Around 1994 I got to drive one of these LM versions for a weekend at Watkins Glen International. The owner had hired me to instruct him on how to shift the non-synchromesh racing transmission. The car was geared so high that, since it was just a track day, I thought I was going to get busted for going too fast in the pit lane. I think at idle with the clutch fully engaged I was doing about 40 miles an hour. Since it was a full-fledged race car it had no speedometer so that is just an estimate. The car ran terribly at low RPM and you can tell in this video when the driver is in the slow twisty bits that the initial acceleration is anything but smooth. The transmission was very difficult to shift even with good heel toe double clutch downshifting technique as the dogs on the gears felt like they were half the size of the dogs on a Hewland race gearbox. Again the gearing was so high I remember doing the uphill esses in second gear which you would normally do in third in just about any street car. On the long back straight I couldn’t run out of RPMs in third gear which was about 160. I’d driven 4 other more or less stock F40’s as the regional Ferrari Club Chief Instructor and the race version was massively different. Huge brakes that required getting up to temp. More down force. Race slicks and 700 HP. Fastest car I ever got to drive. Very grateful to whoever posted this video so I got to have my memory of how brutal this car was confirmed as correct. Totally impossible to drive on the street but a blast on a track.
cb rice, the 160 I mentioned was my guess of how fast I was going in 3rd gear when I had to brake for the “bus stop” chicane at the end of the long back straight at Watkins Glen.
@@ColonelJohnmatrix1000 i agree that not every Ferrari car is a race car but many of them definetly are built for racing. Second, that's a road car driven at a solid 7/10ths - groundbreaking for such an expensive vehicle! This is so old, so raw, and it makes so clear that the LM goes as fast as you dare push it. Have fun selling a car with no original parts due to the necessity of constant mantainence. It's the only reason why so many collectors use them with caution. And since it's a race car it's built with the intent to go fast, not to last, so you are left with many original parts not attached to the car.
