wonder if that was as a result of this briefing? (she survived btw)

Wow, thanks for posting! Was the source film silent as well? It'd been great to be able to hear the original German narration (if there was any; maybe it was that ultra secret?).
If you read the description - this is a silent film. It likely was
presented by a lecturer or instructor operation off notes or a script.

I cant read German but i could see the date april 1934. This was for pilots flying passengers and business ppl. A topical overview of the land height and visual spotting to aid navigation. I dont believe radio triangulation was available yet. So navigation was performed by mathematics, a slide rule , and visual spotting. And you dont want to run outta fuel guessing and looking around. I think the price of tickets was also shown at some point. I dont believe this was a military briefing film.
The first bit of the film does say "this is a secret item in the sense of the Reich penal code version of 24 April 1934". Borkum and Sylt were Luftwaffe airfields. It also highlights the Durham coalfields, the steel works on Teesside, the fact that warships are built on the Tyne and how many men work there.
Kris Anderson: The year "1934" refers to the Law that was installed in that year, concerning secret documents and so on. It is NOT the year when this film was made.
