- Are Burton Step Ons already outdated tech for snowboard bindings? After my review of the step-in Nidecker Supermatics, I had a lot of requests for this video. During the snowiest month of the snowiest season EVER RECORDED, we put them through the wringer on an epic powder day at Snowbasin in Utah. Here are my thoughts.

@@BoredProgression I'm confused why e.g. goodride says: So overall, the Nidecker Supermatic is very heavy, doesn’t have much adjustability, and doesn’t have a modern binding feel underfoot. Despite all of that it somehow pulls off a pretty good overall riding experience with great response. What I really love is that you don’t have to deal with proprietary tech so you don’t have to get a new boot to use them.
I mean I know goodride is also just an average joe .. but still angrysb also just said "this is good for those that want a quick entry" but basically no superiority above any binding
I'm sceptical for my everyday riding, although I'm interested a lot (currently running cartel x on all my freerides)
Do you pitch this for general use or only if quick entry is a mandatory feature?
@@MoritzPilz Personally, I wouldn't switch to these over traditional straps, but if you want quick entry, this is it. Just my opinion.
@MoritzPilz good ride is correct. Nideckers step in bindings weigh a ton. park riders would never want that weight.
@choski76 It's true they're probably heavy for park, but you don't see park riders in step ons either, 😂
i ran the step on setup for a full season, hit over 80 days on the mountain. my previous setup was union atlas bindings with comparable burton boots. the biggest difference is the weight. step ons are MASSIVELY lighter than trad bindings. its made spins feel a tiny bit better but not a huge diff. overall, its best feature is just the convenience. I can pop off the lift and get movin within a few seconds, only time thats not true is if im off piste in deep pow and have to strap back in, but that happened once in a whole season. im probably never going back, possibly the supermatics but they just felt like a clunkier step on when i borrowed my buddy's pair
all in all, step ons feel so similar to trad bindings to me that the convenience is enough to keep me in the step on family

@@BoredProgression total, around 130, did a half season 2 years ago, and a full season last year, probably gonna put another 60-100 this year
Rode Burton Step Ons all last season. Convenience is amazing. From time to time, some issues stepping on in deep pow, but you get used to it. Tried traditional strap bindings starting off this season just to see how they felt since it's been a while and I had scored new Burton ION non-step on boots. Loved the boots. Absolutely hated the experience with the straps. Less control, response, and just the bending down to strap in. What a horrid day. Went straight back to the step ons and will NEVER look back at trying traditional strap bindings again. Have a whole new level of appreciation for the Step Ons.

@@Cowicide actually I was wrong. I bought a pair of genesis step ons and they are fucking amazing. No problems at all in deep snow, actually I think it's easiest to click in when you have snow you can easily compact quickly. The issue with these influencers is they get paid by certain companies. So they will sadly put those piece of shit products. I mean look at clew bindings.

I was at snow basin two weeks ago in absolute white out conditions. The snow was great but I had no idea how good the views were, hope to go back on a blue bird day. Great video!

My girlfriend got the latest generation of Burton step-ons at the beginning of last season. She had the same problem if not worse with the heal lift. I had to modify them and ziptie a fairly thick foam in between the binding and boot. It fixed the play. Now she loves them.

For the StepOns, it's more about the boot than the bindings. If you get a very tight and stiff boot that has the "Fake" heelstrap, that thing will rip as hard as any binding I've tried. I have the women's Felix, which is a narrower and tighter fit than men's counterpart and has the heel strap. It feels stiffer feeling than my Ride A-8 with Ride Lassos, which I take out less than the Step Ons because of the convenience when riding solo or with other riders on step-in or rear-entry bindings. In a group with regular bindings, the convenience factor is gone so I just ride the A-8's.
The heel strap absolutely works and is not really "Fake" lol
That’s my biggest problem with step ons though. I don’t want to be confined to “you need to get this boot or that boot”. That’s a big negative for me when every other option lets you wear any boot, any brand.

