This is the definition of a reaction video. Not just watching and pandering to get subscribers and likes. Kudos to you. First, this is a musical satire with lots of Filipino culture references. First scene refers to a Filipino adage "no pain, no gain". Next scene with the Gucci reference, means (my opinion) not everything that glitters is gold. The shower scene (again, my opinion) refers to being genuine and not caring about raised eyebrows (doubters and bashers)... the rest, you more or less got it. That's SB19 music. It makes you think. Check out their other music especially their Wish Bus live performances. Thank you for checking them out.

They could also be talking about their experience as artists in the music industry. They started as trainees in a small Korean company based in the Philippines and had struggled for years when a dance practice video blew up. They are very talented but they felt smothered by the company handling them. Now that they are self-managed and self-produced and getting more successful with the release of their new EP PAGTATAG, they still feel like ants on display being observed by aliens. The aliens however are wearing suits and have clean human hands. Do they represent the big labels?

Hi~ here are some few notes here since the song have a lot of Filipino references:
    1. Pablo cooking scene
    - The ingredients in the pot he's cooking are for the Filipino dish called "nilaga", this is reference to PH proverb, "Pag may tiyaga, may nilaga" which means "hard work has its rewards"
    2. Stell shower scene
    - In PH since the weather is very hot here our body produces this "sour" smell in the armpit (that's why we always use deo) so people who don't take care of their hygiene here are called "maasim" literally "sour" so then he said in the lyrics that no matter how sweaty and sour he smell after all the hardwork he did all day the haters are more "sour" than him/them.
    3. Josh rap part
    - He said that he will not swallow a stone because he's not Darna, Darna is a PH Icon Comics hero, she swallows a "stone" before she transform on her Darna form, so what he's saying is he's no superhero
    - He said that he's his own mechanic and don't need "Moniko", this is reference to a PH tongue twister: "Minikaniko ni Moniko, ang makina ni Monika" which translate to "Moniko fixed Monika's engine" so he's saying that he doesn't need anyone's help to build himself
    4. Justin switch with the dog
    - This is reference to Filipino term "dogshow" used when you are clowning/making fun of something/someone. It can either be you're making fun of another person or you're making fun of yourself. It's "dogshow" because on literal dog shows, the dogs are being displayed to the public to make "tricks" who else does "tricks"?---- Clowns.
    5. SB19 no eyebrows scene
    - If you raised your eyebrows on someone, you're judging them, right? Or being mean to them. On the MV the lyrics says to burn their brows. In PH there is this saying when you are studying hard, "nagsusunog ng kilay" which means burning their brows because their faces are buried on the book. So they're probably saying that instead of raising your eye brows on someone (judge them) why don't u just burn your brows (study) because the haters are basically dumb.
EXTRA: Not a Filipino reference but at the end, the alien scene, they're actually mocking their Alab MV. (watch alab mv again and focus on the last part) This is because during that time they are fully managed by their Korean management SBT which made them do things they don't want to do as the group.
In Alab MV, for example, they are promoted as "PPOP" but the MV literally starts and ended with someone speaking in Korean so PH netizens bashed SB19 about being a KPOP wanna be, no originality, and having no Filipino roots in their music.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR APPRECIATING THEIR MUSIC~

Yes, are right in your interpretation of the song. Gento is a summary of SB19 journey. Their journey is very sad for working hard that everything flop, no financial support, people bashed them as Kpop copy cut, and ugly. Their struggles paid off. New Sub here. I like how you dig in and your analisis is pretty much on track. Pablo, the leader writes SB19'S songs although they all can and do give input. They're lyrics are everything in their songs and describe their struggles. Most every official MV and Lyrics video have English subs. They sing, rap, dance. They go hard with songs like WHAT, Bazinga, MANA, and Crimzone, do Pop like WYAT and Freedom, their ballads like Tilaluha, MaPa, Hanggang Sa Huli, Ilaw and Liham are so deep! They are even better live! They also have solos that are equally as good! Hope to see more since I like your analitical style!

