Let me know if you guys would switch up the itinerary from the places I've suggested!

Having visited the Somme a number of times a day is not enough. I spent a full morning at the Sheffield. So interesting. I use a campervan to get around and at the commemorations three weeks ago stayed overnight into the 1st in a small layby in Mash Valley. Went to the services at Sunken Lane, Thiepval, Ulster Tower and then Beaumont Hamel. Finally to my Great Uncles' resting place at Authuille. A great day! I would urge anybody to visit the Somme. As for meals take a packed lunch and sit with our lads.

Great video I’ve been about 20 times, I never get tired of the place. Very somber to say the least. Lest we forget.

An outstanding video. I’m always in the Somme on July the 1st and try to make at least one other trip during the year. For planning remember the hour time difference between France and the UK.
Gommecourt is hugely recommended, but you are spot on with all your suggested locations.
If you need fuel, the Intermarche Supermarket in Albert has some of the cheapest fuel in the area - you pay at the pump by card, but be aware that your bank account will be deducted 100€ automatically and the balance of the cost of fuel will be recredited to your bank up to 3 days later…
Thanks for yet another excellent presentation. Really great delivery and detail.

Thank you - yes I definitely want to get some videos filmed at Gommecourt soon

What an excellent video, very well presented and a nice touch reminding people that a lot of these places are on someone’s land. You do seem to get excellent camera angles showing the gradients The Tommies had to cross just to reach the German trenches, especially as they were laden with unnecessary gear.

You missed going to the Ulster Tower. Tea coffee sandwiches and snacks available. You can visit the trench system in Thiepval Wood and walk No-Man’s land up to Mill Road Cemetery. Better to go here on way to Thiepval Memorial rather than lose time going to Albert. Carrying a pack lunch works well for my groups. Good luck.

I've been to the Somme twice now and haven't been able to get access to Ulster tower or the trenches nearby yet. It's a bit difficult if you're not there on the right days.

This is very helpful indeed and just what is needed. For my part, ironically , it is Gommecourt and the Sherwood Foresters (other regiments too obviously). This might have been a diversionary attack but three waves of attacks were decimated, many in support trenches. It really was an instance where a well known General should have stopped the massacre that served no purpose after the initial diversionary attack.

@@historyinyourhand1787 The RFC did support the ground forces on the 1 July 1916 but nobody mentions the work they did try and find a RFC airfield and take a flight over the somme it has to be worth it and i am sure it could be done by a historian

@@historyinyourhand1787 Very much. One thing I often wondered and looking at your photo of the sunken lane there appears to be a straight lighter line from the left into it close to the top. I wonder if this was the dug trench to get troops into the sunken lane . Im Probably wrong and seeings things but just spotted it.

Hey, Rob! You have a great office :).
I'm glad to hear that the Somme isn't far away from Calais and accessible via the Eurotunnel, ferry, or train.
Is the farmer you mentioned the same one that you talked about in a previous video? It's understandable that he wouldn't be pleased with people driving there on the farmland.
It's sad how the men didn't get too far. But, I definitely want to visit Sheffield Memorial Park.
I think I mentioned this in your last video, but it's sad how Horace Iles died so young. I need to check out the full length video about him.
I like the maps you shared. They're helpful.
I need to check the video clips of the troops in the Sunken Lane (especially while visiting). I also need to see your Sunken Lanes video too. You have a lot of great content and information.
I would definitely take up the guide on the tour of the Newfoundland Memorial Park. I think it would be an excellent opportunity to learn :).
I will check out your video about the area also. Hopefully in the near future. Your video about Horace Iles is the next one I plan to watch.
Haha glad to hear about the toilet stop and recommendations. Probably would be drinking a lot of water too, especially if it's a warm day. So, I concur with your recommendation lol.
Lunch is important, so I think I'd check out the restaurants.
    72,000 missing...Wow.
Just hearing about how many were there and seeing the brief clips of the names made my heart sink.
It's cool how you have many videos about the Somme. There's much to learn and I appreciate how you have video videos about the battle and memorials.
I would like to visit the Devonshire Cemetery also. I agree, the panel is powerful. It moved me and hit my heart.
Man. I wish Captain Martin's commanders heeded his concerns.
I would like to read Lt. Hogdson's poem too. Interesting how he and Capt. Martin had premonitions of deaths in different ways. Your video about them is another one that I would like to watch.
I just ordered, "To Fight Alongside Friends". Thanks for the recommendation.
I'm excited for your next video! Looking forward to more videos about the battle as well.
Thank you very much for sharing your recommendations! :) Have a nice day, buddy!
