MIL is manipulative. She may have learned this trick before of taking someone into a confidence and then using that person as a scapegoat when the truth comes out.
If you don’t tell then you were keeping the truth from someone. If you do tell then you are tearing the family apart. Meanwhile the person who actually did the wrong says they were just trying to not hurt anyone.
You are labeled the bad guy. It’s good that your husband is standing by you. MIL is despicable.