I had a very different experience. I tried the supermatics and had a lot of difficulty gettin into them. My heel would catch on the back of the binding. My take-away was that they would be better with a smaller boot or a looser toe strap. I ran the step on ion and the photon boot all last season and found the performance excellent. Certianly no "lag" from toe to heel. For me, it's the most responsive set up I've ever used.
Did you loosen the "middle" strap on the Supermatics as loose as it gets? I initially had problems with them until I did that. Apparently the instructions tell you to do that, but I didn't read them.

Switch step in team-n bindings were the best. Unfortunately the comfort of new boots had me switch to Step-ons last season. The comfort level of the boots felt like I was in heaven. But I can say without a doubt the old switch mechanism was the best. So easy to get in and out and the low profile of the bindings made transporting/carrying the board a dream. Still rock them from time to time.

I'm a new snowboarder, and am definitely considering some Step-on bindings for my next setup. The biggest thing I took from watching this is that boot fit and tightness is absolutely critical in how well the bindings work, which makes sense.
Yes but the biggest difference is board feel. The board feel (how much the snowboard feels like a part of your body) is lacking with this system IMO.
@@BoredProgressionthis is false. You can’t be more connected to your board then with step ons. Your heel is literally attached to the board unlike straps. Simply physics lesson proves step ons are more connected
I have the step ons and I love them way more than regular ones. That said I'm just doing relaxing rides and no hard-core tricks (I'm 43 lol).

You should consider revaluating with stiffer boots and bindings. The Photon SO and Step On bindings are both medium flex and are generally better for jibbing. Consider looking into the Burton Ion SO and Step On X bindings which are both stiffer.
They may perform better, but I don’t want to be limited to 1 specific boot that might also break down ride performance as the boot ages. Traditional bindings can perform the same with a boot that has 200 days of use. Plus I like stiffer bindings and a medium flex boot.
@@BoredProgression there is also the Nitro Profile TLS and DC Mora. As for boot breakdown, it doesn't seem any different than traditional boots and bindings. Before I went down the StepOn path, I had the regular Burton Ions. I've ridden both past the 80 day mark and never noticed a difference in performance switching between systems.
I have Ion with Genesis SO. I don’t have the same heel lift “loose trucks” feel you guys are talking about. That said… they should make the “feel” adjustable on these bindings. Assume that will come with next gen models.
Yeah, no matter what, having the sole of your foot not be able to roll towards the nose or tail at all feels odd and restrictive to me. But losening that connection up, makes them less responsive so I feel like there's gotta be a better way to do it. And right now, straps do that, to me.
never contemplated step ins (actually had a pair of switch when i was a kid tho) but after fracturing a couple of ribs this season, it really sucked to strap in for a few weeks. fortunately it only really hurt strapping in my front foot. if i ever do the step ins, it'll probably be the supermatics. btw.... that's a sick drop at the 22 minute mark, just an amazing line.

Still have my Switch boots and bindings Type Ns and hope to ride them again. Best step ons ever made since I can ride whatever angles I want not to mention how easy they are to get in and out of. Don't know why they stopped making them since they were solid, flat, took up little space and appear much more durable than these Burton s not to mention a locked in connection with no play.
Interesting take... most people, including myself would say they are twice as responsive... been riding 15 years, bought step ons this season... will prob never buy another pair of straps... would mention that ANY binding will feel like crap if your boot has heel lift though... seems like a boot issue for ya and boot options are more limited on the system... never tried supermatics, but would mention that I've never been a fan of flos or anything binding like that requires you to losen back strap to get in but have to tighten it to feel good riding.. might as well just use normal straps if I'm going to be playing with em anythings... just my take... much love... happy shredding.
🫶 I gotta disagree though that with a true ankle strap, you torque it down and heel lift goes away. Not the case with this system. There’s nothing to hold your ankle in place, just the outside of the boot in place.
@@BoredProgression I feel like the strap on the boot does something similar, but you seem to crank down a lot harder than I do so perhaps that is why it feels so much different for you and not much for me 🤷♂️ I’m surprised you didn’t comment on lean angles… this is actually where I feel the step ons could improve… my cartels adjust quickly and more aggressively than the step ons for sure… as you said… each to their own

