  • A full review of Just Flight's new Piper Warrior II add-on for Microsoft Flight Simulator, with real world operating data!
    So, having blundered around with the pre-release copy for a bit, I finally got down to properly testing the full release version of this aircraft... and then my recording died half way through the flight and a 40GB patch hit. Hopefully at least some of you are still interested in what I've got to say!

    Very nice video. The Piper Cherokee Warrior (N303GS) was the airplane that I got my PPL in several years ago, and it's so great that Just Flight seems to have nailed the authenticity of that wonderful little trainer. The sounds in the cockpit are spot-on and the only thing that I found lacking was the smell of the leather seats and the aroma of the worn carpet. It was great riding along with you. Thank you so much!

    Great video, thanks! I'm 10 hours into my training in the Warrior and this add-on came along at just the right time, it's brilliant. I'm not so worried about the textures, as I want to practice the lessons I've gone through in the real aircraft.
    PS Thanks for the Avionics switch, I couldn't find it either! :D

    It’s really the perfect plane to learn the first rules of flight ! I have discover fs2020 in November 2020 and this plane offer me the first real impression that I’m not in a sim 😅 I know I’m always in fs2020 but it’s not a game when you flight with pa28, you feel the weight of plane in your hand ! I really enjoyed the flight, thank you so much for a great informative video! It would be great if you could do a cross country flight in the Warrior in IFR conditions using basic VOR and ADF navigation - no GPS! for those of us still learning. With you being a flying instructor I think that would be really exciting "old school" flying before the days of High Tech GPS navigation. We flight simmers always want more - never satisfied - LOL. thanks again.

    Brilliant. Highly informative. As a little kid, Dad warned me about the old Cherokees and how low hour pilots could get into some trouble. This follow on aircraft is obviously a leap ahead from that. Very nice and if I ever take up virtual flying, I should use this Just Flight PA-28 Warrior to learn good (virtual) airmanship. Keep up the great work.
    Future virtual sims? If they can simulate that awful smell of cooking avionics and interior when you first get into the aircraft on a hot day. As Bugs Bunny used to say, "easy stomach", don't turn over now."

    Very nice video! I've been in contact with a local flight school and likely to start lessons next week (EGTR). And like so many others, this is what they are mostly teaching their students with. Glad to hear that it's very close to the actual plane. The only thing I'm worried about is if I fit comfortably to the plane, as I'm 6'2" and quite bulky :)

      You'll be pleasantly surprised when you climb into the Cherokee Warrior. I'm 6'4 and I fit into the cockpit quite nicely, despite my 35" legs. 😀 It's a bit of an effort climbing over the right seat but once you settle in and move back the left seat It's very comfortable.

      @@nathanwildthorn6919 Well, my first flight was yesterday (earlier got cancelled due to weather) and I was mostly fine :) only "problem" was during the initial control check was the yoke hitting my thighs rather annoyingly, if not distruptively :) The experience was incredible. Now quite what I anticipated, but definitely got the bug. Next flight is next Saturday, UK weather prohibiting :)

      @@pitbullvicious2505 I do agree with the yoke/thigh issue; at that time I weighed around 290 lbs and at first flying with my knees splayed outwards and still keeping my size 15 feet on the rudder pedals was cumbersome, I managed to adapt very quickly. Enjoy!

    Great review and lovely approaches. I have one question about the rudder, when I deflect my peddles, the aircraft turns way more rapidly, than what I saw yours in the video. So quick question, what do you have your sensitivity set to?

    • @FlyFromHome
      @FlyFromHome  2 роки тому +3

      Thanks! I have -40% set for the sensitivity of my pedals for light aircraft flying, with 60% reactivity. Seems to generate an appropriately 'heavy' feel.

  • @steveandjensulewski2011
    @steveandjensulewski2011 2 роки тому

    Thanks for the preview. I used to fly Warriors out of PDK. One recommendation is to not deploy flaps while banked in a turn. Wait until you level the wings first. Stall speed is higher in a turn and lift is not opposite gravity. You risk ballooning, increasing your AOA in the turn and stalling low and slow.

    • @FlyFromHome
      @FlyFromHome  2 роки тому

      Yeah that is something we’re usually cautious about in real life, also because of the risk of asymmetric flap extension. You fly Pa28s long enough though your yoke hand automatically pushes forward to compensate when you deploy flap 😂

    Some people on both Just Flight's and FlightSim's forums report having a severe pitch jerking issue with this plane. A couple of threads on the subject. Your review - very informative by the way thank you - seems to predate this pitching problem which seems to have appeared with SU9. • @jrkob1156
      @jrkob1156 Рік тому

      Thanks, yes if you could have another look that would be great. You mention at the beginning of your review that you are familiar with the Warrior, do you feel that JF's sim is about right as far as engine power is concerned ? Reason why I'm asking is because I am not familiar with the Warrior, however I am very familiar with the Archer (which I've been flying at the local airclub for a few decades now), so I increased the engine's power from 160 to 180hp in the engines.cfg file to mimic ther engine power of the Archer but it seems to be overpowered I think. If I bring it back to 160hp, I have about the amount of power I get in the real Archer. I may even need to lower to 150hp.
      Coming back to the pitch jerking issue. Ideally I was looking for an Archer but I couldn't find a good one around for MSFS. So I acquired this Warrior yesterday and I see where people are coming from. It's as if the turbulence effects that have been added with SU9 are amplified in this particular aircraft. The jerking exists in the real one (well... the Archer in my case at least), it's just the magnitude of it that's a problem.