hello filipino a'tin (sb19 fandom name) here! first of all, thank you for giving them a chance. thank you for appreciating not just the song but also their lyricism and symbolisms in the mv, they love doing that, a peek at their creativity and wit. but what i love the most is how quick you caught up w/ their metaphors at first view and first listen.
like for example, that scene where justin (guy w/ the doggo) switched places w the dog and you interpreted it as us, ourselves being like leashed dogs in life somehow. love how you tried to dissect it, most reactors tend to laugh and think it nonsense or random (when nothing for sb19 is ever random, be it in music or mvs) but that is actually a filipino slang called "dogshow" which is to sarcastically mock or make fun of smth. hence, it could be interpreted as no matter how ppl criticized them, (unfortunately, they were once called kpop wannabes and gays when they first started booming in the philippines) they "dogshowed" it by not letting it affect them, instead make fun out of all the hate they got. another scene you analyzed was stell (shower scene guy) freshly going out of the shower and stumbling upon the rest of the boys while the lines "all raised brows on us will be burned until they learned their lesson" played and that is allegorical to the filipino saying "magsunog ng kilay" (literally "burning the brows") which means to study hard and so with that scene, it could mean for the haters that instead of wasting their time baselessly criticizing them, they should use their time studying and sharpening their brains like them (para matuto namang magnilay/until they learned their lesson)
there truly is a lot to unpack from this song and mv like this comment could go on for longer bc it is filled with filipino cultural references, humor and sarcasm that it all may not make sense for foreign listeners so i appreciate you so much for still analyzing it well and seeing within its layers, not just the surface level. looking forward for more sb19!!

WOW O WOW, YOU BREAK THE BARS WELL!! SB19 is known for wordplay in their songs (bars, references - but mostly Filipino references, double meanings, metaphor) either pop or ballad. This is why every time this group releases a new song the A'tin are excited to crack the words and interpretations. I wonder if you can break all their songs like BAZINGA, LA LUNA, WYAT, WHAT?, STRAYDOGS, CRIMINAL

  • @lepunksmoothie
    @lepunksmoothie Рік тому +36

Wow, such an in-depth interpretation of the lyrics despite your limited knowledge of the cultural references! Amazing insights! SB19's Pablo (leader/main rapper) is the main songwriter of their songs - he is fond of word plays, metaphors and poetry and he loves to inject a lot of references to their songs. Their songs are based on their experiences and struggles but they always want the listerners to interpret the message of their songs based on how they speak to them. All the members are actively involved in songwriting, music production (mainly Pablo), choreography (usually Stell - the main vocalist), and conceptualising and creatively directing the MV's (usually Justin, but also Pablo and the other members).

SB19 always gives us Easter eggs to find in their mvs. At the end apparently the aliens looking on are people alien to their music becoming aware of them, also around their shining gold nugget are others not yet quite visible, other ppop artists waiting to be discovered and as sb19 are the pioneers of ppop music they’re leading the way as well as supporting the talent in the Philippines. These are thoughts someone posted as to the meaning and it make sense to me. Also the question at the end is a reference to one of their earlier songs called Alan. Pagtatag is the last ep of a trilogy each having 6 songs making up 18 songs and their fans are called Atin. We love these guys because they’re totally thrilling and ingenious

Thank you so much for your very insightful RV to our dear SB19 ❤ I do commend you for being one of the very few who took their time to understand deeply the various deep nuances/metaphors in the song. Most of the time many got stuck with the dance moves, which is not bad, since it did have amazing choreography and melody, but the meaning of the song itself gets sidetracked.
You are right and on point to what you have deciphered what the song meant. If there were some aspects a bit confusing, it is just the aspect of our Filipino culture/humor. Indeed, Gento is all about them. The last part where there is an ant farm, to me it symbolizes they are now slowly being known beyond their homeland, viewed in a cube or thru varrious platforms by other foreigners (aliens). The dialogue of the aliens there is also a soft reference to one of their earliest songs entitled 'Alab' where the ending line was 'What color is your love'..and this time it is now collectively them..gento/ginto=gold.
I do like your RV, and have subscribed! I am not quick to like reactions, but yours truly felt honest and sincere. Hope you continue on to react to their entire EP, you will like all of it! Just try to blur the MV a bit, so you won't get hit by copyright issues.

Love how detailed and insightful your RV is! Gento is definitely a social commentary as well as a brief summary of SB19's history.
Basically, they had a very rocky start since P-Pop wasn't a thing in the PH back then and they were deemed as copycats of K-Pop. They were also bashed because of their visuals, particularly Stell (the guy taking a shower).
Finances were also hard for them since they were training 10 hours or more a day without receiving any salary. Some days they had to skip meals, other days they had to walk to and from the studio because they had no money for bus fare. One member had to practice with shoes that had holes in the soles because he couldn't buy new ones.
SB19 literally had to crawl to the top and get where they are now. Their story is an inspiration to all A'Tin (SB19 fans).
Hope you can react to their other songs! Their latest EP "Pagtatag" is full of gems. "I Want You" is currently charting in the PH and its MV is a visual overload. "Crimzone" has a sick beat while "Ilaw" has a great message. Older SB19 songs are also a bop. "What?" had groundbreaking production while "Mana" is a fan favorite.
(Also, fun fact: SB19 were formed and managed by a Korean entertainment company called ShowBT. Their contract with ShowBT recently ended, so they started their own management company called 1Z Entertainment. They're now self-managed so they have full control over their music and artistry!)

