Saw them live at a small venue in Pittsburgh last fall. The show was booked preCOVID, before they had won the Grammys, so before they were as well known. They could have passed on playing at Mr. Small’s Theater, but still they played. They are one of the few bands recording today who actually sound better live! The arrangements, with the playful way they interpret their songs, just an INCREDIBLE SHOW!! Loves me some Pumas!!!
Can I Get an AMEN ON ALL LEVELS. I Can't stop smiling. They brought me to a spiritual place. I agree. I am down the Back Puma Rabbit hole and found Valerie June Do your self a big big favor. Dolly Parton meets Janice Joplin meets Tina Turner.
You should also check out Durand Jones & The Indications. Their last year album 'American Love Call' is magic. Found out about them the same time as Black Pumas so they are forever linked in my brain.
I can't say he's similar but Michael has a wonderful voice and you can't go wrong listening to his music. Check out anything from Kiwanuka - which won the UK's Mercury Prize. A humble, talented musician I have been following for several years

The bass line (3:26) is playing what's called an arpeggio.
