Gorgeous! If you keep making these fancy little gadgets, I guess your electronics area is going to be one of the most unique and good looking ones in existence! I really like your creative approach and the combination of aesthetics and functionality!
PS: I envy you for that CNC-machine and all those modern tools. I feel like an old man, because all I have is like from the 50s :D

Nice project. I think you should break the edges more on the holes where the wire goes up the light arm otherwise the sharp edges may, over time, cut through the cable.

I do that too when i try to speak for an American/English speaking public, probably just because most of the American made videos do that, and i guess the metric system is not that common ower there. When i am at home i onlu use the metric system and Celsius degree, but not in my videos either, so i guess that´s why, but that just my 5 cents...

Now THAT'S the best soldering third hand I've ever seen! It looks high quality, sturdy, stable and robust. The arms don't wiggle like in all the other such projects I've seen until now. Congratulations on the idea and its execution with attention to details. I respect such thoughtfulness and work. No need to watch more, I've decided already: subscribe. :) PS.Have you thought about selling this item as a kit or ready-to-use product for those who need a high quality third hand and don't have time or possibility to make one?

    HI Linn - Nice project
    2 comments:
    1. According to my experience 10W LEDs need bigger heat sinks
    2. LEDs need to be connected to a driver that limits the current and not only the voltage
Since the current changes as the LED gets hot - this may cause 'Thermal runaway' that will shorten the LED lifespan

Came onto your video by chance... loved it. May I be so bold as to make a suggestion? If you put a dab of the hot glue into the holes that the wires go into, at least those that articulate, it will prevent the sharp hole edges from scratching through the wire insulation. btw... I like the look just as you do!! Subscribing...

10W led chips (like the one in video) come in two different configurations, one will work with 12V other with 30V.
For those wanting more info search YT for " Julian's Workshop: Finding Inspiration for the Next Video ", he talks about those at around 3min mark

What a neat design! A solved light problems using cheap ikea aluminium frying pan(as heatsink and cover) and 6x 10W 12V leds, with cheap notebook adapter as power source. I've used tap and die(M3) directly into pan to hold the leds in place. My design looks "how ya do 'in" a little bit. Thanks for your video.
Oh and I probably fell in love again! (to creep it up a little bit)

Very cool little bit of kit. However you can buy 12v 10W LEDs for about $1 from places like BangGood, which would save nearly $20 on the whole project as you won't need the voltage booster either.

I would advise not attaching the alligator clips with epoxy. The clips can easily become damaged and require replacement. Not to mention you could at some point want to attach clips of different sizes or styles. A screw would be a better option I think. Otherwise, I love the concept.

Hey Linn! I like what you are doing here on youtube, thanks for the inspiration and instructions for things! And maybe a little tip for you. I saw you were drilling the aluminum dry, and aluminum is kinda sticky. Most of the times it helps to put some spirit (you know, the blue stinky burning liquid) on your drill and workpiece. A little WD-40 helps also. Keep it up!

Looks perfect, just LEDs could have been smaller without heatsink for better access to some parts and get better viewing angle and those aligator clips cant rotate they are epoxied inside and on the other end the screw is going through shaft, but good project anyway! Thumbs up

Aside from the fancy scribing on the aluminum plate, there's nothing being done here that couldn't be done with basic woodworking tools. The most complicated part of this seems to be center-drilling the aluminum tube. I do wonder, however, about whether most people want 10 watts of LED brightness shining right at their eyes when they're soldering or doing some other detail work.

That's cool Linn! That light looks incredibly bright. Perfect for intricate work. The only thing I'd have to say that I scratched my head over was how you screwed on the mesh on the bottom... I think screwing the corners down, instead of the sides, would prevent the corners from getting catches and bending out of shape as you move it. Other than that, I love it! Nice touch making it a "signature piece" too!