I changed for step ons this season with DC Judge boots. Because I’ve been using dc judges for years with regular strap bindings, it was a perfect situation to compare the + and - of strap vs step on experiences. There wasnt a “new boot” factor in the midst of it. Overall They re great. Inever had the heel lift or other issues from the video. It is not the first time Im hearing issues with burton boots on step ons though, but cant comment on that. I never liked burton boots anyway (straps or not)
Yeah, I think it’s good that there’s more options now besides Burton boots. I just love that you can use ANY traditional boot with supermatics. That’s cool you got to test both versions of the same boot tho. Did you notice any differences that changed your riding?
Burton boots were the major downside of Stepons, they tend to be narrow (‘shrink fit’ makes them small not only on the outside, but inside also in my opinion) and don’t fit most riders. But boots problem resolved over the past years and now Stepons are a great option, because many brands produce compatible boots, there are options to choose from and find your fit.
Hey, curious to find how you got on with that setup? Still liking it? We're looking to do a DC + Burton step on vs Supermatic review in the near future.
I got the Step Ons last season and I experienced the same heel lift of the boot from the binding similar to what's shown at 12:08. Boot was always engaged on the second click on the back. You definitely feel that heel lift before it engages your toe side, and it affects your riding and response. Took a few videos of it happening, took my bindings and boots to the Burton store, and talked to some reps. After showing them the video and in person they did state that that's normal.
One Burton rep suggested to adjust my forward lean, which solves the issue but I like to ride without forward lean. He also suggested to use eva foam and add it to the baseplate. Eventually I brought some eva foam of different thicknesses and cut out to the shape of the baseplate. Overall adding Eva foam really seemed to solve the issue. After trying it out like that it felt so much more responsive and heel lift issue was gone.
In the end I was a bit disappointed that Burton didn't or doesn't address this heel lift issue, as I've seen quite a few video and reddit threads about it. But at least I'm happy I found a solution that works, and have come to really enjoy and love the Step Ons. Still go back and forth between them and strap ons.

Get a Burton stomp pad with built in scraper plate then drag your boot over the Burton stomp pad before getting into Step On bindings. To get out of Burton Step on bindings lift lever and turn heel towards the center of the boot to get out.😊

I use Clew Step ins. Strap in once and then pull a lever and step out and then just step back in. Amazing and I like that they feel like traditional bindings
I hear they function well I just feel like the high back left on the boot looks clunky like a ski boot

Sick! Personally, I think the Supermatics are better than Step On, once you get them dialed in. But I still prefer traditional Union, strap bindings overall. Whatever you pick, you'll get comfortable with them after a few uses!

I'm a little bit concerned you had a bad experience as I literally JUST bought Burton step-ons yesterday. I'm still looking for boots...may try the Nitros... who knows...? That said, THANK YOU for the comment about J-BARs. I've never heard of them before and I struggle with heel lift in every single boot I've tried, regardless of manufacturer. Will definitely purchase some J-BARs!
Yeah, the J bars might help. There’s people who really like the step ons so maybe you’ll like them.
I will say I have run J-bars in every pair of Burton boots since I discovered them due to my narrow heels and heel lift issues. A good boot fitter can custom cut out sticky foam J-bars or donuts to create the same effect on boots that don't come with that option.

