I first heard this song live in a crowd of 20,000 plus people but for those few minutes I was all alone with this soulful heartbreaker with tears streaming down my face, unashamed. I don’t think I will ever recover from that. I don’t want to, either. Music is magic.

I will wait by the river
In the light of the moon
At the edge of the city
    I will wait for you
    No I can’t wait forever
Someday I’ll be dead and gone
    And I won’t be forgiven
    For what I’ve done
I will wait by the river
I will wait by the river
I will wait by the river
I will wait by the river
I will cry out to heaven
As it it rains down on me
    I will beg for forgiveness
    Get down on my knees
If I can’t change the weather
Maybe I can change your mind
    If we can’t be together
    What’s the point of life
Baby, I didn’t mean the things I said
I don’t honestly wish you were dead
    I’m a fool, I’m just a man
If i only could hold you again
As the stars fill the river
As it flows into the sky
And the mind leaves the body
    And floats higher and higher
    If we can’t be together
I will leave this world behind
If I can’t touch your body
    Can I touch the sky
I will wait by the river
I will wait by the river
I will wait by the river
I will wait by the river

This song gets my imagination going. Two humans from different planets in the future. The man is waiting for the woman to meet him on the river on some other beautiful world, as they are madly in love and had planned it for so long. The man had to give up and risk everything to meet her there and in the process, hurts her badly. He cannot be forgiven, but the man waits and waits for her but she never shows. The man realizes this, and in his sadness, he knows that he would rather die than be without her. He drowns himself in the river, and it carries him up into the heavens.

These past two song have changed my life for the better. It made me revisit strange trails and made me understand just how masterfully crafted Lord Huron is. I don't dig top 40s because it is all the same music, repetitive and tarnished over time. It's been 6 yrs since strange trails and it isn't tarnished one bit. Lord Huron is the greatest gem I've ever found and will forever keep. It is a shame the general public has not found you yet. But they will. Music is a dying art but this just continues to revitalize it. Lord Huron if you read this, know that you are unique. You are something truly special. Music will not be the same for me when 4/20 hits. I will forever hold your albums close to me. This new one however, now that will be held the most close. Music won't be the same for me for one good reason,...... I love you too much. This album will become part of my daily routine. I will wake up and all asleep to it. I love your voice Ben. Never stop. I will never stop listening. We all will never stop supporting you.