    On approach I keep getting myself in situation where I cannot stabilize this aircraft horizontally. I keep moving left to right and left again.
    Also I've noticed that on turns about 30deg bank angle with rudder input for coordinated flight when I go back from turn to level flight the ball of turn coordinator started to move in opposite direction even if I used other rudder pedal input.
    Can you help me? What am I doing wrong?

    • @FlyFromHome
      @FlyFromHome  2 роки тому

      The method I usually teach is to keep the wings as level as possible and use the rudder to maintain the centreline on final approach. Tends to help if you’re struggling with over correcting on final.
      I’m not quite sure what you mean with the balance ball, but it won’t give particularly reliable indications when changing attitude, so I wouldn’t worry too much about that. Use opposite rudder to help level the wings if you’re using a steep angle of bank (45 degrees or more) otherwise just relax rudder pressure as you return to wings level 👍🏻

      The real aircraft isn’t cleared for spinning, but from what I’ve heard from incidents where the aircraft has spun accidentally that sounds about right. You have to mishandle the aircraft severely to make it spin, but once it’s set in it can be very tricky to recover.

    You certainly have to be friends with your copilot to go flying around in this tiny thing. You're both practically elbow to elbow.

    In a long flight what is the usual flight altitude?

    • @FlyFromHome
      @FlyFromHome  2 роки тому

      Depends on a lot of things! Usually for a small aircraft like this one with a normally aspirated (non-turbocharged) engine, you aim to be between 4 and 6 thousand feet, since that’s where the engine is most efficient. But all sorts of things like terrain, airspace obstacles and the like can dictate what altitude you fly at 😁

    • @D800Lover
      @D800Lover 2 роки тому

      @@FlyFromHome - Thanks, I was referring to flat terrain under reasonable conditions. The engine efficiency is the key to the answer. Thanks again.

    You never leaned the mixture after engine start, you will foul the spark plugs this way. Your use of carburetor heat after lining up on the runway was completely unnecessary, POH states you only use that if you suspect ice. PA28 are not prone to carburetor ice like Cessna's, plus you were going to go into a take of at full power anyways.

    • @FlyFromHome
      @FlyFromHome  2 роки тому

      I’ve never encountered any information stating that leaning is required in a warrior while taxiing, although I’m happy to be proved wrong if you have a link. Most of the techniques we use are designed to teach students good practice for basic SEPs in general, not just Warriors - that said a friend of mine had a crash due to a loss of power just after takeoff in a Grumman Cheetah - which the investigators attributed to a lump of ice lodging itself into the carb after power was applied. I believe the AA-5A has the same engine as the Warrior 🤷🏻‍♂️

    • @marsstarlink3235
      @marsstarlink3235 2 роки тому

      @@FlyFromHome the reason you lean aggressively after engine start, taxi, is so the spark plugs don't get fowled with lead residue. This happens because the fuel mixture is too rich and isn't being burned off at low power. When you go do the runup the engine one day will run rough because of this. If you aggressively lean and attempt to take off without enriching then the engine will sputter and cough, you'll remember to enrichen the mixture. Also on high altitude airports you want to learn for best power done in the runup. About carburetor ice, that other airplane you mentioned is different, and should be operated differently regardless of engine similarities. The PA28 warrior 2 is a 160hp airplane. The carburetor is in a unique location where it's warmer than on Cessna's that are notorios for ice. You should test the carburetor lever on each flight, but in that situation you were in the sim it's not actually clearing any ice, Ive flown in full IFR with these bird in just above freezing temps and never touched that carb ice lever, I do have my hand ready if I suspect ice building in the carburetor. Happens very rarely. 2cents

    • @FlyFromHome
      @FlyFromHome  2 роки тому

      Yep I do realise why you lean for taxi, I’ve just never seen any manufacturer’s docs recommending it for the Warrior. It’s generally more of a practice for aircraft with larger, high power engines. I used to fly a Comanche 250, in which it was vital to lean out. It also used to ice up on the ground quite aggressively too!
      Regarding the carb ice, I appreciate that the Warrior is less susceptible to icing than Cessnas are, but our flying school uses a variety of different types and the techniques we teach are designed to promote good airmanship in general. You really don’t lose anything by running a short blast of carb heat before take-off following a long taxi - better to be safe than sorry in my book 😊

    • @marsstarlink3235
      @marsstarlink3235 2 роки тому

      @@FlyFromHome The Manufacturer's docs on the old birds are almost like a Brochure, does not encompass everything specially the performance graphs which are bare bones. I have no experience on a 250 Comanche but I do on a twin Comanche which is fuel injected, not the same deal. Another point I want to bring up on why you shouldn't taxi with carb heat on is that you're now bringing unfiltered air (bypassing the air filter) now that air is close to the ground, dust, rocks, bugs can get into the engine when the PA28 was perfectly happy a second ago. If you suspect carb ice, use the lever and don't hesitate as but with the PA28 you really have to try to get carb ice in the air, on the ground its unheard of.

    • @FlyFromHome
      @FlyFromHome  2 роки тому +1

      Carb heat usage on the ground is part of the power check procedures as per the checklist - if it was so harmful to the engine I’m sure they wouldn’t prescribe doing it when you’re sat at 2,000rpm and stationary. I’ve definitely experienced carb icing on the ground before in some aircraft and as mentioned - we’re not just teaching students to fly warriors. Last thing I’d want to do is teach a freshly minted PPL that carb icing doesn’t happen. Let’s just agree to disagree before we turn the comments into PPRUNE 😉