Got some weird looks the other day when i was able to strap in with my normal binding faster than their friend who had step ons lol. Got some untracked powder on upper silver fox yesterday! Never seen it not mougled out. Think I dropped through macaroni chute, and then down below into rock chute

I have clew bindings. Probably the best thing about clew 😊 versus going with burtons, would be I can choose to strap in like a normal binding at anytime, virtually eliminating all the problems with power really steep grade
The Supermatics offer the same thing without keeping the highback attached to your foot tho
Another pro of the clew is people know you like men

I switched this season to the ion’s and the step on x. At first they were incredible with no loss in performance compared to my ions (I have a Burton foot) and Burton x base. However without an ankle strap, the boot takes all the force of turning, so they broke in super quick and felt sloppy by day 10-15. I’ve replaced the liners with intuition to stiffen them back up, so hopefully that will solve it as I did love them at first.
I’m weird though, I like a crazy responsive boot/binding with no play/forgiveness. My park days are over, pure freeride for me
Yeah, I wondered if stiffer/new boots would feel better, but inevitably all boots break in. I typically get 100-150 days out of a pair of boots and I don’t want to have to replace boot’s just to get performance out if the binding.
Yeah, was way to quick to have to buy new liners sadly. To be fair though, my friends and wife loved them, but tend not be as hard on things. Part of why I went hardboot for splitboard.
I am too sceptical about these Step Ons. Good old Union. 😎

Similar to the flow binding, you're just not going to get the same top of foot support & pressure from any easy on/easy off binding. With the Burton system, the entire forward support is from the boot & that's putting a significant amount of stress on the boot frame & lacing/boa cable rather than the structure of the binding. Boas will fray & break so always carry a long shoelace for on hill repair & know the specific boa system & cable length to replace things when you're back at the mancave.
Sounds like more trouble than it’s worth. I think the supermatics have that top of foot support.
@@BoredProgression It's not that bad. I've broken 6 cables since 2010, averaging 60 days per season, so the average recreational rider will never break them because the average rider only does 9 days per season according to the ski board stats. Boa provides the repair kit for free!

When you don’t get that 2nd click in deep snow, you can pull on the top of the highback to get locked in
Theres a lot of little tricks with getting in you learn over time but after riding mine for 2 seasons I love them even in some real deep snow
One thing not many people talk about is if you were to get stuck like Dan at 27:46 in a tree well or under deep snow. It would be a lot harder to get yourself out of step ons than bindings to dig yourself out or get pulled out which could be the difference in your life

@@warrensid To get out of deep snow it's easier to just unstrap one foot, maybe even both feet. Step-Ons are harder to get out of when you're not standing on them.

been riding20yrs i like to ride aggressive hard and fast all over the mountain side hits euro carves etc the last 12 seasons ive gone through 4 burton custom x great boards for chargeing with cartel bindings...as im not getting any younger i thought fuck it im going to try something else so gone balls deep and got a capita mega merc with burton step on genesis bindings with the photon boot and fuck me what set up....the reveiw just shown is not accurate....sooo responsive zero heel lift super easy to clip in.. with conventional bindings if your in a pow day you have to get rid of that excess snow as well before getting back in so not sure what the issue is there..super easy to get out..and like i said i ride hard and not once have i felt heel lift in my boots....with the double boa on the photon boot the strap accross the foot almost mimics a conventional binding and these boots were honestly out of the box comfortable this was another one of my concerns as ive been a staunch thirty two fan for ever and still are but had to go with the burton boot...absolutly know regrets with my new set up its epic...you want to watch a good reveiw on the step ons go to tribute lounge and mark faucet who knows a thing or to about shredding hard does a great reveiw on these
I’m glad you like em! Maybe these boots were too worn in, but I’ve heard other people say after 50+ days their burton boots lose response too. And if you had the nideckers you can still rock your favorite 32 boots. Plus you can use them like traditional bindings if you want to. IMO, that makes these outdated.
I'd say that if the boots don't fit then no way that the step-on will cover up that issue. I'd expect traditional bindings can mask poorly fitting boots. (PS I have zero heel lift in Burton Photons or Ions).
The boots fit fine once I tightened the liner some more. They were 10.5 and I’m a 10.5 in burton boots. Always have been. The size was not the issue.

