  • Yipes IS Marvel vs Capcom.
He’s an EVO champion, and a legend on the mic, the voice of fighting games for a generation of players.
Even after Marvel went away, Yipes kept its flame burning. And in the game’s darkest hour, he did the impossible, and brought a 20 year old dead game back to life.

This video was likely made before it happened, but the BOTS venue was the home of Josemiguel "BlueJ" Henriquez, who just passed away a few days ago after spending at least a week in the hospital for COVID-19 infection.
    May he rest in peace.

This is really special timing. A real east coast cornerstone of the Marvel2 community just passed away due to covid. Yipes held The Battle of the Strongest series at this mans house. Marvel 2 wouldnt have this renaissance without The Uop, Rest in Love Jose "BlueJ" Henrique!

I can't forget when Yipes genuinely shed tears for Mahvel when it ended up getting a spot at EVO 2017. He led a community to donate for a chance to give Marvel 3 a proper send-off and it was an emotional roller coaster ride but he did it for the love of a game that potentially saved his life from the streets. He might as well be a character in Mahvel cause to me, he's a hero.

He came a long way for sure, with humbleness. His history coming up in his local FGC, reminds me of how my connection with my family and friends grew up playing fighting games. Straight grind for hours and FUN! The passion all behind it. Though he may not care, I absolutely think he is the reason for resurrecting MVC, a few times! Especially for EVO2020. The timing and success between BOTS 2 & 3 to EVO announcing MVC2 was way too coincidental. Yipes is a OG legend for sure!! And I’m glad he’s getting the full respect he deserves. Marvel vs Capcom 2 never really went anywhere. It was killed off for Marvel vs Capcom 3, Ultimate, Infinite, and now Street Fighter 5. The problem is that the new games were never able to replace MvC2 and the fan base for it never actually disappeared. This is one of the problems a lot of new games face. They aim to be competitive, but never really have a real base of support. They're artificially propped up with a large prize pool, but then support quickly ends when they realize it's not worth investing in and people move onto the next big hyped up game.

    • @danlorett2184

MvC2 really was amazing due to the west coast/east coast beef, it was reminiscent of the hip-hop beefs. Lots of grudge matches, money matches, shit talking, very grimy.

Disappointing that the writer went for a "some dude's basement" angle instead of crediting who else was involved with the event. I missed this game so much and it’s been amazing to see it back with BOTS2 and the low tier tourneys at D-CAVE this year. Thank you to the OGs for keeping MvC2 alive and rest in peace Josemiguel "BlueJ" Henriquez 💙

I'm 40. I grew up in arcades. The further the FGC gets away from arcades, the worst it gets. There was something about being a scrub in your local arcade and getting respect from grinding. It made you hungry. You didn't get any money. But it was satisfying to beat someone that you couldn't fuck with in the past, and now you're able to hang. The esports just doe not breed that killer instinct.
Without the old school seedy dark arcades. There would be no esports. People have to pay homage. I love Yipes because he doesnt forget his roots.

I wish other e sports communities would learn from his example , big prize pools are a blessing and a curse , It really doesnt matter to me if people arent that good cause they actually have a life rather than practice video games all day , and theyd just get together in there local communities and play some video games in the weekend , we need to go back to that sort of time .

When I first seen Yipes in 09 . I thought wow this guy is way to much for me to handle. Foolish me. It didn't take long for me to realise my error and what a God this man truly is. Every time he commentates is just out of this world with hype and excitement are the heart and soul of fighting games. He is the Absolute definition of Da Man.
Yipes if you read this I want you to know you are the heart and soul of the community and I appreciate everything you do but especially letting me watch capcom cup qualifier last year through your eyes. Hope you all the best and hope to see you back in action soon at tournaments and I'm sorry for your lose latelyxxxx

Wow... I remember going to Chinatown Fair growing up. They had every fighting game imaginable. Some of the best players in the world would be there. And everyone was cool, down to earth. I remember Justin Wong, Yipes etc. They were cool dudes. It was all good competition and good fun. Everyone was accepted. I was a pure noob, but everyone there taught me a lot and I was able to keep up with them eventually. Back then the games were just a quarter. They closed down in 2011, but reopened in 2012 under new management. But the new management got rid of alot of good games, and eliminated the coin option. They implemented some shitty card system where instead of using coins to play the games, you have to buy a card then add money to it. The card itself was pretty expensive alone. And they also raised the costs to play a game. Games used to be 25 cents or 50 cents to play. Now each costs about $2 to play. That sucks ass and a lot of people stopped going thrre because of that. Up until this pandemic they were still open and I still would go occasionally. Mostly everyone who used to go there either moved away or just stopped going. The fun, cool crowds that used to form are pretty much gone. eSports definitely has a lot to do with it. Because of eSports the arcade scene is pretty much dead. Kids these days are really missing out. Nothing beats having fun and meeting new people at the arcades and challenging people in person. For those of us who grew up in the arcade era, arcades feel like a relic of the past that will never come back. Had some great memories man. Miss that scene would make a comeback someday.