I think every generation has good music, of course nowadays there is "less" quality music. Having said that, remember that is subjective- nothing more then opinion. I would say the 2 best "eras" of music was obviously the mid to late 60s into the early to mid 70s (basically 1965 to 1975) ....all the greats were kicking off, music was revolutionary, new genres were being created, guitars were being smashed for the first time, we had the acid rock, the jam bands, the improv/progressive rock..it was all being created new & uncharted territories. From the beatles to...led zeppelin, and pink floyd and black sabbath to the doors and the grateful dead to santana and jethro tull to the guess who and CCR, to eric clapton and the yardbirds, as well as CREAM. The rolling stones, to the who, smashing guitars to jimi hendrix setting his guitar on fire, even Aretha Franklin (despite being motown and the 50s) she was still a force to be reckon w/ in the 60s. Even country back then was "real" - the real outlaws of country, and the 70s with the big arena rock bands getting their start (Rush, Bad Company, Van Halen) even the late 70s wasn't bad into the early 80s...metal and protopunk, and of course all the goth/electronic/fusion stuff going on (The Cure, Talking Heads, Flock of Seagulls, U2, Depeche Mode, The Clash, King Crimson, Devo, among many others). And then we had the mid 80s...hair metal and pop-metal was getting big (all that pyrotechnics and masters-of-the-universe type shit...wasn't my preferred style / genre - but music trends come and go...the music itself is what matters, and what a person likes (like moods) can change. BUT some bands never cease to exist, certain albums are timeless. When you hear Eric clapton and The beatles do a 1968 rendition of "As my Guitar gently weeps" nothing compares. Or when Pink Floyd does "Pigs" or "Dogs" from Animals (1977) ....classic/creative/introspective/all those "feely feels" that good music gives.
Of course the 2nd great wave of rock came in the late 80s/turn of the decade into the 90s...even if GRUNGE was a fad/trend...theres no doubt the 90s revitalized good classic "home-down-roots" rock n roll. Pearl Jam, the power-trio that was Nirvana (cant deny the power of that band) even if its "trendy" to have a Nirvana shirt, I remember in 1991 (being 12-13 years old) WHEN they were new, when the band was just exploding onto the US and European market...when nevermind came out...you KNEW there was going to be a major shift in music...it was powerful, it was pop, it was slightly punk, the lyrics were ingenius, the music was straight ahead, the music moved you (and 25 years later) it remains timeless...something about Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, all the Seattle bands, and those "clumped" with them as well (Sonic Youth, Mudhoney, Butthole Surfers, Weezer, among many others). Then you had mid 90s...all the grunge knockoffs, the Soul Asylums, and Collective Souls, the Bush's and Days of the News, and Silverchairs..>STILL not bad music...but a bit derivative at the time...then we had the industrial revolution (at the same time Green Day & Offspring were breaking big in 94, 95, and 96 - IE my high school years) Marilyn Manson and NINE INCH NAILs (basically Trent Reznor & company) were creating something new, dreary, despair, yet powerful, and SOLID (cant deny The Downward Spiral, or BROKEN) POWERFUL albums...albums that could just as well been made in the 70s or 80s, or 2000s. Again timeless music. Even HIP HOP in the 90s was powerful...STORY tellers, not all rap / hip hop is recycled garbage, some of it (Mos Def, Talib Kweli, early Wu Tang, Gza-liquid swords, Jeru the Damaja, Nas, Rakim, ) was powerful, TOLD a story...had real emotional beats...that got you thinking, that got you uplifted & motivated...that is what GOOD music does, gives you those electrical beams down your spine. It moves, it motivates, doesn't matter if the practitioner is a black guy with baggy pants, and a "mic" or a industrial goth rocker with black makeup and nylon stockings, or some grunge tooting, pot smoking, hippie long-haired rocker with a vintage guitar. The late 90s saw "nu metal" (the rage against the machine stuff from the early 90s was returning) Metallica was changing (no longer the band they were in the mid 80s...with classics like Master of Puppets, or ...and justice for all) now we had "LOAD" and "Reload" ...still you cant deny it...but nu metal the rap/rock hybrids of STAIND, and Linkin Park, (and Linkin Park was great) then you had that vintage rock revival sound (The White Stripes, The Black Keys, The Arctic Monkeys, The Arcs, Dead Weather) and the STONER rock (dreary desert metal) "california stoner desert metal" bands like The Machine, Kyuss & of course Kyuss 2.0 version Queens of the Stone age. Then you had progressive rock like Mars Volta..psychedelic, long-jams, mind-bending music. Then you had "lo fi" a style of barely electrified introspective lyrics...like Modest Mouse, Death Cab for Cutie, and Arena "anthemic" rock like Coldplay and Muse. Of course no band has had the impact that RADIOHEAD has had (Jonny Greenwood can play like 72 instruments) and 2nd guitarist O'Brian is equally ingenius, and Thom Yorke on vocals and pianos...I mean that 5-piece band, has been together 34 years, and produced 9 studio albums over the last 30 years. They are one of the most innovative, thought-provoking, HAUNTING, electronic, yet rock, yet fusion, you cant really IDENTIFY what Radiohead is...its progressive ? its rock ? its electronic/fusion ? its all of it, its orchestral/arrangements...somewhere between early Daft Punk, and 70s Pink Floyd...."sonic exploration" is the best way I can explain it...
THAT is good music, music that doesn't just have you beating your head, but also it reverberates long after the song ends...you are thinking about it days/weeks/months (if not longer)....that is good music. Music isn't a dying art, it goes through changes, 80 shades of 1 color...it doesn't "die" pop, country, rock, hip hop, metal, classical, vintage, speed - it goes through cycles, sometimes good, sometimes bad, sure its an industry, and its about MONEY, but it can also be about art, and creativity, of course today there is more recycled, mainstream pop "trash" (but lets face it, there has always been TOP 40, or BILLBOARD HOT 100) there has always been pop, there has always been mainstream....there was crap 50 years ago, there is crap today, the big difference is, today there is ALOT MORE crap. But...that doesn't mean good music doesn't exist...this band right here Lord Huron, and Cage the Elephant, and Awol Nation, and Arcade Fire, and Silversun Pickups, and Autolux, and Klaxons, and Radiohead, and (the list goes on) are STILL crafting great songs, great singles, great albums, great concept albums, great live performances, great live/studio performances...infact some of my favorite albums are from the 1999-2007 era. Despite all the classic stuff, theres good music in EACH generation. YOU just gotta know where to look, The Shins / The Vines ? The Strokes ? The Raconteurs ? The Arcs ? 10 Ft Ganja Plant ? Johns Browns Body ? Plastic Nebraska ? I worked at a record shop nearly 8 years...and I've seen DOZENS of bands from Aerosmith to R.E.M (the best of college rock radio, IMO Radiohead and R.E.M are the 2 most innovative, boundary-pushing bands of the last 35-40 years) infact I'd go as far as to say R.E.M (with that college rock and jangle pop) and Radiohead w/ their constantly exploring new sonic territories...are the 2 most "important" bands in modern music (even though REM called it quits in 2012 the 90s & 2000s were an era of so many diff trends, and styles...I mean we even saw grunge slightly return with bands like Seether, and Three Days Grace, and Chevelle. ...so it all comes down to where you look. OR what you are looking FOR, what styles you enjoy, what genres, and what bands/musical acts, from Motown and Elvis, and early rockabilly of the 1940s and 1950s....and blues and psychedelic rock of the 60s...to arena rock, and progressive rock and arena rock of the 70s, to metal, speed, thrash, and hair metal/pop of the 80s, to the grunge of the 90s, and vintage rock revival and protopunk/fusion of the 2000s. to lo-fi and industrial of the mid 90s to the electronic/punk/pop of the early 80s, to the 2010s and pop/country. So...there are so many styles, so many genres, again not to sound redundant but you just gotta know where to look. Not everything is Katy Perry, or Lady Gaga, or Lil Wayne, or Cardi "B" and hot recycled trash. Sure that stuff exists for the mindless masses...but there is always something more...like Lord Huron....there is always something to behold, to treasure. It is true what Dick Clark said many ...many years ago...music is the soundtrack to your life.