I dunno man the step-ons are sick. you ride with a highback and get a really light responsive highback or take the highback off and pair it with a stiff boot for an insanely surfy freeride without ever having to stop from the lift.
I’ve never ridden without high backs but it sounds wild. Can’t you take highbacks off any binding tho and have that same feeling without needing a special boot?
26:04 If you weigh each binding with a boot in them, you'll see they are the same weight. While the Supermatics do weigh more, the Burton Step-On boots weigh more. The question is, do you want the extra weight on your feet, or your board?
Good question. Only advantage I see to less weight in the binding is less knee strain while on the lift.

So at 11:56 of the video it looks like he never tightened down the the high back screws which probably accounts for the heel lift he was getting. At least thats what it looks like to me l.
The highback had no play in it other than hinging to fold down like it should
I’d make sure the foot pads were set up correctly for the size of your boot. I don’t have the movement you are talking about .
Interesting. I trusted Joey for the setup so Idk if he set them up wrong or not. After a google search I’ve seen some other people had the same issues I had and some people didn’t.
@@BoredProgression My foot pads were set up for the wrong size boot by the folks that sold me the setup. (Not blaming them). It made a huge difference after I adjusted them. Hard to believe such a small change can affect the ride of the board. I have proton boots and super narrow feet and have to crank them down. I've also gotten better at getting my boots tight through trial and error and having them super tight helps a lot. Side note...I'm interested in the Burton Step on with out the super tall heel plates/backs. Should make getting in to the bindings much easier while 'moving'.

Ouch. Sorry to hear that.
With properly fitted boots, Burton step ons have no need for ankle or toe straps. Burton Step on are super responsive with a direct connection to the board at the heel and ball of the foot. His issue in this video was the boots, not the bindings.
One of my biggest issues is the lack of being able to roll my foot from nose to tail. The binding connection point prevents that no matter what step on boot you’re wearing. There’s a reason you don’t see any of Burton’s pro riders using step ons. They are good for accessibility but too limiting in performance.
I'm new and I just bought some step ons without knowing there were other options. Haven't hit the slopes yet. Hope I like them

I have Photon SO and guy and they didn’t have my size…tried half size down and fits like a glove…so Burton step ins need to be sized down!
These fit me fine. I’m always a 10.5 in Burton boots, but the connection from the boot to the binding was my biggest problem. It felt janky.
@@BoredProgression I really can’t tell any difference from regular bindings once clicked in and have 20 days on them (bought brand new photos) , also 0 heel lift and better response then Malavitas I had before….so not sure what is the issue but the setup you tried must not be performaning as it’s meant to.
I disagree with burton needing sized down, but burton has never made a boot wide enough for me ( even with up sizing ) I rock the DC control step ons and love them, I’m getting a new board and planning on putting another set of step ons on it before next season