But yours is the closest based on what Pablo, the leader and writer of SB19 explained when asked about the song. Amazing how you react about Gento by SB19 and admired your review was almost correct. Sb19 is that they were Gold as Gento (like this) . Thank you for the wonderful review , reaction and hopefully you can watch the other #EP_Pagtatag Album like R&B I Want You, Freedom, Liham, Ilaw and Crimzone. MV GENTO is No. 6 now in Billboard Digital Charts.

the realisation this RV made me is the fact that how Foreigners like you sir was able to digest and appreciate the Song, lyrics, the video, overall artistry SB19 showcased meanwhile I am sad at how our fellow filipinos can’t even understand the meaning of the song even if the lyrics are filipino itself(not to generalise tho). Thank you for the genuine reaction sir. salute.

Hope you could listen to their other songs and see more of your SB19 songs' RVs.

They started PPOP to be open on stage and how they struggle hard before the pandemic..how bashers spitted them and smeared them with filthy words but they remained positive and patient. During the pandemic they became our sedative from anxieties that we face as Filipinos working abroad. They are our stress reliever. I am forever grateful. I love SB19 for life

New sub here. Its one of the most interesting review on Gento MV. Most of what you said is correct. SB19 has been and still working their ass of just to get to their dream of World Recognition and bringing with them is our countries life lessons, culture and they proudly waved our flag.
They debut 2018 but started training around 2014. They've been through so much. Calling them names, kpop wannabe, visuals are not pleasing, etc. but still they continue with their dream and beat the odds thats why in the lyrics IT IS RARE TO FIND SOMEONE LIKE THEM. ThEY BLEED SWEAT & TEARS just to get here. ALSO ENCOURAGING EVERYONE TO FIGHT FOR YOUR DREAM IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE. Push yourself to the limits, get out of your comfort zone.
More reaction for SB19 please. I TELL YOU ALL THEIR SONGS ARE LIKE TREASURE HUNTING. So many hidden messages. ❤

Hi~ I saw this posted by another A'TIN. Here are some few notes here since the song have a lot of Filipino references:
    1. Pablo cooking scene - The ingredients in the pot he's cooking are for the Filipino dish called "nilaga", this is reference to PH proverb, "Pag may tiyaga, may nilaga" which means "hard work has its rewards"
    2. Stell shower scene - In PH since the weather is very hot here our body produces this "sour" smell in the armpit (that's why we always use deo) so people who don't take of their hygiene here are called "maasim" literally "sour" so then he said in the lyrics that no matter how sweaty and sour he smell after all the hardwork he did all day the haters are more "sour" than him/them.
    3. Josh rap part - He said that he will not swallow a stone because he's not Darna, Darna is a PH Icon Comics hero, she swallows a "stone" before she transform on her Darna form, so what he's saying is he's no superhero.
    - He said that he's his own mechanic and don't need "Moniko", this is reference to a PH tongue twister: "Minikaniko ni Moniko, ang makina ni Monika" which translate to "Moniko fixed Monika's engine" so he's saying that he doesn't need anyone's help to build himself.
    4. Justin switch with the dog - This is reference to Filipino term "dogshow" used when you are clowning/making fun of something/ someone. It can either be you're making fun of another person or you're making fun of yourself. It's "dogshow" because on literal dog shows, the dogs are being displayed to the public to make "tricks" who else does "tricks"?- Clowns. 5. SB19 no eyebrows scene
    - If you raised your eyebrows on someone, you're judging them, right? Or being mean to them. On the MV lyrics says to burn their brows.
(watch alab my again and focus on the last part) This is because during that time they are fully managed by their Korean management SBT which made them do things they don't want to do as the group.
    CC: Angelique

Wow, really loved your R/V! Thank you for this! I appreciate you going beyond the sound and aesthetics of this MV (which are both praiseworthy), and digging inside your head (ha, ha, 😀 how co-incidental) the song's layers of meaning. I am quite astounded by how right your thoughts and insights are from start to finish, given that you are listening to them for the first time. You're an intelligent reactor, and being such, I hope you keep on reacting to SB19 songs and following SB19 content, because they are intelligent artists and musicians as well.