Absolutely LOVE this, heard it this morning... It has that beautiful "throw back" sound that my Daddy liked... We play a game, I share something new with that throw back sound... He shares something old, with that sound...
I lost my Daddy, a few weeks ago..I heard this.. And wept. Partly because it's so beautiful, partly because... The game we played is over. I did share it in his memory.. Beautiful, beautiful song!

The shear and utter hopelessness when I hear this song, it kills me every time I listen to it. I keep coming back to it, even though I know what it does to me. If you're out there somewhere, feeling like I do, I hope you're hanging on, even if it's by a thread. Peace.

This reminds me a lot of something I just went through. I wanted to meet up with a few friends who were going to hang out. One of these friends was someone I was planning to ask on a date. I messaged and asked them to tell me when they got to the place. I waited in the parking lot for an hour without ever receiving a reply before finally getting out to check to see if anyone had come. When I got out, I saw them having a double date. I'll never forget how invisible I felt. It was raining and I was just staring through the glass window from across the street, all alone. They had completely forgotten about me.

Cosmic Drifter hello my friend the Cosmic Drifter. I hope you are well! I would join the fan club but I do not have a Facebook account. I did once upon a time but my profession (CPS Director) did not lend well to Social Media. Death threats were a near constant reality. Now with terminal disease, reactivating my Facebook account would be difficult. I have great difficulty typing and seeing. Is there another medium/means for the Fan Club? It would be wonderful to be a part of it. There is not ONE thing that I do not adore from LH and the LH family. Do let me know! Only love and light... see you in the stars above!

Lord Huron, this is somewhat eerie. You know, it's hard to write and explain what your music means to me. I found you and also made a good friend I became very close to in 2015. He passed away in November of that year. I was working at a camp where the only place I would get cell reception to talk to him was sitting on a certain part of the dock by the lake. We both grew up and loved going to the lake so we'd reminisce about it all the time. I listen to my Pandora nearly everyday, and on the days I was (or am) missing him badly, one of your songs would come on. I don't remember how the association started initially, but shortly after it stuck. On anniversary days. At the same exact moment I saw the same lyrics scrolling through Pinterest. In the Wind and She Lit a Fire specifically. Sometimes I'd just instantly start balling, but then also smile because it felt like him reaching out to me. Rivers and Roads by the Head & the Heart was another song that would play. Many of the songs talking about meeting again one day by a lake/river. So that became the image in my mind. I don't know what happens after we die. But maybe I'll find him there somehow someday. I miss him so much. It's still hard, Kyle.
    Thank you, Lord Huron

      @mariah12809 6 років тому +4

He also told me once he had a dream where I was teaching him ballroom dancing on a dock with 60s era rock music playing in the background. Haha. That still makes me smile!