It really looked like the bindings held you back in all the super hard turns and jumps. You are oneof the only people to say the binding js not responsive. All other reviews say the exact opposite.
Idk. It just felt unforgiving in the times I wanted flex and too soft when I wanted response if that makes sense. It’s a weird connection when used to traditional straps keeping you locked to the board but offering flex under foot. There’s zero flex under foot but soft on top. It’s like the opposite of traditional bindings. And the connection points seemed “loose” to compensate for that stiffness under foot.
This really wasn't a fair test as you used someone else's packed out boots. I have the Burton Photon (second season) and have not had any heel lift and that's 50+ days both seasons. That said, they're are starting to get worn so not sure if they'll make it one more year. Whether you're using regular bindings or a Step on or Step on like tech, heel lift can be a reality and it's due to the boots, not the bindings. When you first clicked in and found you were getting heel lift, I knew an accurate test\comparison wouldn't be possible. I could make the case that with Burton Step Ons and Burton Photon boots, the boots are actually what's extraordinary from a performance perspective. I guess there's no way of effectively testing this setup without getting a brand new pair of Burton Photon or Ion boots (I have heard mixed reviews on the Burton Swath) and they're not cheap. Any Burton reps lurking?
I had heel lift first run but then I tightened the boots/liner and heel lift (inside the boot) wasn’t as much the problem. But I did still have the heel of the boot lifting off the baseplate and my toes lifting when rocking from edge to edge. That’s a mechanical issue. And I don’t want to be restricted to only buying one boot. The photons are butt ugly IMO and even if they weren’t, I usually get 100-150 days of riding on my boots before replacing them with zero performance compromise. Needing one specific boot and having the whole system degrade in ride quality as the boot breaks down isn’t what I call a successful product.
They are my boots far from packed out, really still breaking in. I initially got the rulers and they wore out quick. These boots had maybe 5 days on them before Dan tried them. I do think the jbars would help him reduce heel lift, as I experience heel lift in all Burton boots I buy (step on or not). I like the step ons for teaching, but I feel more confident and comfortable in traditional bindings
@@BoredProgression You have to baby it a bit re: snow in the heel and often need to ollie a bit to get the last click in the heels. Toes lifting/rocking is intentional, as it's supposed to imitate the give in a toe strap unlike the old school stepins, which were rock solid. The boots absolutely suck and they wear much faster than other brands from my experience, but you were also in the softest (read: shittiest) version.
Once you're used to their quirks they're alright. Biggest advantage imo is that they have very few pieces that can break, I've had a single set of bindings last 4 seasons ~150 days. Boots (photons/ions) seem to clap out after 80-100.
i know it's an old video but i can't understand how you guys in the comments can state that any of their Step On boots can be considered as aggressive or mid-range. The highback lean forward settings literally goes only 1/2 - 3/4 of the way comparing to most decent bindings. The highback rotation to left and right is inexistent because those clips have to allign. So you can't dial in anything for the back of your legs in case you want a more narrow stance or in case you want the pressure to go perpendicular on the highback. All their boots have less forward lean than most decent boots. They are almost 90 degrees. Probably in terms of ski they would be 100 degress whereas other brands have 120-130 degress for less money. You literally have to work extra on the heel side to engage the edge since the beginning of the turn. On most other brands as soon as the legs are streight you're locked in on the heel edge already. On those you literally have to lean back before it stops sliding in unweighted turns. Also i've watched people ride steeper things in powder. Clean turns on toes, draggy turns on the heel because it takes a while to engage. I've personally tested them brand new in 2023 on a demo day from Burton. They are super nice for going to the toilet at the apres-ski and skid turns. But they can't carve properly for the life of them. Even in the video you can see the guy being quite decent on the toes and throwing himself on the back for the heel side. It is literally like that.

More hardware is not better, Step Ons are superior in that sense. They are LIGHTER than any other binding on the market, you never need to worry about straps being too tight or too loose. Those two things alone single handedly beat out all other bindings. Being able to strap in without stopping as you getting off the lift is just an added bonus.
I will say they are lighter but the connection on these were too loose to me. They didn’t come off but I never felt snug. I’ve never had a traditional binding be “too tight” as you can simply loosen the ladder for a perfect fit. With these there’s only one “tightness”. If you don’t like it, there’s no flexibility.

not sure why boot heel lift is a negative of the step on system, thats just a boot issue
With a traditional ankle strap, the heel is more locked in. Without that force connecting the top of the ankle to the board, the ankle/heel is free to lift. It's also a negative because you have to use the Burton step on boots or the other few models available from other brands vs any boot that fits your ankle/heel best.
I was always under the impression that the boot prevents heel lift and not the ankle strap and if you're relying on the ankle strap to keep your heel down then its a poorly fitting boot.
But yeah fewer boots means this may be harder to find for everyone@@BoredProgression

Never have an issue with the toe, but he heal strap occasionally will loosen one click and it's always my back foot. Other than that no issues

I don't think your heel anchors were fully locked in. Mine click twice and have zero heel lift. I find them to be more responsive than any traditional binding.
I triple checked a few times and if they weren’t I couldn’t tell and neither could Joey who’s been using them more frequently. Either way, that’s a product flaw IMO.
@@BoredProgression I get what you're saying, but it looked like you were slamming the entire boot into the binding in a single motion. The way to do it is to lower your heel first(toes slightly lifted), listen/feel for the clicks, and then lock in the front.
If I am going to be messing with straps then I am going traditional 100%. If I don't want to deal with straps I am going step-on.

Check out the clew bindings. Best of both worlds.
It's beyond me why people call Nidecker Supermatic an innovation. The system of lowering the back was invented already many years before, but I have personally just seen it used on alpine boards.
I'm guessing you haven't tried the Supermatics. The Clews look extremely kooky with the high back and that base piece clunking around while you walk.
My wife tried the step ons, supermatics and clew and enjoyed the clews the most. Looks we're never a factor for us over practicality. I personally use Step ons and couldn't be happier.
My point was more about the "innovation" part of the supermatics which just isn't there. Clews you can crank down as much as you want for the tightest feeling and will still have no problems getting in. Not something the supermatics can claim.
The supermatics are a new contender, and it's amazing that other brands start to develop new technology. I just can't understand all the (probably paid) UA-camrs who say they are objectively better than the other Step in/on bindings.

Step-ons are so easy a caveman can use them. Have been ridding them for 2 seasons. Absolutely the most convenient, easiest in/out - doesn’t take much to get used to them. Lift the heel and slightly twist the foot in 1 motion. This review seems pretty biased against/for nidecker. My bindings haven’t ever had any heel lift or awkward pinch points in butters or squeaking going in or out 🤷. I ride the ion which is a stiffer boot and charge hard in the alps. I won’t go back to my unions or any of the other 3 step-ins I rode.
No bias. Wasn't paid by Nidecker or Burton. I borrowed both setups from a friend. I just had a better experience with Supermatics. The performance just isn't as good w/ stepon and I shouldn't be limited in my boot selection for the product to function at the level it needs to.
Pretty inconclusive single day ride. Hope no one makes a decision just based on this video.
You only get one chance to make a first impression. And the first impression wasn’t good. And that’s not even mentioning the limitations like having to only buy step on boots.
I mean Nidecker and CLEW are crazy good bindings and you can use any boot. So the answer is yes to have a boot+binding specific solution does not make any sense in 2023.
Haven’t tried the clew but I imagine they can’t be worse than the boot/binding step on combo.
Something is definitely not right with that step on system compared to how they normally perform.

Hi, no offence but complaining about delay from the bindings when the boots do not fit seems a little ... idk? With the right size boot and the BOA on that ankle strap you should be able to crank it down to a point blood flow stops ;). I've got step ons and traditional bindings and my cartes do provide more performance/rigidity than my step on setup but maybe with a stiffer boot that might not be the case. My Photon is good but when its worn down I will try the ION. Imo with step ons the right and fitting boots are even more important than they are on normal bindings.
I’m a 10.5 in Burton boots. Always have been. These were 10.5. They’re the right size lol. So the only excuse for them not performing is that they had roughly 40-50 days of use on them. If that makes them worn out and the system suffers from it, the whole system is inferior to strap bindings or other step-ins. With ANY traditional binding (or supermatics) I can wear boots that are falling apart and the response of the bindings and board will still be better. All these arguments that the boot has to be perfect for step-ons to work right just proves the system is flawed. Day 1 step ons should perform the same day 300 with any boot. Because that’s the standard.
Not a boarder but they had step in bindings in the late 90's with Burton being one of the first. They faded fast since the boot had to be stiffer. So not new.

If you put in your toes first, by angling your foot down (toe-side down) it's the easiest binding to get in.
A bit of snow doesn't matter, you can click in, in almost any circumstance.
For getting out, you release the heel first and twist, so for getting in you should to the OPPOSITE actions, heel in LAST.
Once you use them the correct way, you can get in and out while moving, really easy.
If your boot is lose, your going to have a lose heel, because that's where it pulls, the problem seems to be the boot not fitting properly, weird to blame for the bindings for that.
Appreciate that! But you’re still limited with these in performance/boot selection vs. traditional straps where the nideckers are not.
